Assuming you are referring to top-loaders, if the water came in from the bottom, then how would a spray rinse be done?

I have a UK Hotpoint TL from the 1980's and that agitates whilst filling. It is supposed to start the detergent working with the water and aid stain removal. As far as I can see, it does nothing at all. |

I remember the old Thor's (at least the ones I saw) would begin to agitate as soon as they were started and the water began to enter the tub. I would think that would create quite a bit of fabric damage over time. Don't know of any top-loaders sold in the US now, that would do that----although I understand after much discussion on this web site, that the Fisher & Pakel's "test" their water levels by agitation, when set on "automatic" water level settings. |

I think that some of the earlier automatics may have agitated while filling because you could first disolve the detergent, before putting the clothes in. I still do this. It must be a habit from my old wringer washer days. |

whirlpool spacemaker
The newer Whirlpool-made (aka Kenmore, GE) spacemakers fill from the bottom, or actually into the outer tub. There are spray rinses, but the water does not hit the spinning clothes in the basket. The spray just rinses out the outer tub. |
