Need some advice on a "new" model GE washer. The tub spins during agitation causing water to spill out the overflow tube, and of course, the tub coasts to a stop at the end of spin cycle. I'm not sure how the brake mechanism on these machines works. Any help appreciated.

If "new" means pre 1995,the brake is inside the transmision. Usually the detent sticks or otherwise breaks. The trans needs to come out to repair it. You will Probably have to replace the trans.

Speaking of trans replacements,we had some new style GE washers come through the shop a few years ago,that leaked through the center.Even with new center seals installed. Finally talked to a GE tech,who said if they still leak with new center seals,the transmission needed to be replaced,with one with an oversize shaft. Sound familiar to anyone?

If it's a '95 or newer washer with T1-T8 in the model #,
the tub brake has failed. The tub starts to spin during agitation and throws water up the sides of the outer tub and through the overflow tube. There is a tub brake kit to fix this. Easier to replace the whole transmission. Gotta love GE quality!!!!!!!!!!!!
