MESSAGE: Arrrooohhh, I'm sure I wouldn't make a choice, I would get both. I prefer the frontloader (a Miele ofcourse) but I find the toploaders more fascinating. Actually I would buy three, a toploading H-axis too.
As for wetting the load, all frontloaders I know don't have any difficulty with that. After the first fill to a certain level, the laundry sucks up water. When the level gets lower the washer starts filling again to the same level again. Some washers have a button for increasing water, my Miele has one too, but it's more for exceptional items or so. SUBJECT: RE: Finally! New Laundry Room Done
MESSAGE: I still have the other laundry room also - it's nearly empty now - only 3 machines left in there now. Since it's population is down and I have most everything I need to paint and install shelves, I'm going to do that right now before I fill it up with machines again. It's badly in need of paint and "sprucing up" and it will be a lot easier with fewer machines. When all is said and done, I'll have spaces for ten washers and four dryers between the two rooms - I wonder if Skyler will give up space in his play room.....just kidding!

MESSAGE: I adore the little round Bendix Standard - it is such a cutie. Several of the club members have them. They aren't the best washer by any means, but for their time in washer history, quite a marvel. I had it hooked up and running, but because of space limitations, it's mostly "ornament" now. The extraction is so poor, I can wring more water out by hand after the cycle has ended.
The Economat is the one with the suction water extraction - I have the service manual for that machine and should post the tips for use. It's a fine agitation machine, but the extraction performance is comparable to the Bendix "S." I would still rather have either of these machines versus a wringer washer, which explains their popularity in their day. Have you read the Consumer Reports & Consumer Research Bulletin on these machines that Robert posted here? It's quite interesting.

MESSAGE: It shocking because while we have seen HE Washers from the likes of Maytag (with their Neptune), Frigidaire (with their own model as well as those they design for GE, Gibson and then Sears (for THEIR Kenmore model), a start up like Staber hit the seen and imports like F&P making it over here to the states (Miele has been here in the states for years..... and as far as I am concern, they have pioneered the concept), Whirlpool had yet to embrace the concept. Sure, they TRIED to make an attempt by introducing their "Resource Saver" washer, they have NEVER made attempt to either make a F/Ler either here in the states themselves, or at least try to import a couple of their machines over here from Europe (not unless you have go upstate to New York and find one). That's why the news was so shocking to me.
We did make some sort of discussion on THIS machine a while back, but as far as I can remember, no SERIOUS discussion has come of it.

SUBJECT: RE: New Whirlmore FLer (Is that right????)
MESSAGE: Whirlpool owns several European appliance lines and is having the experts over there design and build it, but to US standards of capacity. Why do you feel that Miele has pioneered anything? Certainly not automatic front loaders. They make a good quality machine and charge a lot for it, but they have not really pioneered anything over here. Miele did not make a bigger front loader for the US export market. WP was researching the concept for a long time, way back into the 90s, but the lack of acceptance of FLs in this traditionally TL culture caused WP to try to go with modifications to the TL design. In the meantime, the energy awareness of the country has sharpened and FL washers seem to be considered as a real alternative to TLs. There were only every two real contenders for the FL market here in the 50s and by the 60s it was only WH who kept the FL concept alive here. There was a long stretch when it was very difficult to find a low sudsing detergent outside of Sears for FLs. I don't think WP has done that badly with their timing for introducing this new FL of theirs. They were also smart to not design the thing from the ground up (reinvent the wheel) but build on their knowledge from their European experience. I also think that they are brilliant to realize that with domestic water heaters set so low for safety and energy savings they would need to make a provision for heating the water in the machine, something Neptune only recently came to do and the current Electrolux machines still don't. The dishwasher folks told us how chlorine is being phased out of dw detergents. You almost cannot buy bleach in Europe. I do not know what plans they have for laundry bleach here, but getting people accustomed to the idea of heating the water to get clothes white is smart. TT

MESSAGE: Maybe it's good to remind here that Whirlpool bought Philips large appliances in the eighties in order to enter the European market. Actually Philips only made H-axis toploaders for quite a few years. Only later they also made frontloaders. Philips is a dutch company, but the large appliances were manufactured in Italy.

SUBJECT: RE: New Whirlmore FLer (Is that right????)
MESSAGE: Good points, Tom:
You are correct. Miele did NOT pioneer the F/L washer concept here in the United States. No, not by a longshot. Here in the states, we have had the Westinghouses and Bendexes to turn to for decades. But while they were the only manufacturers to manufacture the "American" front loader, you have to admit that EVEN the VERY early front loaders tend to use a lot of water, and I might expect the Mieles from that era did the same thing, but I don't know that for certain. But maybe Louis can settle this score here (where are you at Louis??). But what they did do in my opinion was pioneer the art of cleaning clothes effectively using minicue amounts of water by using using a wash drum that turns in both directions, and by using internal heaters to heat the water that is inside the machine to up to 200 degrees (f) (something I know for certain none of the Bendexes (at least the VERY early ones..... and none of the ones I've seen here in America) and Westinghouses have never done). That's something that the Neptunes do today, and to a point, so do the Bosches (at least the ones I looked at here on the "net" a year ago do, as well as the F/L Amana. But the Westinghouses have never done it (heat their own water). Neither did the Bendexes. And you are right, today's Frigidaires (Electrolux) don't do that either. That's what I meant to say earlier.
As far as I know, they don't EVEN use bleach at all over there Europe. But I do like the concept of using heat as opposed to bleach to go getting my whites whiter over here in the United States. But I think in order for that to be effective, I think Whirlpool needs to take a page out of Miele's book and heat the water inside the machine to 200 degrees (f). And the matter about laundry bleach?? Let me just say that as long as we continue to use T/L's here in America, there is ALWAYS going to be a need for laundry bleach. I think that's my $.02 on the bleach subject.

SUBJECT: 1-18 belts and Water bellows on 1965
MESSAGE: have two problems that seem to perplex me
1) the belt on my Frigidaire 1-18 is slipping and making the washing tired. Is there an easy way to get this belt off or do I need to take out the pump asembley and motor to slip on the new belt.
2) I have removed the agitator from my custom delux and the nut on top of the water bellow seems to need a special tool or is there a way to get that off
The whirlpool thing ... well I just wish americans could make a washer that heated its own hot water. But I have not seen them either
And maybe Jetcone (I believe said) we should check out patent and bring back some of the older better built machines or at least bring us in as consultants on washers

MESSAGE: My '55 Duomatic has an internal heater activated with the selection of hot water wash. According to the service manual, it's rated at 4000 watts and is activated only during the main wash cycle. With an incoming hot water temp. between 140-160F, it helps to make a nice steamy wash. The heater is not thermostatically controlled, so it is not capable of raising the temperature of cold water by much during a 9-11.5 minute wash time. I rarely experience tangling problems with the Bendix, but in it's defense, it has a relatively large diameter drum which may help.
Most American homes have 30+ gallons of 120-140F available 24 hrs/day in a tank/heater that can keep up with the demands of a water thirsty top loading washer, purchased at a local Sears store for $399 or less. Convincing a culture to change it's laundry "standard" won't be easy. Power and water shortages will make some impact, but most people I know would never spend $1000+ for a washer if there's still an option at the $399 price point.

The control timer is in the middle and to the right of the timer are two columns of buttons; one for options and another for 5 different spin speed selections.
The timer is a circle of rubber buttons for fabric cycle selections with a start button in the center. The stainless steel tub looks large and easily accessible. The machine is currently only availabe in white and the price is $1,449 plus $50 for delivery and installation. The machine is available with the stand that elevates the machine about 10 inches. It's an additional $150. The machine looks impressive and reminds me of a washer one sees at a laundromat. Saleperson did not have any literature she would give me.

SUBJECT: RE: New Whirlmore FLer (Is that right????)
MESSAGE: Why do you think all of these features are Miele's? Commercial laundry equipment in this country dating back to the time of WWII and maybe before used reverse tumbling during washing and rinsing. Because of the lack of central systems for domestic hot water, European machines from all over, not just Miele and not just automatic tumblers, heated their own water. And to show you how opinions have changed, when the early combos offered water heating, the wizzards of wisdom at CU said that it was expensive to heat water in the machine and if hot water supplies were inadequate for the home, it was better to consider a larger water heater than a machine that would heat. And there were Bendix machines that did heat their water. After the introduction of the Duomatic with its 4 kw "Magic Heater" to hold the wash at 140F, Bendix offered the concept in some of the 115 volt washers. It was not as powerful and was not coupled to a timer delay, but it is on the historical record that Bendix offered a washer that heated water. The advances in front loading tumbler washer technology that came in Europe were probably helped, in large measure, by the fact that it was the dominant technology. Europe did not enjoy the large number of agitator-type wringer washers that we had here before WWII so they were not as wedded to this branch of laundry technology. The lack of fuel in Europe after WWII and the resulting need to conserve led manufacturers there to follow the efficient tumbler method used in commercial applications. As for the very early Bendix and WH machines using a great deal of water, they both, from the start instructed users to use half the soap or detergent that they normally would in a top loader. Compared to a wringer washer where you filled the machine once and reused the wash water over and over (and usually the rinse water, too), the first automatics did seem to use a lot more hot water with fresh wash and rinse water for each load, but I don't think you can really compare the water use of these early tumblers with today's because of the way technology has changed. The early machines were washing with soap, not detergents. Soap depended on suds to suspend the soil and was harder to rinse away and needed more water in both stages. Cold water rinsing was almost unheard of until synthetic fabrics came along. And why is it a page out of Miele's book to heat the wash to 200F? This is not a Miele exclusive. "Boiling the whites" is a European laundry process. Even my Creda offers a setting that high. Those machines are on 220 volt circuits, though, and if you remember the discussions about the Amana FL, while heating, it did not tumble and heat simultaneously. There was a minute of heat and a minute of the back and forth tumble. Raising the water temp to 150F in a typical home washer is going to take a good period of time if the water heater is set to 120-130F and you have that water traveling through cold pipes into a cold washer. Raising a load to 200F, even on 220 volts takes a bit of time in the Miele I use. Another thing is that Europeans are used to washing a load of white clothes in a cycle that can take around two hours for the maximum treatment. Americans are not. There are all kinds of considerations to be dealt with over here as opposed to what is done in Europe, such as the factor that over here 115 or 120 volts is the accepted norm for most household wiring and use whereas in Europe it is 220 or 230. I have no idea of what WP is going to offer, but I think faulting it for not being exactly like a European machine in all aspects, or even a Miele, which is not a machine that most people can afford, before seeing anything about its design and performance is a bit prejudicial. Tom

MESSAGE: Charles,
You are right, my mother's old Miele from 1975 used around 40 gallons. Main reasons were the somewhat higher water levels and the lack of spin cycles after the main wash and between the first three rinses (of five). The newest ones only use around 10 gallons.
BTW, European Whirlpool frontloaders also heat the water up to 200 degrees. Nevertheless I don't think that there are a lot of people who use the highest temperatures for doing their laundry. I wash my whites on 140F and my colors (jeans, t-shirts, socks etc.) on 105F. I never feel the need to choose a higher temperature.
As for bleach, we indeed never use chlorine bleach for laundry, but there are still people who use bleach for other cleaning purposes like cleaning toilets. European detergents contain oxygen bleach.

Yes I'm here watching over my Dad who is spending time in ICU and have not been on the ole' website for over a week. My friend Ardrianne, who works at the Newspaper here has lent me her terminal today so I have been catching up.
Can't wait to see that new kenmore F/L!!! I hope it is a little more stylish than the German machine Steve has found.
Something retro perhaps!
Phillippe: 1-18 belts are hard to replace as you have to either break the outer tub seal to drop the tranny or break open the pump and get a new pump seal kit. Pump seal kits were never easy to come by. Instead I would suggest you just tighten the motor adjusting bolts and see if that will cure "weak wash syndrome".
Question or club members:
Does anyone know the earliest GE Filter-Flo that had the "Quick Wash" feature?? I am using my friends' machine out here and I love the Quick Wash!!!! She needs a new top since her's is rusted big time bad.

SUBJECT: RE: New Whirlmore FLer (Is that right????)
MESSAGE: Tom,
I mostly second your view on this item. I'd like to add a few things though.
The early frontloaders weren't very frugal with water, I think they used about the same amount of water as toploaders did. Ofcourse there is a difference in hot water, but a the early frontloaders used very much rinse water. I still haven't found the reason why in Europe the frontloader got so popular. Perhaps it was just because a few technicians preferred the tumble washing technology over the agitator technology. I don't think lack of energy was the main reason.
After WWII the wringer washers overhere started to win it's fight into the European houses. There was only one difference with the US. Most houses didn't have a big watertank to fill the washer with. There were flow through water heaters, but only rich people could afford a big one with quite an amount of water flowing through. The rest had the really small flow through water heaters that produced perhaps 1/2 to 2/3 of a gallon hot water per minute. Most people already had a big electric hotplate to boil the laundry on, so after they purchased a wringer washer, they kept using the hotplate and put the laundry afterwards in the washer. Later there were non automatic agitator washers (no wringer, in combination with a spindryer) with a built in water heater Then it was only a small step to put a water heater in the frontloading machines. If some engineer would have made a different choice we could have had automatic agitator washers with built in water heaters!!!! I believe Constructa built the first frontloader in Europe in 1954. The Wirtschaftswunder had already started.

All you have to do is take off the hoses from the pump ports and its not an easy job if you dont have fox plier clamps. I replaced mine with the screw and band type clamps in case I have to do it again. Then I loosened the screws holding the motor to the bottom of the tub and slipped the belt under the pump and then up between the pump and suspension pylon and up. Then slip it around the mechanism making sure that the belt is on each side of it and onto the motor pully. 5 mins is all it takes after you loosen the screws and remove the clamps. tighten the screws and make sure there is 1/2'' deflection in the drive belt and you should be set. Put the hoses back onto the homeports and your back in business. Do Not do what I did and putz with the springs..if you do its a chore to get it right again. The belt cost me about 8 bucks and the part number for it is 5302834353. it will look different from what the current belt does and its cogged instead of smooth but thats for more flexability. It will work better once the belt is replaced.
I did the tightening thing too and i ended up breaking the belt on a load of towels and when the belt does break you dont have any spin or pump out abilty so if its giving you trouble now I would change it out before you go thru what I did.

SUBJECT: Sorry examples about newer appliances.....
MESSAGE: On a pleasant Saturday afternoon here in the nation's capitol today, I spent the day at a picnic catching up with family and old friends, and upon returning home from the picnic, guess what I found sitting outside in my neighborhood??
(01). A BOL Montgomery Wards 1 Speed/1 Cycle Clothes Washer.
(02). And, a Whirlpool Clothes Dryer (you know, the one that you would've found on sale at a local Circuit City just a few years ago for $188.00).
And to think when we have had Maytags, Frigidaires, and Kenmores from the old days that practically lasted forever, it makes me wonder what sort of state that the manufacture of today's newer appliances has fallen into. The world trade treaty cannot be that damn bad, could it?? A lot of appliances manufacturers (at least, the American ones) who used to manufacture quality products themselves back in the old days are now shipping their operations overseas to countries like Mexico to take advantage of lower cost materials and cheaper labor just so that they increase their bottom lines here in the states. And at whose expense?? Unfortunately, it's us, the consumer. When an appliance is washed up in four or five years (many years before their time) and then we have to throw it out and get a new one over and over again makes me sort of wonder, how much worse can this get?? And are we going to start seeing our BETTER brands go to the toliet in the next five to ten years??
Maybe perhaps, those appliance grave yards have better stay open and be open to better business pretty soon. I am afraid that their might be a demand on reviving older, but better built appliances very soon.
What a shame...... A damn shame (about today's newer appliances)

But at about $1,500.00 for the projected price of the washer, I would think that for just a few hundred more dollars, I might as well start considering getting a Miele.

SUBJECT: Question on what I was doing???
MESSAGE: HI Everyone:
I am home now , my Dad is doing much better so I can concentrate on washers for awhile.
I am asking anyone I promised to do something for to tell me what it was so I can do it. You see after the crisis last week all those favors have vanished and I can't recall what I said I'd do for members.
Greg I know I am searching for a part for you. And Mark Harman there was a part you wanted but I can't remember what it was.
So if you could all help me to refresh my memory so I can honor my promises it would greatly help things along.

SUBJECT: RE: New Whirlmore FLer (Is that right????)
MESSAGE: Louis, over here the early FLs did more spinning than your early ones. The Bendix Home Laundry settled on a cycle that washed, spray rinsed, spun, gave a deep rinse, spun then gave a second deep rinse and a final spin. WH took a while to finalize their rinsing sequence, but did spin at least once between the wash and rinse. I found a German made FL with the Frigidaire name on it at a thrift store years ago and John went and bought it. It does not spin at all until the end of the cycle. Good spinning during rinsing really helps cut down on the amount of water a machine uses, but John does not worry about rinsing like I do. Don't you think that space considerations also led Europe more toward the FLs since they could be made smaller and yet do more laundry than a top loader? Tom

MESSAGE: Is it common in your part of the country to leave appliances such as refrigerators and washers and dryers in a house you've sold? I had a client that was floored when she moved here, bought a house and didn't get a refrigerator. Most people take all their appliances, except for built-ins, when they move out. Ellen never gave any thought to the fridge until they got the keys and found an empty spot in the kitchen!

MESSAGE: Greg, yes and no. A lot of times, yes, it goes into the contract that they convey. That was not important to me and I even tried to make the sellers take the Kenmore gas range, OTS microwave and DW, but they left them, so I sold them. If the property has been rental, the stuff stays since the landlord put it there and often times after the renters move, everything is replaced when the place is spruced up to have nicer appliances in the house for selling, although the bol laundry appliances are fairly typical. A lot of times, people call John and say that they just need something that works before the house goes to settlement. Sometimes private parties take the refrigerator when moving, but if they are moving to a place that has a nicer one, they leave theirs. With so much built in now, the refrigerator is about the only appliance that does or does not convey and if it looks built in, it stays also. TT

MESSAGE: I've been looking at houses as a "hobby" for a number of reasons over the years and rarely see refrigerators unless they are of the built-in variety. I've seen some estate houses where the washer and dryer were left and have been offered a number of sets that were left behind in a friend's rentals. Funny how things that are common in some areas aren't in others. Of all the appliances in my house, the BOL Hotpoint fridge is one that I'd pay to leave! My parents called this weekend and told me to be on the lookout for a good deal on a new fridge as their 15 y.o. Amana top mount has a bad ice maker. I told them it only needs a new solenoid valve, but they don't want to move it back here. I'm always on the lookout for a pastel (or charcoal) bottom freezer unit, so they may end up with the Hotpoint yet!

Actually they took more space, because they didn't only needed space on top (the soapdispensers were all on top) but also at the front for opening the door. My mother's Bosch, that she had from 1966 until 1976 was almost as wide as an american toploader. I agree with you that spinning between rinses leads to a much better rinse result.
I don't think there was ever a Frigidaire built in Germany. Is there a tag on the machine that actually says "Made in Germany"? Do you have a picture of that machine? There are European Frigidaires, but they are made in Italy. Louis

I have been pricing the Frigidaire/Kenmore front loaders at the Sears outlet for a while now and had just about decided to get one when this beautiful machine comes along! I believe someone commented on the sales people at Sears 'keeping tally' on how many customers inquire about them...I second that thought. I was in MSP a few days ago and asked about this machiine. The sales person was very interested how I knew about this machine. Same thing happened over the weekend at my local store here in Michigan. A little off the subject but there was a marketing guy from the laundry division of Whirlpool on one of my flights out of Kalamazoo a few months back and he hinted at 'a few' new products coming out over the next several months. The only one he would confirm was the Whirlpool Calypso version. He did say Whirlpool was looking into other areas of laundry cleaning. When I pressed him for further information he would just say it was something new to be used to 'freshen' fabrics. An at home dry cleaning machine perhaps? With all the new government regulations that must be phased in over the next several years, no telling what the manufactuers have coming out.

MESSAGE: Philippe, the other night we saw an old WH FL with the cast iron weights. It even still had good bearings. John said that the cast iron weight machines did not have the snubber problems that the concrete weight machines had; they were much more stable. I have one of them in my basement that does not really need much to restore it, but I dream of being able to modify the timer to get a spin between the deep rinses. I know what you mean about when new people moved in and checking out the appliances. When I delivered papers back in Georgia, many of the houses either had the washer in the kitchen or in a utility room off the carport. When I would collect, I would often get glimpses of the appliances, expecially since the kitchen door often opened onto the carport. After I had been on the route a while, some people would invite me in while they got the money or wrote the check. There were even customers who would invite me in to show me a new stove or washer, but I don't remember what led up to it except that I was an appliance obsessed kid. There were the Saturday mornings when I was collecting when a utility room door would be left open and I would catch a glimpse of a washer or dryer that had not been seen before. It almost made delivering papers worthwhile. Driving around in Florida neighborhoods, I check out the laundry appliances when the garage doors are open. Tom

I bought a refrigerator at sears.com, and before it was delivered found a cheaper one at the store. I tried to cancel the order with the first salesperson, but she would have none of it. I finally found a commission-driven guy to do it, but it took him 40 minutes on the phone with three different offices to get the first order cancelled, my card credited and the new order approved. I felt like some bad credit bum ;-)
The upside is that my new Kenmore is so quiet and so much cheaper to run than my 1982 Hotpoint. Even the ice maker is quiet.
The downside is that the coolest bells and whistles seem to be saved for the most massive refrigerators. Even my fairly modest sized one still looks like a giant in my kitchen, so I couldn't get one of units with all the really fun stuff. Manufactuers need to realize that not all of us have huge kitchens. I would gladly have paid a little extra for a small fridge that had all the stuff I wanted.

MESSAGE: Your Majesty, we had a wonderful time indeed, thank you very much! We quite like the classic car as well and as a matter of fact, a number of the other members are also classic car enthusiasts. Did you notice the vintage AEG cleaner? It was well worth the trip, even if we did miss a couple of treasures that Robert depicted from the sales over the weekend.
In addition to the other festivities, we saw for the first time in person the Miele cleaners, which were quite impressive. With the exception of an older American Electrolux or Hoover Constellation, it is probably the quietest machine we've ever encountered, and quite powerful. The cost is US $1,120 on closeout (new model is close to US $1,500), but were we to find one at reduced cost it would be fun to have one. We also saw the British "Dyson", which was an interesting machine to see but we did not find it particularly impressive on a personal level.
Our friends from Arizona visited one of the members in Seattle just prior to our convention, and this home was equipped with a Miele washer/dryer set, which they found most impressive.

Yes, we did notice the AEG cleaner. We always smile a little when we see the name. There are not only Vampyrs but also Vampyrettes which are the handhelds. We bought our TOL Miele vacuum about 6 years ago for around $199.- It's a very De Luxe model with electronic suction control that you can put on automatic.

MESSAGE: Hi John
I was in awe of a 3.7 drum in the Whirlmore FL too....but if you read the fine print...under the dryer picture, the *** section...it says " *** Equivalent to a top loading agitator washer with a 3.7 cubic foot tub."
So you could say a Frigmore's 2.7 drum is equivalent to an agitator washer's 3.2 tub. But what is the actual size of the Whirlmore's drum? The brochure doesn't say. This seems like misleading advertising to me.
The Whirlmore is a very cool machine, however. I'd love to do a few loads in one. The styling is a little over the top for me...I personally prefer the design simplicity of the Frigmore. But I'm glad to see Whirlpool get on the front-loader wagon.

SUBJECT: RE: Whirlmore brochure--washer (Jetcone and Golittlesport.....)
MESSAGE: That makes three of us. While we had the Bendixes and the Westinghouses in the 1950's and 1960's..... and just the Westinghouses in the 1970's through the mid 1990's, it's refreshing to see that other (American) manufacturers has decided to get in on the front loading washer frenzy (Maytag, with their Neptune models, and then Frigidaire (who has came up with a design that everyone loves)..... and now, Whirlpool is joining in as well....... Welcome home, Whirlpool....).
But when you see a front loading washer that has a wash drum that has about 3.7 cu. ft. of space right inside of it, that's going to be enough to raise the eyebrows of a lot of folks, including THIS "died in the woods" Kenmore fan. The Frigidaire has a 2.7 cu. ft. drum, and it can hold a BIG washload. The Maytag Neptune has a 3.1 cu. ft. wash drum.... so I cannot EVEN begin to imagine what size washload this thing can hold. But now, the new Kenmore Elite front loader has a 3.7 cu. ft. drum. When I downloaded the specs and saw that, all I could say is WOW (!!!!!!!!). That has to be as big as some of the Milnors that I see at one of my local laundromats.
Golittlesport:
I saw the machines also, and I happen to be in love with the design (forgive me for sounding a little biased..... I'm a Kenmore fan you know (:-)) of them. It's a high-end design, make no mistake about it. But I wouldn't say that it's over the top, and all of that. In fact, I love that design so much, I am going to update my profile and make it and addition right along with all of my other dream machines (I listed both, vintage and modern machines in my profile..... because I feel that both generations of washers have something to offer THIS collector if he (meaning ME) ever wishes to start a collection) on my dream list.
Jetcone:
That makes two of us. I would like to do a few loads in that BIG critter my damn self.

SUBJECT: RE: Whirlmore brochure--washer (3.7 drum size possible )
MESSAGE: Ya know Rich---- I just did the math. Its not out of reason if they HAVE come up with some sort of new dampening system.Look>
volume in cu. in.=(h)x(pi)x(radius)x(radius).
So for 3.7 cu ft drum we get 6396 cu inches for the drum. [1728 cu in per cu foot]
Now for a drum depth of 25 inches--which is alittle too deep for a 31 inch cabinet but lets take it as an upper limit
SO for a drum of 25 inches deep we would need a diameter of 18 inches- very typical.
Now for a drum of 20 inches deep let that be the lower limit we would see a drum diameter of 20 inches. A square cylinder -Like a box.
Now a 20 inch wide drum is about the limit in 29 inch wide washer. [Because as we all know from experince an unbalanced load will throw a drum 4 inches either side at critical speed]
So if they have come up with some kind of hot new suspension system it might just be possible to make a drum somewhere between those two limits and we will all see a 3.7 cu ft drum in this thing!
Lets see how good the engineers at Whirlpool really are!!!!

I can see the reasoning in wanting to educate the public that a front loader can hold more than a agitator machine with the same size tub. But that brochure says in huge letters 3.7 cubic foot tub with an asteric after it and the asteric says the tub is EQUIVALENT to a 3.7 tub with an agitator. It makes me just wonder what size the tub is in reality.

For a T/loader to handle 3.7 cu ft of clothes the tub would have to be bigger than 3.7 BECAUSE of that agitator being there. SO if you took the surgilator out then the T/L would hold more than 3.7 cu ft.
I think your train of thought will prove out in the end but if the engineers are on top of their game then the ad guys may be the one that have the phrases backwards.
If you look again you will see something mentioned about 20 lbs loads in the fine print. Now I have not seen 20 # loads mentioned since the Norge F/L 1950 and the top loader Norge.

A pool?? Maybe the next convention should be in FL? ;-) Greg

SUBJECT: RE: Whirlmore brochure--washer (3.7 drum size possible )
MESSAGE: The coin-op SQ 25# machine has a 3.76 cubic foot drum. That machine is 26" wide - no problem there - but 34" deep and 45" tall. Now that's a bolt down machine, no room in the cabinet for suspension or dampening. If this Whirlmore wants to claim that as true capacity, then this machine is a monster and won't fit in the typical home laundry room!
I think the disclaimer on the slick says that it's equivalent of a 3.7 cubic foot capacity top loader. So terribly misleading!

MESSAGE: Jon,
I don't think there is a manufacturer who would give a smaller figure for the drumsize than it really is. I guess you should count around .3 to .5 cubic feet for the agitator. So I think the drumsize is somewhere between 3.2 and 3.4 cubic feet.
BTW, I got a brochure of an Admiral AW22 toploader and that says that it can hold 22 lbs of laundry.

MESSAGE: Hi guys
this new Whirlpool seems to be causing a good debate, does any of the literature state the dry weight of washing i.e. 7KG
Quite a few British and European manufacturers have just introduced the largest 7KG drum machines, and of these the drum size does vary between different machines. The biggest drum of all 7kg machines I have seen is the Dyson, very impressive, and the cabinet is 24inches square, but literature hear doesnt seem to state the cubic capacity of the drum.
So are we looking at this machine being around 9/10kg or am I still crap at maths, do tell????
Cheers, Mike

MESSAGE: Mike,
I think you might be right. 20lbs is around 9 kilogrammes. But when you convert the 3.4 cubic feet to litres, that would give around 96 litres. According to European standards there would be space for around 10 kilogrammes of laundry. 3.2 lbs gives around 90 litres.

SUBJECT: New Frigidaire pair in my future
MESSAGE: I was listening to my voice mail at work this afternoon and I had a message from a used appliance place in Augusta. The guy said he had a Frigidaire washer. I called and asked if it was one that the agitator went up and down and he said yes. He waited for me until I could get there and it was indeed a 1-18.
It was one with a florescent light in the control panel. I checked it out. Htere wasn't even a knick in hte agitator; no rust and the bed of nails filter looked as if lint had never passed through it! As I was examining the washer, he said would you be interested in the dryer? He had the matching dryer in the back of his shop. PeterH, I looks like the one you have. Can't remember all the details but I do remember there was some kind of red indicator light on the control panel. I made him an offer on the pair and he counter offered. I still haven't sealed the deal because I want to trde him those two newer dryers I have. Perhaps I can get him to look at hte kenmore 900, too. He said he had the dispenser I needed.
It's going to be so hard to work tomorrow. I want to get my hands on the pair.
By the way, the washer model is: WIS. The dryer is model: DCIT. They are coppertone and the lid does not have a window.

MESSAGE: i thought that cubic feet would be a much more accurate measurement of washing capacity than kg. it seems that you cant claim an unrealistic size if you go by measurement, rather than a kg load size claim. I found that as new models are realeased in Australia, the claimed load capacity in KGs are increased, but the tub stays the same size. For Simpsons lated range, the same size tub claims 6.5 KG, 7.5 KG and 8KG.
The Same goes for Samsung with a model just released that claims 9.5KG. I remember a Choice test that showed a Norge washer that claimed a 9KG capacity. They took a photo of the machine with nine kilos inside it and they couldnt close the lid!!!
The higher the claimed load capacity, the better an energy rating it recieves. people are also stupid enought to by a model that says its bigger over the other one too.

SUBJECT: RE: Whirlmore brochure--washer (3.7 drum size possible )
MESSAGE: The drum does not have to swing at all. In my Creda, as the machine drains, the speed of the cylinder picks up gradually and the clothes are held to the side. As the speed gradually increases, the machine can detect an unbalance situation at a very low speed and halts the progression of the cycle into spin. The cylinder returns to a tumble to reposition the load and makes another attempt. It was quite interesting to watch the first time. If a poor Creda can use a system like this, I am sure that people making a better quality machine can come up with something to prevent an unbalanced load from causing too much sideways motion. Tom

SUBJECT: RE: VCCC Convention (WH combo)
MESSAGE: Tom, the famous heater box rust out in WH combos. I heard about those from service men for years. I think it had to be a worse combo than the GE which at least did not rust itself to pieces. Poor design and such cheapness on WH's part in their refusal to use one square inch of porcelain that was not visible doomed those machines. The only one we have seen in the last decade was some sort of monument to rust from the inside out.
You were lucky to be able to bring an appliance home. When I hauled home a BIG 33" WP combo in 68, I thought my family was going to have a cow. My brother and mother could haul in all the antique furniture crap that they could find, but I could not have an old appliance, although I probably had the joy of using more new ones than anyone would believe. I must admit that they did make some real finds and I am going to enjoy the way the stuff has appreciated when it becomes mine and is auctioned off. Tom

MESSAGE: Ah yes, the small tablecloth and 4 napkins, always in a white load with the one double bed sheet and the two shirts. I wash the light colored shirts together in one load and the bedding in another unless I have very few shirts and wash them with the sheets in the KA. I cannot imagine having sheets for one bed in two separate loads. I knew one family with a standard capacity WP and all the sheets and pillow cases for three beds were washed in one overload I think clothes dryers sort of started the laundering of similar weight fabrics together so that the load would dry evenly. I learned early on that sheets and towels don't make for balanced loads in an agitator top loader because the agitator sorts them and they wind up on opposite sides of the tub. May Jean Shaw rest in balanced peace with her load containing no more than two large pieces and the remainder made up of smaller items. Tom
