A friends mom is looking at buying a new top loader. She does not want a front loader. I told her I had read some issues here about the neptune tangling. If that is the machine with the two impellers on the sides of the tub. She was wanting one of those. What would you guys recommend for her ? Of course my recommendation would be a Kenmore. My family has always had great service from Kenmore machines. However the last set I bought was in 1991, I dont know if there are any issues with the latest models. What are your recommendations ?

I would think a Sears would probably be one of the better choices. Some don't care for the direct drive models, but I've not had any negative issues or experiences with those I have been exposed to, either in operation or reliability. I would definitely suggest a model with 3 washing speeds. The "medium" speed is what I use for pretty much everything but sturdy whites.

I'd probably stick with a standard agitator washer myself if going with a toploader. Others to consider would be the Fisher Paykel and perhaps the new Speed Queens.

See (Deluxe) Thread #214. The Fisher&Paykel offers a stainless steel tub, available high-speed spin (1000 rpm)---handy for folks who wash a lot of towels. The Kenmore is o.k. --porcelain tub, "Cruel-Action" agitator. SQ would hold a really large load, and I think their (Normal speed) spin is around 700 rpm, stainless steel tub.

The new speed queens are pretty nice,....especially the front loaders.I do not know the price of their least expensive top-loader is,but they do have the porcelain steel outer tubs and very good warranties.Surgilator style agitators and ss washbaskets.I hope these new machines for home use hold up with no major problems.

If she is anything like my wife, her husband is on these sites learning about product (too much!!) and she is against any suggestion he has.

Any husband who strays from this theme, does so at his own peril. For if the suggested appliance does not work he is in for countless lectures that begin with "well if you just had listened to me........ but NO, you wouldn't listen".

I asked my friend a yesterday evening why her mom did not want a front loader. She said she did not know why. she might be afraid of loading and unloading being an issue. I dont know.

I told Janet (my friend) We needed to take her mom and a basket full of clothes to Sears and have her load and unload the clothes into a top loader and then into a front loader.

Janet purchased Duets a couple of months ago and just simply LOVES THEM. I told her we needed to talk to her mom about front loaders.

You don't have to worry about opening the door on a Frigemore and getting water everywhere; you can add anything during the cycle with no problem. I thought loading a "missed article" would be a problem with FL machines but I was proved wrong!

Maybe she wants her laundry done in a couple of hours or less. With a frontloader, it could take her all day. (Long cycle times)

Cycle times are not that much longer.

If she refuses to accept society then have her buy the Fisher & Paykel. To buy any other top loader is a waste of money.

Do not thank buying all other top loaders besides the FP is an "waste of time". The new SQ washers are well built and will do the job well.
