Laundress---thanks for the link on the new Maytag compact FL. I figured it must be made by a different manufacturer because there's actually a window in the door! I've always stayed away from 'tags because of their 'No View In' policy.

Other than what I've found so far, there isn't anything else about new Maytag units elsewhere. Seems odd the washers do not have a water heater/booster as IIRC many Samsung washers have that feature, as does Maytag's Neptune washers.

Will be interesting so to see these units up close, but Maytag had better hurry to get them launched, as Speed Queen washers and dryers will be out on October 15th. That is going to make for some interesting competition.

I think this is another boneheaded move on Maytag's part. Just because I really like Maytag does not mean I am blind to their (increasing) stupidity.

Does anyone have real world experience with Samsung? My few experiences with Samsung electronics have been less than encouraging.

If they wanted this segment, I wish they would relabel the Fridgemore FL.

On the other hand...maybe Samsung builds reliable FL's. I like the Neptunes, have since they were introduced, but the Neptunes have not been generally trouble free.

Maytag needs a compact under counter washer and dryer to remain competitive against FriGeMore's, LG's, Bosch and others. It it much cheaper to slap their name on an existing product (with perhaps a few tweaks to suit a different market), than do R&D, and the whole other host of costs and risks in bringing a new appliance to market. No new plants to build, product is marketed through existing chains of distribution, investment is mimimal.


Samsung washers have a decent repair/reliability record and seem to give good service where they are currently sold.

The Asian appliance makers are gaining a reputation for putting out quality appliances at decent prices, and are fast becoming players in the gobal market. Ten or twenty years ago no one would touch a Japanese or Chinese made car, but look at things today!

Maytag is increasingly finding itself between a rock and hard place. More and more of it's American competitors are shifting production either off shore or to Mexico or Canada to gain lower costs. The appliance makers that come to the United States, such as Bosch are able to build new plants that are much more efficient than many older established plants, and they run with less workers and usually are not union. This lowers their costs, as does the fact much R&D and production can be done elsewhere and imported to the States.

I really hope you're right about Samsung washers. I've been following Haier's attempt to conquer the States, and so far have not been pleased with what I have heard about that company, or their products.

However, this may be different, because of the already well established Maytag service and parts network.

I will admit it. Globalization of heavy industry worries me deeply.

I am not sure how I feel about this, even though I like some imported appliances a great deal, particularly the very quiet, if trouble prone, Asko Asea dishwasher line.

Samsung and Haier are not in the same league at all.

Which? (a Consumer Report's type publication in the UK),rated Samsung Washers a best buy several years in a row. In fact IIRC the Samsung washer came in second in the last report, with the Bosch Maxx first.

I've been comparing Samsung washers from their website to the one shown in the Maytag brochure and they look pretty much the same, with perhaps the door being slighlty different and hinged on the right, where as the Maytag version is hinged on the left.

Basically all Samsung has to do for the American market is switch the electric's over to 120v 15amp power, it may be interesting to see how this is done. On the Danby front loaders, there is actually a transformer in the washer, so maybe the imported MaySungs will have the same.

We will know more when Maytag repair people start chiming in after coming back from courses armed with training on how to repair these units.

Globalization is the name of the game and it is here to stay. Even more so for big ticket items like major appliances that require huge R&D and factroy investment to produce.

As for Asko, IIRC at one time Asko was part of GE, or at least that is what I remember reading. Which explains much about the problems that seemed to infest every appliance Asko made. The only worst front loader around at that time was Creda.

For Maytag's sake, one hopes they get this one right. It is so hard watching yet another former mighty appliance giant fall. IMHO Maytag simply got too big for their pants and took their eye off the ball. Maytag "Dependable Care" washing machines were for years the gold standard of washing machines, but now look at them.

If Maytag were smart they'd stop chasing every appliance fad that comes out,and go back to producing quality appliances.

There were Maytag-labeled Asko's being sold in the UK a few years ago....not sure if they still are. The machines looked cool...stainless steel front cabinet.
