Well, if someone could come up with a washing machine that uses no water, how about one that DOES use water but no soap? Well now, Haier has come up with just that! According to the article on Engadget:

"Washing machines that somehow remove the odors and spots from your garments sans the use of water have been around the block a time or two, and while we've heard a mad scientist claim that he discovered soap-free cleaning, it's Haier who's making him look brilliant. The detergentless WasH20 reportedly works by breaking down water molecules into OH- and H+ ions, and while we hardly recall the last chemistry course we took, we suppose we'll believe the claims for now. Apparently, the stains on the linens are "attracted and retained by ions of OH-, while the clothes are sterilized by the H+ ions." Word on the street has this one landing in France soon for around €699 ($957), but don't be surprised if your threads come out of the wash mutated, vaporized, or worst of all, smelling exactly like they did when they went in."

Hmm. That last sentence might make us feel unsure about trusting our laundry with this thing.

i guess that's why they're going to France before anywhere else!

Because the French don't mind a magic washer that warps or banishes thier laundry since they have the time, money and patience to buy new clothes and linens all the time?

Wonder what those two dispenser drawer-looking things are on the front of the machine, then?

Handgrips for moving it ....

...out to the curb?

After you wanna banish it from your household because it made your laundry pull a Houdini or pull a witch spell transformatio?

Real?

Is this a "dream machine" that someone wants to build or is it in production? I would like to see it preform before I judge it. Still, there are some grand claims there. Let the results of a real wash be our guide.

I am old school. Give me a washer with WATER in the tub and a good head of SUDS!!!
As Haier is a Chinese company, I wonder what Chairman Mao would say about this machine.

I bet Chairman Mao himself would use the grips in the front to move this washer out to the curb.

handles for moving...

Out to the curb?? Nope. They're for dragging it back to the store to get the $957 back.

This looks like the beginnings of a cult...the devil's washer...stay away!

It probably is in prodution to hit France soon.

I hate such washing machines and I hope they´ll never come over to Germany!
I think I should buy 3 Miele washers for reserve-who know´s?
Sometime there maybe will only be washers like that above?

Well, it's only because using detergent will corrode the cheaply made components which are made out of blancmange, papier maché and whipped egg whites.

Now now now....

I must say I love the design of the machine. Big chrome door, not the average white on white design, the rounded control panel etc. Hopefully this machine can also do normal cycles with detergent. And what about a matching dryer?

Post# 257685-1/4/2008-14:53 ||| funguy10 (Akron,OH)

Well, if the machine does not have any normal cycles that use water and detergent the clothes will be dry out of the washer and we won't need a dryer.

For those who speak French here's the link to the Haier website. It can wash with detergent too and it rinses and spins too, so the clothes come out wet most of the time I guess.

Didn't Dyson investigate detergentless washing, when they were creating the Contrarotator?

I believe that particular focus was discounted because of "indications that it wouldn't work with chlorinated water supplies..." or words to that effect via Mr Dyson, when he was commenting upon another detergentless washer (was it the Korean Daewoo toploader one, a few (5,6,7)years ago???).

(Surely though, a filter could be incorporated into the Dyson to filter chlorine out?)
