MESSAGE: Well Friday the 13th has always been a lucky day for me fortunately. On the side of the road I found a Norge time line dryer free (not sure of the year), but in very good condition, could definately use repainting but the controls look good. I have no idea if it works or not. Secondly I stopped in at an appliance dealer whom I know a little more personally and he sent me to a friend of his who gave me a 1959 Whirlpool Washer, a Kemore? wringer washer (year?), and a 1945 GE frig. All in excellent condition. So once again I will rent a cargo van and pick them up next SAT. I will get pics and more details ASAP. I am so excited! YAY! Have a nice weekend everyone!!

SUBJECT: Classic Dreaming
MESSAGE: I had the most wonderful dream last night. I don't know why, but I dreamed about an old house I used to rent in Berkeley. Somehow I wound up living there again, but this time the former owner had populated the basement with a wide variety of vintage appliances. But not your usual fare. For example, there was a combination vintage refrigerator/clothes washer! This had a wash action that incorporated plastic briquettes (kind of like those fake plastic ice cubes, but sized and shaped like charcoal)! LOL! There was even an old Frigidaire washer, but since this was a dream it didn't have a pulsator, it was more like a *gasp* Calypso wash action. Go figure ;-) There were many other white enameled vintage appliances in this basement, but their exact description now eludes me.
Naturally, I awoke feeling a loss at having to leave this fantasy world, but perhaps it was some sort of compensation for having missed two classic appliance conventions in a row.

The most difficult part of the restore was the tranny rebuild. It had frozen up because of sitting with alot of water inside. Fortunately, some parts were still available through Larry at Modern and Robert actually had the hub and bottom seals it needed. A big thanks to him, or this tranny would have never come back to life.

SUBJECT: RE: 1951 GE (wiring the pump)
MESSAGE: Thanks Robert, you were a huge help and inspiration for me !!
What I did with the pump was hook up the white neutral wire to the incoming neutral. Then, I carefully exposed a bit of each wire leading to the motor by peeling back some of the rubber insulating covers that protect the connectors. I took the black wire from the pump, set the machine to spin, then touched each wire to see if it energized the pump. Both the red and blue wires ran the pump (the other 2 wires are simply neutral and ground). Now, after bypassing the pressure switch, I tested it on agitate which reverses the motor. Sure enough, touching the blue wire ran the pump but touching the red wire did not. Yay, we found the wire we needed ! I tapped into this line, made sure everything was insulated correctly, and voila the pump only comes on during the spin.

As for the timer, the timer motor has died. This is the most common problem in vintage washing machines. You can get a rebuilt timer for the machine at Midwest Timer Service in Benton Harbor Michigan. As for the water valve you might have to replace it with a generic one, but check with Midwest Timer Service because they used to sell rebuilt water valves too. I don't have their phone number at home, but I do have it at work which I can get on monday for you.

This is due to the 2 pulley system they used and the fact that the spin pulley has a smaller diameter than ones that were produced later.

I have a Bendix (thats what the tag says) Purchased it about 4 years ago for my parents who moved into a coop in Brooklyn and really couldn't have a washer. I removed their dishwasher (that they really didn't use) and put in this washer/dryer combo that requires no venting it has a condenser. My mom passed away almost 3 years ago and my dad sold the coop and moved in with my sister and I became the owner of another washer. I really haven't used it much because it holds only about 8-9 lbs. but it does work great. Just have to get used to the dry cycle and the clothes comming out a little steamy.
Get back to me when you can and lets chat.

If a dishwasher tub came with the machine when my parents purchased it, I never saw it. First, my mom would connect water hose to the kitchen sink. The drain hose was always at the edge of the kitchen sink. By turning on the kitchen faucet, you regulated the temperature of the water going into the machine. After the tub began to fill, my mom would throw in some Tide powder and turn on the agitator to mix it up for a moment. Then the agitator was turned off and the clothes were then placed inside the tub as the water was filling up the tub. Then the water was turned off and the crank was turned to "agitate". After 10 or 15 minutes, my mom would turn the crank to off, then to spin. After a few minutes, the crank was turned to off and the faucet turned on so that the rinse water could enter the tub. When the tub was full of water, the crank was turned to agitate but the water was kept on and running into the tub for an overflow rinse. Then the water was turned off and the crank turned again to spin for 5 minutes or so, and the load was done.

MESSAGE: Very fun Ad! Brent that Blackstone Automatic is Model 150. It was brand new in 1950 and the dryer is the match to the dryer you saw at the museum. Actually I found that drier in an alley in St. Paul and it eventually made its way to Washington. Its fun to play musical appliances!
The First Blackstone automatic was the Model #50, it was test marketed in '41 before the war, after the war the model #50A came out which was very similar to the Model #50. In 1950 they introduced the Model #150. Then in 53 came the Model #250 and in 1955 came the Model #350, the model that you saw at the museum.

In my ongoing effort to have the perfect flair, I am now trying to find out information about the rotisserie attchment. The owner's manual is frustratingly vague about this - it says it's available "at extra charge for installation" (duh) Does anyone out there know about the rotisserie, and how it worked? did it have to be hard wired?, or was it an add-on?
Thanks!

I think the model you're talking about was made in the late 60s and early 70s. Does a great job, but I think it uses about 15 gallons per cycle, whereas today's machines typically use 6-8.
Great for your vintage pad though! :)

MESSAGE: This thing, if I were to use the "daily" setting, would use billions of gallons of water. But I prefer to use the "party" setting, as it uses 1/3 of the water and still gets everything clean. Plus, it allows me to say that everyday at my house is a party ;-)
While it technically does not fit into my Eve of the Kennedy Assassination decor, it LOOKS like something out of 1962, so I think I'll let it slide.
If the dryer heater drives me to the poor house, I'll just figure a way to unhook it and go with the fan.

SUBJECT: Jimmy Visits Omaha
MESSAGE: Jimmy (filterflo) came to Omaha Thursday evening to pick up his machines from our South Dakota farm trip back in May and brought some fun stuff he found for Don (Jetaction) and I in Ohio. We had a busy and fun filled weekend which started with unloading a 1964 Kenmore Visi-Matic wringer washer. We had to free the motor switch and then started washing. What fun that wringer is, I have never used one before so it was quite and experience. I don't think I will be doing all my washing with this machine, but it is great for washing really dirty and hard to handle items as the tub is absolutely huge and holds a ton of washing. In trade for a Kelvinator washer I found in Iowa, Jimmy brought me a wonderful Frigidaire WV-65 he found in a trash pile while driving down the street back home. He litterally took it out of the pick-up guy's hands and rescued it from the krusher. Since he already has a 55 set of his own, he brought it to trade for something he's wanted for a long time - the Kelvinator washer. Jimmy spent most of Friday working on his 56 Philco washer and dryer set and was able to get them both running - I came home from work Friday to find the 56 Philco washer agitating with water even! There's still a long way to go, but at least it does run! Saturday, we hit the estate sales and actually were lucky to find a few things we were excited about. I found two Oster "beehive" blenders that I combined into one good one and a few other miscellaneous things. Jimmy runs estate sales back home and was shell-shocked at the prices here. Saturday night we had dinner and a wash-in with a few of my friends. Sunday we headed for the Early, Iowa store where I'd found my 55 Imperial Filtrator and the Kelvinator washers. The store owner had done a little cleaning of the warehouse and we were able to get the Kelvinators we wanted and Jimmy also got a Maytag A3MP washer to match his Maytag condenser dryer back home. We had such a wonderful time and lots of laughs while working on machines and moving what seemed an endless stream of washers and dryers. Jimmy has been working on vintage cars and trucks for years so I also picked up a few good restoration tips to use on washers and learned a lot. We spent lots of time in the garage working and had beautiful weather every day - what a great appliance weekend!! Thank you again Jimmy for everything and the great time - it was a pleasure having you here and I hope we can get together soon in Ohio!
Hope everyone's weekend was great - it sounds like there were some good finds! Here are some pictures, enjoy!!

SUBJECT: Imperial 70 Washer
MESSAGE: I bought a Whirlpool Imperial 70 Washer in 1986. That was the best washer I ever owned. The Super Surgilator(tm) agitator was great with big loads (especially with the Superwash cycle) and it was great with "dry clean only" because of the design of the bottom of the agitator gently rocked clothes on the Knit Gentle cycle. No wrinkling, my clothes lasted forever.
The machine would have too. But someone put a large sleeping bag in the washer, stripped the agitator shaft and we couldn't get the stripped plastic out of the splines on the shaft.
(Sorry for the run on sentences but I get emotional over that)
In any event I have a 97 kenmore that does an alright wash but it eats everything. Can't do delicates in it (even though it is two speeds). The high speed wash causes the lights in the house to pulsate too!
What I would do if I could find that Imperial 70 washer again.
I would have put a new shaft had I known...

The '66 Philco/Ford washer was the last design of the "Blades of Water" so when he gets that up and washing it will be interesting to see how it compares with the earlier versions. SUBJECT: RE: Preway 180 Gas Dishwasher (Did NORGE ever sell this version with NORGE on front instead of Preway?)
MESSAGE: Hello all,
The reason that I am asking this is because one of my childhood friends had a dishwasher that sounds just like this Preway. The difference is that it had NORGE on the front in big letters. I remember it loaded the glasses kinda sideways, and you had to get them in just right of they would fall on the sides. It had spray arms on the left and right. I also remember that it was gas water heating for the wash and like 2 of the rinses. I waited to post this because I wanted to get in touch with him and ask. And he confirmed that yes it was a gas dishwasher as I remembered. He said that his dad replaced it in the early 80's because the burner rusted out, and the tub was leaking.
Am I dreaming? I remember that this thing was loud! They would run it about 3 times a day because there was 6 kids. I would go over after each meal and "help" them load the dishwasher, and ask them if I could go ahead and run it. That seems to be so funny now thinking back. I am sure that they thought this is great that this kid comes over and helps with the chores. I would say that I would do it so that my friend could get "his" chores done, and come out and play. I would help several people in my neighborhood do "chores" so that I could use either washers or dryers or etc... I can remember my mom getting really mad because one of the mothers told her that I always help her around the house. I did not understand why she was so upset, since I would also do my chores around our house.

SUBJECT: RE: There's more in Iowa to be had! (1955 Set. Did I understand your story correctly?)
MESSAGE: Brett, Yes I got the washer out of the trash in Barberton Ohio. ITs a VERY interesting story: I moved to a new house in April, new location, that Im not very familiar with yet. I had to make a run to the bank, so I jumped in my 1957 Rambler. I got lost on the way, and took a couple of wrong turns, and low and behold in the trash, at 9am, was a 1955 UNIMATIC! I flipped. But there is no way it would fit in my Rambler. I stopped and went up to the house and knocked, but no one answered. So, with the wheels turning in my head, I jumped back in the Rambler and sped home, about 10 min away, grabbed my appliance dolly and thru it in my van and raced back. Just as I was rounding the corner to the house, the trash truck was there and the guys had their hands on the washer, getting ready to pick it up and throw it in the truck!!!!! I started honking the horn and waving my hands (they really thought I was nuts) and got their attention.......and ran out of the van and told them I wanted the washer. They, or course were more than happy not to have to pick it up. So.......just as all this was happening the owner of the house came out....and I thought, OH OH, shes going to give me a hard time......BUT intstead, she was glad I was taking it. It saved her $15.00 pick up fee from the city. She went in and got her son, and he helped me load it.
I was on cloud nine to have gotten it and now you have.......The Rest Of the Story!!! Ha
PS Greg will give it a good home, and its now part of a matched set (you know how I love those sets), in Omaha.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Always loved the Bendix. It was on par with growing up with TV. Loved when it oversuds it looked like a volcano erupting. Got many smacks from my mom because I added additional soap (Duz) when no one was looking to bring the suds out of the soap chute and the little door would fly open.
Again thanks for the welcome.

SUBJECT: I'm new
MESSAGE: hey guys. i can'tell u how thrilled and somewhat surprised i am to find this wonderful site. i thought i was about the only guy who was into vintage appliances. my favs are top & front loading automatic washers from latw 40's to early 60's. i also enjoy some window unit air conditoners from the same period.
i formerly had a 1955 GE filter-flo and a 1962 Lady Kenmore. I releuctantly parted with both a few years ago during a move because if no storage space. The GE had a transmission problem (no longer would spin). The Kenmore I passed on to a friend who is still enjoying it. It's fully operational. My dream is to acquire the space to begin a serious collection. but in the meantime it's nice to have discovered this site to read about the member's collections. And i LOVE the photos of everyone's machines. Please keep them coming. My earliest washer memory is of my mom's ABC-O-Matic. I also vividly recall an Aunt's Frigidaie (I think it was a 56 with the all-grey pulsator), and my next-door-neighbor's 1949 Maytag automatic with the red agitator and float. My favorites have always been the kenmore's from the 50's because of their multi-colored control dials and the famous wash-in-wear cycle with the cool-down function.
Thanks for having me!

SUBJECT: GE filter flo
MESSAGE: I used to have a 1955 GE filter-flo that once belonged to my great aunt. It had a 10 pound capacity black tub (with white specs) and black three-finned straight vane agitator (activator as it was officially called) with an aqua colored top where the filter pan fit over. The control dial illuminated. Two cycles (normal and "short"). The dial had the matching aqua background with black letters for the normal cycle and red for the short cycle. The rubber trim surrounding the filter-flo spout was also aqua as was the trim on the back panel. There were three white controls on the left hand side of the panel. One for wash temp, one for rinse and one for water lever. This had no official setting. Once the washer reached the desired water lever you pushed down on the control and it started the agitator (unless of course you were doing a full load).
My question is, just before I finally donated the machine away, it no longer would go into a spin yet it still washed perfectly. The GE repairman said the transmission was bad and that GE no longer made parts since by this time the machine was at least 30 years old and GE had compeltely redesigned their drive trains by then. Could is have been fixed and what specifically within the transmission (clutch perhaps?) caused it to be too weak to spin?
One curious thing about the machine's operation. During the first spin on both the normal & short cycles the machine would cut off for a moment then resume spiinig again. What year did GE discontinue this and replace this "spin pause" with the cold water spray?
How I regret giving that machine away.

SUBJECT: RE: GE filter flo (Suds-Kill Cycle)
MESSAGE: Well Les, it depends on what was wrong exactly with the GE tranny or clutch itself. Most likely the Clutch spring in the bottom of the tranny had broken. That can certainly be fixed, but you would have to find the right part, which now that you know us would have been a heck of a lot easier.
As for the pause during spin, this was called the "Suds-Kill Cycle". It was used on GE's until 1961 when they came out with the new perforated spin-basket design. My early 1951 GE as well as Eddy's GE does a suds kill and a spray rinse, by the mid 50's they stopped the spray rinse.

MESSAGE: Does anyone know if there are any links to photos of control dials and agitators for Kenmore top loaders from the 50's? This was the period I loved for Kenmores when the various cycles on the timer controls were usually painted different colors (ie yellow for normal, blue or orange-depending on the model- for wash n wear, aqua for delicate). Just curious. I remember four models in particular. One had letters to represent the different cycles ("A" was normal cycle with hot was, "B" warm wash... "C" was pre-wash cycle... "D" was warm wash perm press cycle, "E" cold... "F" was for the delicate cycle-all different colors of course). Thanks. Les

MESSAGE: Jimmy and I were going crazy trying to figure that out this weekend. My 1960 panel also has that designation. M + C is the wash-n-wear cycle and has a long, cold overflow period at the end of the wash cycle. It really does cool the water down quite a bit, starting with warm. There is no thermostatic valve in these machines that would give a "medium" temperature so it is still a mystery. Does anyone have a manual for Kelvinator washers from the 60's - SteveD??

MESSAGE: The large button (black in later machines) was the water level switch - when the cap of the agitator rose with the water level in the tub, it would push that switch and the agitation would begin. That is why it would stop and begin filling again when the lid was lifted during agitation. The flapper is the trip level for the off-balance switch. When the tub was off balance in spin, the agitator would hit that level and stop the machine.

SUBJECT: Building A Better Applianceville
MESSAGE: Back on May 21, 2001 when Applianceville was a mere one day old, Glenn (Dadoes) asked the following question in Post #92: "What is the possibility for having a "preview post" function, for purposes of proofreading and editing before final submission?"
Well it only took a year and a half before I got around to writing it, but now, in my first major revision to Applianceville, I have added a Preview System to our Post A New Message and Reply To This Post functions. Check it out, go ahead a press Post A New Message or Reply To This Post (from inside a message) and play with the new system. After you type your initial message press when done PUSH to Preview and check out how your message might look. Make some changes, press preview again, and when you are satisfied press Post this to Applianceville.
The nice thing about this is you can test your links before you post them as well as see the results of any HTML code you might have added to your post!
Now I did quite a bit of testing, but I can't catch everything and just like when we first went live with Applianceville there are going to be some bugs. If you do find a bug please post a message about it so I can research it and fix it.
I also fixed an annoying thing about adding a link to your post. Now you do not have to type in http:// in your link anymore, the system will automatically insert this if its not already there. Some users like to just type in www.theirlink.com and in the old system it wouldn't work without typing http://www.theirlink.com, but now it should.
Hopefully this wasn't too confusing. Let me know what you think of the instructions I've placed into the Preview System, if they are confusing or you think the wording should be changed to make it easier to use, please lets discuss.
Enjoy everyone!---Lots more changes to come this fall!

It seemed to do the trick on the Kelvinator parts. I put the boot back on, its much softer now and seemed to work fine. Pics to follow soon of its Splash Dance........

I was furious! It weighed about two tons! And my parents sold our 1952 Deering casment window unit for 50 dollars at a garage sale while I was away at school. I was heartbroken when I got home and it was gone. The compressor on that baby purred like a kitten.

SUBJECT: Frigidaire safety switch
MESSAGE: One distinct feature I remember about my Aunt's Frigidaire (I think it was a 56) was the safety switch which was placed on the back panel to the left of the main control timer. As long as the switch was NOT depressed the washer would run but if you opened the lid and let it rest against the back panel it would press the button and stop the machine. I've always thought this was the oddest safet switch ever. Of course I loved it because it made it easy to observe the washer in operation without having to press in a safety switch. All I had to do was hold the lid open to keep it from resting against the panel. Does anyone know what year Frigidaire first introduced this feature and how long it was used?

Too bad todays machines aren't that beautiful. I remember adding extra detergent to my moms bendix to get a over suds situation. Got in big trouble a couple of times, because my mom always poured a glass of water down the chute after the detergent to keep it clean. She knew if someone added extra. She was smart though. SUBJECT: Kelvinators Work !!
MESSAGE: Jimmy sent me some pictures of his Kelvinator washer tonight and I took some of mine after it was up and running so I posted them for everyone to see the new babies up and running.
This machine's cycle is a bit different than the 1960 one I restored from the farm. The rinse cycle starts agitation at about 1/2 to 3/4 full and continues to fill. The stationary overflow comes after this (makes more sense really, after the clothes have been circulated for a couple of minutes to float away the soap scum more thoroughly) and then comes the splash away rinse. The 1960 model did the overflow and splash away first, then agitation for 2 minutes, then agitated overflow. Just like Kelvinator, always changing something. Too bad they didn't make it.

That seemed to be the kiss of death for Hamilton, Gibson, Kelvinator and Westinghouse. I guess when you start giving these appliances away on game shows that is another danger sign. I never saw Frigidaires or old GE's on Let's Make A Deal!!
Another thing I noticed recently. While at a local appliance parts store, there were some WCI parts packaged in plastic with the various brand names on them (Gibson, Tappan, Kelvinator). But it also included Philco. I haven't seen a Philco anything since 1972. I didn't know WCI even acquired the Philco name, let alone produce anything with the Philco name!
Of course this is the same parts store that is selling a replacement "jet flow" bed of nails filter for $40.00...........

American Motors sold off the Kelvinator division to keep their auto plants running for a while longer, GM shed Frigidaire when the energy crunch took it's toll on the economy. I can't imagine how hard it must be today for a company like Staber to begin manufacturing a new product in an industry literally controlled by three giant manufacturers.
I too have noticed the Philco name on several parts from Electrolux, but have yet to see an appliance branded Philco.

MESSAGE: Hi Greg,
Ford Motor Co. bought out nearly bankrupt Philco (Philadelphia Battery Co.) in the early 60's, mainly to acquire Philco's defense contracts, therefore enabling Ford to enter the space program, as Ford Aerospace. Ford revitalized the company, with new washer and refrigerator designs, and also continued and expanded Philco-Ford electronics (color TV, radios) They made washers up to the very late 60's, and continued with TV's and refrigs till sometime into the 70's. Its a grey area as to why Ford and GM both dumped their appliance business. They certainly were profitable for them. Most likely, one of the reasons for their demise was anti-trust worries from the US govt, as the Co's were getting so big, they were worried that the govt would step in the break them into small divisions..........The oil problems of the 70's and GM's diminishing profits seemed to put a stop to all that talk.

SUBJECT: Unfortunate demise of GM Frigidaire appliances
MESSAGE: With regard to previous discussion on this matter.....here are some more ideas to consider. It's said that General Motors management in the late 1960's; began growing concerned that the Frigidaire appliance division was not contributing it's fair share. The United Auto Workers employment contract that covered the appliance factory workers, insured similar pay and benefits as the auto plants. The auto business generated much greater income. The story continues, that from that point GM began contemplating exiting the appliance business. Well, there is a Whirlpool twist to this. By the mid 1970's, a proposition was made to merge Frigidaire appliances with Whirlpool. For one reason or another (FTC issues etc.) the co-mingling never got off the ground. Eventually WCI came around and the rest is history.

SUBJECT: late 50s Kelvinator fridge free to good home (UK)
MESSAGE: Hello
I'm a PhD student doing research on fridges for a kind of cultural history of the domestic refrigerator - but more about that in a separate post.
For now, this is a quick call to see if anyone in/near London, UK, might be interested in a late 50s Kelvinator which will otherwise go for scrap. Though it's not currently working, it was in full working order up until about a month ago (with just a gasket replaced in 1973). It's around 6 cu ft, white, with a pale pink interior. The owner looked into donating it to the Science Museum collection and though they were quite interested in the end they weren't able to take it. She needs to get rid of it as soon as possible and has arranged for the local Council to dispose of it in the next few days unless anyone is able to take it off her hands. It was bought in 1959, as part of a discontinued line from, she thinks, a c1956 model.
Any interest, let me know ... quickly!
Thanks
Helen

MESSAGE: When I took sophomore economics in high school, WCI was one of my companies that chose to track through the school year. (I wonder why - Maytag and Sears were my other two choices!) This would have been probably 1980-81, shortly after the merger with Frigidaire. As I recall, WCI's earnings performance was quite good for the period I tracked them. I wish I'd saved the written report and documentation I'd gathered.
Since WCI did not aquire the Frigidaire design and production lines and only had to order new labels for their current line (which Whirlpool probably would have done also) they didn't have to absorb the cost of running additional factories. Mergers are extremely expensive and are an enormous drain on personnel to staff and manage the aquired company. With only a brand name aquisition, the costs would have been much lower and more readily profitable for a company like WCI.
I wonder what the actual terms of the sale were, it would be interesting to know what WCI paid for what they got.
Thanks for the history lesson Leslie!

SUBJECT: RE: Unfortunate demise of GM Frigidaire appliances (WCI )
MESSAGE: The biggest mistake WCI made when purchasing Frigidaire was that they didn't get the factories. All they realy purchaced was the name Frigidaire. For 2 years 1979 & 1980 they paid GM to make the products for them. The cost was just to high. If they had at least kept the washers and the refrigation end they would have done well with Frigidaire. Their mistake was trying to fool everyone and say the products were just as good. The actual change over was actually January 1981. After that Frigidaire stock fell drastically and their business went to Maytag and Whirlpool. After WCI realized they made a mistake they wanted GM to start making the products again and general motors had shutdown everything and wouldn't start it backup. WCI had all the patents and everything was all on paper. The cost would have been to outragous to start from scratch, plus WCI didn't have skill. (So that ended the real Frigidaire) - For a long time I thought they would bring the stuff back - but never happened.
Whirlpool probably would have done it differently to start with

Those Kenmores were the ones that was in the laundromat that my mom worked for way back in the 70s. I grew up with those machines and the Milnor front-loaders. Those machines are the reason I'm here today.

SUBJECT: RE: Kelvinators Work !! (Philco - FORD)
MESSAGE: Greg - If I am not mistaken, Ford owned Philco for a good few years - at least from the early 60's and probably before. However, the Ford part of name was not incorporated into the Philco logo until the last few years Philco appliances were sold. I know that Philco laundry completely disappeared around 1972, but am not sure about the other appliances. Probably around the mid 1970's since I recall a 1974 Consumer Reports that rated Philco refrigerators.......

MESSAGE: How did I know Spanky McFarland worked for Philco-Ford?
He came to Akron in the late 80's, and made a guest appearance/lecture at a film festival of the Little Rascals films. During his talk, he mentioned that the only stable job he ever had after leaving film work was for Philco-Ford when he lived in Texas. He was their sales rep for the whole state, and did that until they went out of business. From that point on, he made his living from doing lectures and guest appearances at film fests, and marketing his name with the Little Rascals. It was a wonderful evening, he died not long after that, and I was fortunate to have seen him in person, and also got his autograph. What a great guy he was.....and into Philcos too!

MESSAGE: Well, I have to say, that at times, when I do a small load on regular agitation (doesn't happen anymore these days) and hear the rapid splashing and the ka-thunk as it kicks into agitation, it reminds me of a GM Frigidaire and combine that with the Whirlpool sound. Even on full water level now, the fast strokes hitting the end of each stroke mechanically is reminiscent of the thumpa ...... That's what attracted me to this washer, the rollover was so reminiscent of a Frigidaire--who knew what lurked down at the base of the skirt though!!!

SUBJECT: Is this discrimination?
MESSAGE: I noticed that there are some problems with the videos on the web page. I especially noticed the requirement for Windows Media Player.
Sorry, but I do not use Windows. Nor will I ever. I am a Linux and OS-X user. It is my hope that the videos can be converted into a more open format, such as mov or mpg.
Not only would Windows users still be able to view the files, those files could also be viewed by the rest of us who use other (and we believe more superior) operating systems.
Thank you for your consideration.

SUBJECT: Philco Ford Demise
MESSAGE: I pretty much remember that too. I know I had a Philco Ford room A/C that lasted 29 years before it finally bit the dust. I should have repaired it since I think it was the capacitor that went on it. I bought it in 1971 and worked great. But I have a newspaper article when Ford sold Philco to WCI, and I will try to find it. But I do remember the small article stating that WCI will keep Philco a separate unit and will expand its lineup. But that never happened as we all can see. I will look for it and post it.

SUBJECT: Kenmore multi-cycles
MESSAGE: Can any of you Kenmore experts tell we what year Sears rolled out the first top loader with both a normal & delicate cycle and also when the wash n wear (later permanent press) cycle was introduced? I remember my friend's Mom had a Kenmore from mid 50's I think that had the normal cycle in yellow and the delicate in aqua. The lettering was stationary on the control panel and the pointer was on the rotating timer knob which was gold and quite small in diameter. The first model with wash n wear was very similar except it also had this third cycle in orange letters. In the center of the rotating timer knob were the words "2 speed". Also, instead of the word "spin" it said "Damp Dry" on normal and "D. Dry" on the delicate & wash n wear.

SUBJECT: RE: Is this discrimination?
MESSAGE: To be honest Tom the reason I use the WMV format is because the Windows Media Format takes up a whole lot less disk space than the MPEG, about a third to be exact. Server space is expensive and in order to have as many vidoes as possible I need to watch the file sizes.
If you are a MAC OS-X user, then simply go to the microsoft web site and download Windows Media Player for MAC and you can view these video files. They might even have a Linux version of the Windows Media Player, that I cannot say for sure.
I could code the files into Quick Time MOV files, but that format creates slightly larger files than WMV and all the windows users would need to download Quick Time, just like the MAC Users need to download Windows Media Player, and sorry but there are a lot more windows users than Mac Users using this site. In the reports I get, they should Windows Usage at 95% and Mac usage at about 5%, so WMV it is! Of course things can change quickly in the technology world, so who knows that next year will bring.

I found it quite strange to find those Kenmores in the laundryroom since the hotel was only 3 years old I believe. Do you know how old these washers and dryers could be? I loved the roll over from the Super Surgilator and although I only used warm water and a small amount of Tide things became really clean.
Are these dryers automatic or do they have cycles with preset times?
