Have liked washing machines since i was 2, i was 5 when i started doing laundry. I love old zanussi washers especially the old Jetsystem ones with the grey panels from 1980s. Below is a 1990 Zanussi FL812 washer with an ultra quiet induction motor. I look forward to meeting new ppl on this forum

I was given the motor for one of those machines even thought they were never sold here in Aus.

A few years ago my partner and I wanted a rainwater tank built for the house we were/are building. We contacted a couple who came out and made on site a couple of concrete water tanks. They are English migrants who had lived here a few years, they brought out all their appliances and their parents did the same. They saw my collection of washing machines and parts in the garage and told me about their beloved Zanussi which had conked out. No local repairer would touch it. I looked at it, the electronic motor controller had died. It was a brush motor model but looked just like your photo, it was 1000 rpm spin. I chased up electronic chip suppliers and found that the motor controller chip was available in UK from an electronics supplier. (This was older technology, a generic motor control chip, these days the chips would be unique to the model and not available separately.) I ordered a couple of the chips and fitted one when they arrived. I still have the spare. The washer worked perfectly when I repaced the chip and a couple of other electronic components. I was very impressed as it worked perfectly on our solar power system, which at that time had a very unsophisticated square wave inverter, and this was the only front loader which has ever worked properly on it. (Now I have a sine wave inverter which is much better.) the Zanussi also used very little power.

The owners were very happy to have their Zanussi working, they said their parents had just wrecked their Zanussi which was the induction motor model, they didn't realize the parts wouldn't be compatible. They gave me the motor in case it ever came in handy. So far it hasn't but I still have it.

Murphy's Law - if I hang on to it, I will never see another Zanussi again. If I throw it away, within a week I will stumble across a Zanussi that needs it....

Welcome aboard, Kyle! Yes, lots of kids from the UK showing up here lately. So here's a question: what era do you consider vintage in household equipment?

Re. solar power inverters: Yes, avoid square-wave inverters like the plague, they also kill electronics such as computers & telephone equipment, probably also kill home theatre equipment as well. I don't even know if square wave inverters are made any more. Get the best sine-wave inverter you can afford.

Also build in some extra capacity. Photovoltaic (solar power) panels are going to be coming down in price once some of the new technologies go into mass production in the next few years, so it'll be relatively less costly to add capacity in the years to come.

If you've got solar or your utility has wind or nuclear or hydro, you'll be spared the pain the rest of us are going to endure this winter...

That's exactly the same washer i have in my new place. I have no idea how to use it because I have never seen one like it before (used to very simple dials) and most of the letters etc, are smudged or gone.
Can you give me a very basic run down of how to operate this machine. I need to do laundry! Thanks :)

Hi Kyle! An excellent old machine, as you are probably aware knowing the FL range that it was supperseeded in the early 90,s by the later split cabinet/tub range leading to development of Nexus machines. The old 812 had a brief facelift to a white facia an was marketed as an 816 as did the 1012 to the 1016, 1023 range was dropped.Do try and avoid 1013 jetsystem turbodry as was alot of greif!! Have you seen much of the Z range of washcraft ZANNUSSIs, very similar but 1000rpm model had a clutch system on the motor, I spent an large chunk of my youth (your age actually!!) reconditioning these machines. Hang on to that machine its a legend, i still have spares for it too!!! Kind Regards
