I have another one, I like it that my name was not beginning with a Capital, actually it's forAloysius but that looks so silly. SUBJECT: RE: A suggestion (Vote for Capital Case)
MESSAGE: Thanks Louis, I can certainly have the system display our names in all lowercase, its probably not worth the extra server processing time to analyze each persons upper or lower case request, so lets just decide on what we want, ALL UPPDERCASE, all lowercase or First Letter Upper Case.

Vote for what you would like to see:
-ALL UPPDERCASE
-all lowercase
-First Letter Upper Case.

I vote First Letter Upper Case, but it really doesn't matter to me.

SUBJECT: RE: Wonderful!!!!!!!!
MESSAGE: Thanks Louis, this will be so nice to have all of our scans and pictures organized in one easy place to find them. Yahoo Photos was good for a start, but we need a real Library! Most of us have lots to contribue so will figure out some standards such as 100dpi and the such for the scans and we will fill the libraries with goodies!

This is really the start of a new, more powerful information era for us Appliancevillians or Appliancevillers or what ever we call ourselves.

MESSAGE: Before we make any decisions about where to post, lets give it a few days of testing to find any bugs and how important they are to be fixed before "Going Live". As for Yahoo Classic Appliances I know there was some resistance to stop using Yahoo, so I no reason why we cant use both. We do have more control and powerful features here, but I'm not positive that they all work properly yet. This is my first attempt at programming in HTML, Perl and Javascript.

SUBJECT: Look what I just found
MESSAGE: Look what I just found on my hard drive, dated September 9, 2000. This time I can fit it all in one message! Remember this:

------------
Hi everyone, I was recently asked what is the difference between the Unimatic and the other Frigidaire washers and I wanted to give an explanation for those who might not know.

The Unimatic transmission was designed and built by a Frigidaire engineer named Kenneth O'Sissen back in the late 1930's. Kenneth, who was hired by Frigidaire after working at Bendix where he invented the incrementing timer for their bolt-down washer and Kenneth’s basic timer design is still used today in some washers and dishwashers. His Unimatic, (Uni. meaning one and Matic short for automatic) consisted of a pulsator crankshaft & spin cage/brake assembly type transmission located on the top, a motor mounted in the middle and a water pump mounted underneath the motor. It was one complete direct drive unit without any clutches, drive belts or pulleys. The motor ran at 1140rpm, the gearing ratio in the pulsator part of the mechanism made the agitator go up and down in a 1 7/8” stroke at 330 pulses per minute. Since there was no gearing in the spin section of the mechanism, the tub spun at the same rate as the motor -- 1140rpm, which made for incredibly dry clothes. Because of the war effort it wasn’t until 1947 that Frigidaire introduced this mechanism in its very first washer, model WJ-60. Unimatic washers for domestic use were continued to be produced through 1958.

In 1955 Frigidaire engineers experimented with a belt-drive mechanism and introduced the Pulsa-Matic mechanism on its lower end washer model WV-35. The Pulsa-Matic agitated up and down at a very rapid 630ppm and also spun the tub at 630rpm, which was the slowest spinning full-size washer GM Frigidaire ever produced. Because of the rapid agitation with the Pulsa-Matic, Frigidaire shortened the length of the stroke of the agitation from 1 7/8" to 3/4". This change in agitation stroke and pulse rate did reduce the rate of turnover of the clothes which made for less tangling, but did not clean anywhere near as well as the Unimatic’s agitation. For this reason the Pulsa-Matic only lasted 4 years as they continued to market it in '56, '57 and '58. These models (WV-35, WS-56, WD-56, WS-57, WD-57, WS-58, WD-58 and WDP-58) are now some of the rarest of the Frigidaire washers and I only know of one collector that has one of these Pulsa-Matic washers.

The only major design of the Unimatic washers outside of the normal yearly changes in the cabinet and control panels was the introduction of the 3-Ring Agitator in 1956, with a neoprene rubber, gray colored cap, lint-chaser ring and circulator ring. The same colors were used in ’57 and a bleach cup was added. In ’58 Frigidaire’s advertising firm suggested that they color the rings (sort of like they did in the ’57 magazine ad’s), so the cap became turquoise, the lint chaser ring became yellow and the circulator became a coral color.

In 1959 Frigidaire introduced their first coin-operated washer (model WCOZ). The WCOZ used the Unimatic tranny and coin-op Unimatics were produced until 1964. Starting in 1965 Frigidaire introduced other coin-op machines with various mechanisms and continued to make them until the mid 70’s. About 1962 Frigidaire introduce their top-loading Dry-Cleaner, it too used the Unimatic mechanism and I'm not sure how long it was produced for (anyone out there know????).

For the new 1959 domestic washer line Frigidaire discontinued the Unimatic (for home use) and completely discontinued the Pulsa-Matic. They now introduced the Multi-Matic which was nothing more than a very advanced version of the Pulsa-Matic. It consisted of two drive belts (one for agitate and one for spin), a new two speed motor and a special clutch to shift drive power between the two belts. This arrangement produced Frigidaire's first multi-speed washer, allowing for 330ppm for normal wash speed or a 220ppm delicate speed as well as a 850rpm high spin speed and a 330rpm delicate spin speed. Because of the slower 330ppm Frigidaire was now able to return the agitator stroke back to a full 1.25" just like the old Unimatic. For the 1963 line Frigidaire introduced it's new 12lb capacity tub, but unfortunately for both the 1963 and 1964 line Frigidaire cheapened the clutch design of the Multi-Matic which dropped the high spin speed from 850 all the way down to 710.

In 1965 (actually it was the end of the year 1964) Frigidaire introduced the Roller-Matic mechanism. This was now a belt-less mechanism again with rollers of different sizes to drive the transmission. They also brought back the high speed spin of 1010rpm (not quite as fast as the 1140 of the Unimatic, but still very impressive). The Imperial and Custom Imperial washers had this 1010 “Rapidry spin” as well as a 650 mid level spin and a 330 low speed spin. Agitation speeds remained at 330 normal or 220 delicate speeds. In '65 they also introduced the "Deep Action Agitator" which was also referred to as "Jet-Action". They had been experimenting with this 3-cone agitator since 1962 when they stated placing it in their coin-op machines, but for some reason waited until '65 to introduce it into the domestic line.

The 1970 line brought some very big changes. They introduced the new 1-18 washer with big 18lb perforated tub and the Jet-Cone agitator. The normal agitation speed was brought up from 330ppm to 360ppm and the spin speed was lowered from 1010 to about 660. They day's of the high speed spin were now over, even though its 660 was still the fastest spin available through the 1970's.

Of course in 1980 GM sold off Frigidaire it will never be the same :( . For a few years they kept the same general look of the cabinet and control panel of the 1-18 but inside was a 1970's design Westinghouse Top-Loading washer, one of the worst top-loader washer designs ever. It was a very dark-day in applianceville. The first time I saw this new Frigidaire after catching my breath, I nearly cried. I don’t need to describe to anyone out there in applianceville what WCI is producing now as a top-loader.

If anyone has any additions to add this piece of history, that would be really great!

MESSAGE: Quite a spiffy piece of work, Uni!  It was acting a little flaky for a short while, especially in Netscape, but things seem to have cleared up now.

I do have a few comments and suggestions . . .

1.  On the discussion area, where you have the pink section showing the message topics, and the white section for the text of the messages, it would be helpful to have a larger, more visible frame line between them to facilitate resizing the two frame sections.

2.  As Louis suggested, a "next" and "back" link when perusing posts would be helpful, but the Archive section also works well for that.

3.  Can you add Fisher & Paykel wallpaper?  I know that's not exactly vintage, but . . .

4.  I LOVE the picture-of-the-day feature!

5.  Will club members have their own photo album areas for posting pictures?

6.  What is the possibility for having a "preview post" function, for purposes of proofreading and editing before final submission?

7.  How much server space is available for our domain?

8.  You might consider using hyphens or underscores in the .htm filenames, instead of spaces.  Current versions of IE and Netscape generally replace the spaces with "%20", but, as I've heard, some browsers have trouble with spaces in filenames.  It's also a little disconcerting to see the Address or Location field in the browser report the page as http://www.classicappliances.com/NEW%20DISCUSS/DISPLAY%20PAGES/POST%20A%20NEW%20MESSAGE%20PAGE.htm.  8-)

But I don't think the ellipsis was the problem, because I just noticed there is also one on point number 3 about the Fisher & Paykel wallpaper.  Could have been the quotation marks.

MESSAGE: Hi Dadoes, thanks for all those great suggestions. Here are my responses to each one...

#1. I tried adding a visiable frame line between the frames, and this works great for us at 800x600 and above, but there are quite a few of us at 640x480 screen resolution and it took up quite a lot of screen real estate. I can still add them if we think is necessary though, just want to be thoughtful of those who have smaller screens. Let me know.

#2. NEXT and PREV post buttons I will look into coding this during the long holiday weekend coming up. This is going to take a lot of coding and I want to get the other small bugs out first before I start adding major code.

#3. DONE, you can change your wallpaper by going into the Edit My Profile button.

#4. Thanks, I have 24 pictures loaded, but I'm going to upload more tonight. The system generates a random number every day to pick a new picture.

#5. Eventually it would be nice to figure out a way that everyone can post their own pictures. But for now lets all continue using Yahoo Photos. For stuff being added to the libraries anyone who wants to add something can scan it at 100dpi and email to me and I will add it for now.

#6. I will look into a preview feature, I don't think this is going to be as hard to write or as server-tasking as the PREV and NEXT buttons, so I will try and do that this week.

#7. Hispeed (our server company) says we have unlimited server space, but I don't believe that. I bet its around 500mb or so.

#8. I change the files names of the pages but our users really wont need to know the exact name, they just want a button to click to do all the work.

MESSAGE: Would it be possible to have a " View Replies to this Message Key" that would pull up a list of message postings that were a reply to an orginal post. Yahoo has a feature like this and it could be a handy tool if we are researching a topic from the archives. The keyword search would work for this too, but the View Replies would be nice for more specific on topics. Not something vital that we'd need right away, but down the road would be nice to have - just a little more powerful edge?

The Speed Queen logo with the queen with the perfectly horizontal hair, like on Greg's 54's?

Not to mention the different Frigidaire crowns. How about a background with the spiffy woman in long gloves and crown " doing the sheer look" ?

Isn't there a Kelvinator and/or ABC logo?

Robert: for the logos, do you get them from digital pics you take or from literature scans?

Oh God, Monica Kaufmann has white hair! That woman has more hair styles than Dolly Parton has wigs! She's a news anchor here...

SUBJECT: POTD 5/22
MESSAGE: Those Westy coin-op were in every laundry room at the University of Rochester in 1981. They were replaced with Maytags in 1983. The ones in the basement of my dorm were significantly older than the ones in the rooftop laundry, and the old ones washed and spun significantly faster than the newer ones, such that the indexing tub didn't seem to hinder washing too badly. Love the way they took the side-opening lid, put a hinge on the back and put the little chrome handle on the front. The only purpose for the lid switch was to sense that the lid was down, so when the washer went into spin, the lid lock solenoid was activated. You could fake it out with a pencil, then leave the lid up for spin observation. I think the old SQ coin-ops did the same.

I thought it was a neat machine.

SUBJECT: RE: POTD 5/22 (spin speed?)
MESSAGE: Not the dorm basement machines. If the new machines upstairs were washing at about 60 spm, the basement machines were at 70-80. Kinda like comparing a Maytag wash speed to a GE. They were much more vigorous and brisk. I'd assume the spin was faster. I couldn't tell by dryer time, as those Westy dryers were really bad, and each one dried differently.

SUBJECT: RE: POTD 5/22 (coin vs. domestic)
MESSAGE: Oh, I didn't mean that there was a difference between the coin and home models. I meant that the difference was between older and newer models. The basement machines had the plastic covered wire clothes guards, gray agitators with very deep cuts between the vanes and the barrel/skirt. The newer machines had light blue agitators with shallower cuts, plastic clothes guard. Seems to me the hole pattern in the tub was different too. The older machines made that curved-agitator-sucking sound as they washed; the newer machines just hummed along.

MESSAGE: It's definitely related to IE 4.xx. I have two computers at the office running IE4, and I get the script error on both when updating my profile, although the changes do appear to take effect. I don't get the script error on IE5/5.5 or Netscape 4.75. I've seen other sites that trigger script errors as well with IE4.

Just my opinion, but seems like the best solution would be for PeterH to upgrade his IE to insure compatibility with the latest script coding on all the sites he may visit.  It's easy to do.  Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and click on the "Product Updates" link -- NOT on the rather prominent link for IE 5.5.  Scroll through the list of available updates, and get your choice of either IE 5.02 or IE 5.5.  Be sure to also get all the Critical Updates, and look in the Recommended Updates section for the Microsoft Virtual Machine.  Some of the items must be a single download, then you reboot and go back to get more, until you have everything you need.  Beware that a browser upgrade will likely be a very large download -- it may start with a small "installer" that is only a few hundred KB, but then that will download the rest of the update, possibly as much as 17 MB.

With a Frigidaire 3-Ring or 2-Ring Agitator, I can get five to turn over, but usually I just wash four pairs at a time even in the Frigidare. Washing five pairs of jeans in a Frigidaire is hard on the rubber pulsator.

Whirlpool and Kenmore standard capacity machines claimed to have a 14lb capacity, but I don't really believe that.

Do you guys want to keep our first 200 some messages, or should I delete them tonight and we start fresh at message #1? I'll let you guys decided.

Also I could use a hand in writing the "help" section for Applianceville. Any volunteers? I just need a block text written that explains how to sign-up, login, post new and replied messages, etc. Any help would be appreciated, and this would help make the creation of Applianceville an Applianceville-wide effort.

Let's discuss...

About a year ago, I tried turning on instant messaging. That same evening I was uploading pictures to share with you guys when Chad pop in with an instant message asking me "Uni How Do I take apart my new ABC-O-Matic to lubricate it." What that did was to kill my upload and I had trouble getting logged back on after that. I immediately turned Yahoo Messaging off and never turned it back on.

I thought you log into instant messenger and you can instant message anyone else that is logged in to instant messenger? Why couldn't you continue to use that system? Maybe I don't understand it that well.

MESSAGE: Yes Robert, I'm seeing the original post in a box when composing the reply to that specific post. so, that's fine. I just wish that in the actual posts, I'd see something to the effect "message #260, reply to message #241". Incidentally, I'm using 800 X 600 16-bit resolution. Thanks.

MESSAGE: BOB once again, I'm not talking about the green message composition screen, I'm talking about the actual WHITE posted reply message with the logos in it. At the VERY BOTTOM (use the scroll bars in the white zone if necessary) is a box with not only the message number but the whole text.

Look at this screen shot of what I'm seeing on 6 different computers. Does everyone else get this reply box at the very bottom of their white reply messages?

SUBJECT: RE: New "bug" (Reply message view - )
MESSAGE: Maybe I'm mistaken - this is all so new still, but wasn't the orginal message (or a couple of lines) shown in a box at the bottom of the screen when you are just READING posts (not posting a reply to a message, just reading one already on the system) I could be wrong about it appearing in the "read-only" box, but if that's too much work to build, then a button that simply says "this message is in reply to message #xxx by (user name)" that we could use to flip back to the orginal message if needed.

I think the shaded (red) message numbers on yahoo was not only in conjunction with your browser's settings, but also that the message list refreshed each time you went to it or read another posting. The screen reloads each time you move within the message system so you would have the shading of the message numbers each time. Perhaps our system could automatically refresh the top message list each time a move is made to either read, reply or post a message. I think it does do this when you reply or post a message as you are in a different screen anyway and then go back to message list when finished. A couple of times when reading messages, there were more messages posted while I was reading and unless you hit refresh once in a while, you don't get those new ones on the list.

Are you overwhelmed yet Robert? You're doing fantastic - we don't want the whole world in one day, take two days!

MESSAGE: Thanks Bob, ok now I realize what we're dealing with. If you go back into the old posts in Netscape, does the white box and reply text appear before post #192? Another words does the reply boxes stop showing up after post 192? It might have to do with the fix that I put in last night to correct the link showing in the wrong spot on replies. Let me know what you find out. Thanks for your help.

And I didn't check any further.

176 does show it
181 through 184 do.
186 through 190 do.
192 through 194 do.
196 does.

I thought perhaps it was posts that have links that didn't quote the original message, but those aren't the only ones.

Post#197 and Post#199 should have the reply box, so it does sound like the fix I put in last night at message 192 screwed up Netscape reply boxes. In the words of my grandmother, OY. Oh Robert, sweet Robert.....How about putting something in if you can that will automaticaly log us in like with Yahoo and some other sites? I suppose I could remember(really means not be so lazy) to log in everytime I come to the site but it is so much easier just to click the link and be logged in. Oh, and would it be too much trouble to try and make the main message page update by itself? When I am done reading all the posts I have to go back and refresh the page to see new posts.

BTW, I'm not having any problems with IE5.5.

Louis, I think I know what your problem is. This is what happens to me, maybe it's the same with you. When I read the posts without logging in I can see the ones I have already read BUT if I log in all of the one I have read are now marked as unread. So I figure if I log in first than read the posts it should all be marked correctly and stay that way for future log ons.
