The washing machine at our work has crashed totally. It is a Hoover Newwave, similar to the one Newwawe1 has, only difference is the colour on the program button. On his machine it is white and on ours its black. I think thats the only difference.

I mostly do the washes at work and everything works perfect, but today an not so smart girl was using it. She was reparing her car and had a few carpets in the car that she decided to wash. Those were quite big, but she didnt care. Now, sadly i was away buying food (Mcdonalds) when she started the washer.

When i came back i heard the machine was running but didnt check who was using it. Time goes on and suddenly someone said that it smelled burned from the room where the washer is. I go there and find the machine smoking from the backside and of course That is NOT good. This girl who used it comes in and just go "oh i destroyed it, ok, can you repair it?" She didnt even seemed to care that she destroyed it.

I just gave her a dark look because i know that i havent recycled so many of these machines and have absolutely no spare parts to this machine.

It would be good if we could we buy a new one but because at our work we have a budget that is already screwed for the next year ,i dont know how to fix this.

Did i mention this girl is blonde?

The most likely result from washing car carpets in a front loader would be a torn boot. I did this in my Neptune early on, and the result was that the hard plastic backing on the carpets abraded the boot. There was a slight smell of burnt rubber/plastic, as well.

Otherwise I think it's kind of difficult to kill a front loader by overloading it. I have washed polypropylene area rugs up to 5' x 7' in the Neptune without mishap. I fold them up carefully and place them in the washer so that they are likely to be wedged against the sides of the drum, and not against the door.

The "smoke coming out the back" of the Swedish front loader might be the result of an abraded boot... and the air vent is probably at the back of the washer.

That's probably where oversudsing probably comes out as well.

Advice the dumb blonde next time to take her car carpets to a laundromat with an inattentive or non-existent attendant.

This is what I would give the dumb blonde, and then I'd fix the pump. This is a common problem when rubber backed rugs are washed in a front loader. Some shreds of the rubber backing probably slipped into the outer tub through the boot (recipient, the dumb blonde, lol) and got sucked into the discharge pump. This was commonly done by my numbskull ex-neighbors at the apartment complex I lived at until 01/30/2003 where we had 2 Speed Queen high efficiency front loaders. I don't miss apartment life one bit, nor the sharing of washing machines. Good luck to you and your Hoover. May it recover fully. Happy washing!

I can't understand why anyone would put car carpets in a washer in the first place. Think of all the stuff you get on your shoes whilst walking about in the cities. Notably dog doo. And then you get back in the car and all of that gets on the car carpets. Eww....

Better, take the car carpets out, put them on the pavement, squirt some liquid detergent on 'em, and scrub with a brush of the type you'd use to scrub floors. Rinse by hosing the suds off, scrub some more, rinse some more, hang on a line or leave them out in the sun for a day, and "done!" It's not like you have to wash the darn things every week...

I have also done my car mats in my F/L-er with pine oil to disnfect. I don't skieve/skeeve (sp? ) what I did one bit.

In theory there should be no traces of YUK in the machine when it is done.

Ah sorry you misunderstanded that. It wasnt an car carpet. It was an ordinary carpet just like the one below and there was two in the machine.

My guess is that the motor broke, but i,m not sure. I have repaired another washer and placed there instead for now. This is because we dont have any spareparts to the Hoover and for now we cant afford buying a new one (long story)

I wash my car carpets in warm water with a soak (overnight), a pre-wash and then a double time mainwash. When you see the water during the prewash, it's brown and dark, but every time they are sparkling clear.

Regular carpets I wash also at home. My washer is equipped with a motor with extra capacity. So, never a motor problem.

Seeing now one of the carpets in question... I vote for some tassels breaking off and clogging this or that.

I wouldn't be so harsh on the young lady. Unless she forcibly overstuffed the washer, it might not be her fault. But if she had to cram the rugs in there... then that was rather unintelligent.

Today i took the time to check out what fault it was with the machine.

1 One of the transit bolts was not removed!. A tip for Newwawe1 who has an similar washer. Check on the backside if all transit bolts are removed. The machine has apparently washed this way since it was buyed. Probably not very good. This also explain why the washer has wander around the floor when spinning.

Sudsmaster said a thing about the washer maybe being on the verge of failure. To that i can safely say Yes!, i do belive that.

2 The drum had got stuck. You cant move it, not even an inch. I checked the bearings and it seemed they got so hot the drum just "frooze". To make the machine work again we need new bearings.

3 The burned smell and the smoke must have come from the motor. Its totally fried and needs to be replaced. I was surprised the motor didnt had no overheat protection, but it has an tacometer. Hmm strange.

4 This machine is an wash/dry combo but the dry part hasnīt worked since 2001. This is due to a faulty element. Also needs to be replaced.

Sounds like it was marginal and about to fail three different ways, and the poor girl happened to get "lucky" and be the "proximate cause" of the breakdown.

Also sounds like a lot of expensive & time consuming work to fix. More like a restoration than a repair. But if the machine is a good model then it's clearly worth it, and might be worth spending some additional effort replacing other minor parts that might also fail sooner than later. And of course cleaning out any dust or whatever on the inside of the cabinet.

Personally the only way I'd put car carpets or household rugs in a washer is if I could sanitize the washer either via hot water or bleach after the rugs were done.

Is there any point to placing threads on here that are a figment of someones imagination???? Show us a real photo of the Hoover and/or the "car" carpets and maybe then we can eat our words in the same way the "car" carpets were eaten by the poor washing machine!

I have only worked there from 2001 and how on earth would i have ANY reasons to check if all transit bolts were removed. No one cared that the machine was moving around when spin, so why would i care.

If it was mine i would care, yes, but thats different.

When i,m finished taking photos i will send it to Fujufilm and get on CD-ROM. I have taken photos of the one machine i repaired and some more so just have patience.

How many do you think has a camera at job? If i had i could have taken photos of the Hoover and the carpet. But did you mean i should take the bus home and get it, huh?
