SUBJECT: RE: great CONSTRUCTA washer
MESSAGE: Hi Filekar1, goood to hear from you again.

I have seen a slightly similar machine to this one here in Australia. It would have been a private import as it was labelled in German and had a European-style power plug. It was a Constructa washer-dryer. I don't think Constructa have ever been sold here.
At the time I used to work night shift, and if a hard-garbage collection was happening somewhere between work and home I would often cruise past the junk at between 1am and 3am looking for interesting machines. I tried to lift the Constructa into the back of my car, a station wagon, but it was exceptionally heavy and appeared too big anyway, and I didn't want to make a noise. I removed a few spare parts from it including the motor, which was a very unusual design, manufactured by Siemens. The motor had an integral 10-to-1 reduction gearbox and a centrifugal clutch. The motor was 2-speed. When the motor turned at low speed (1400rpm) the reduction gear was engaged, so that the pulley turned at 140 rpm. the drum pulley was almost three times the size, giving a drum speed of 50rpm, which is WASH cycle. When the fast speed of the motor is energized (2800rpm) the centrifugal clutch engages so that the gearbox is bypassed and output pulley speed is the same as motor speed, 2800 rpm. The belt/pulley sizes mean it spins at about 1000 rpm. This 20:1 ratio was very unusual for a machine with no electronic motor speed control, and must have given an impressive spin. (1000 rpm with a very large diameter drum, in a machine of 1970's (?) vintage.) I have seen early Asko-Asea washers with exactly the same Siemens motor/gearbox.

Filekar1 or Louis, what can you tell us about the history of Constructa washers? they look very heavy-duty, were they domestic or commercial use machines??
Thanks
Chris.

You did such a great job! I am so proud that that machine will be running for so much longer with your hard work!
Now, where did you get the new an improved parts? Did GE still have these parts? Or did you have someone manufacture them?
Also wondering what was the total running time from start to finish of washing and drying for such a load. That looked like a big load. And I love that water action!
You are very lucky and talented Jon! Good for you!
What is needing to be done with your other GE combo?
Also, Did GE make this version in a gas combo? Or was the Condenser the only version for drying. I am sure that you know.
Thanks for answering all of my questions.
So So Cool!

SUBJECT: RE: No Spivulators HERE!!! (Had to make the parts)
MESSAGE: Hi Brent, Cyclafabric & Terry & Louis:
The parts are no longer available even as NOS. So I had to improvise. I found that the Frigdaire 1-18 tub seal just about fit the GE bronze face seal currently on the Combo. I knew the part that held it the "Seal Hub" had to be made up from scratch since as you can see mine was disintegrated. It had to fit the back plate of the combo yet hold the slightly larger Frigidaire seal agianst the bronze face and NOT allow the clothes basket to hit the front wall of the outer tub. With some careful measuring I took the dimensions to my friend Jacob who is a machinest by trade. He cut the new Seal Hub out of solid aluminum. Then we had it anodized black to prevent corrosion. Once I knew it fit it was just a matter of cleaning out the years of scum and lint in the tub, lubing up everything and reassembly. I also added my own little improvement. I put in vibration isolators between the motor and the base plate. That machine generates alot of sound due to the shape of the baseplate and cavity under the drum.
Now this machine is very quite compared to the other white machine I got from Jeff this summer.
Also it runs through its cycle faster. The wash is 8-10 minutes and the whole cycle in the White Combo usually runs 2 -2 1/2 hours BUT in the restored combo it runs 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
I believe both heating elements are working in both combos but I think gettting the chunks of compacted lint out of the Avocado combo has really shortend the drying time for it.
Anybody have any thoughts on why the times might be so different?
Glad you liked the pic, if anybody has to restore another one like this I have the dimensions on file and you can take them to your local machine shop and get a hub made,I also stocked up on Frigidaire seals if anybody needs them.
Have a great weekend all!

MESSAGE: I got some more information about the Constructa brand from the German collector. Constructa was taken over by Siemens in 1967 but continued to manufacture the real boil wash machines (Kochautomat) until the mid 70's. So the machine on eBay is a machine that really boils the laundry if you choose that cycle. He also told me that Bauknecht (the manufacturer of the Hettie and the Duet) also made boiling machines in the past. That was new to me.

MESSAGE: Hi John

Glad to see another machine revived for another wash outing, what size load to it wash???

Is the dryer a condensor or vented??

From speaking to a lot of service engineers, the combo machines became more of a pain when the water levels where reduced for energy efficiency, with less water to splash about in the top of the drum the lint used to stick especially in the dimples and not too smooth areas around enamel etc....the later designed machines of UK and European models had SS drums and SS/metal outer drums with fancy rinse injectors to spray the surface of the drum and wash away the lint before it dried.

If the lint was allowed to build up it just acted like a sponge soaking up more moisture and taking longer to dry etc.Over a few years you then get much longer dry times..

GE called it "piece by piece" action - the six vaned, 26" (4 cubic foot) drum "gently flexes, dips and tumbles clothes" and reduces unecessary wear...

The lint buildup causes slightly longer drying times in a Filtrator too. Are the voltage ratings the same on both models? They also came in a 208v model which was sometimes preferred in apartment construction, etc. Just a thought...

Until 1967 Constructa was an independent manufacturer. Then they were taken over by Siemens. A "Kochautomat" is a Boiling Automatic. So the one on eBay was manufactured while Constructa was already taken over (1971) but still was a machine that did a real boil wash. these machines were very interesting because before the prewash cicle they had a cicle, known in italian "bagnatura".
this cicle was used to soak the laundry tor dissolve better the detergent in the next prewash cicle. MESSAGE: Greg,

Yes, these washers did a true 212 boil wash. I remember seeing the Constructa from our neighbours bubbling their whites. That machine had a timer and pushbuttons, for several cycles including temperature. I mean that the temperature was integrated in the cyclebuttons. There was no delicate boil wash available, just a regular cycle.

Boiling pasta in a Constructa is not a good idea I think, a Kochautomat sounds more like Bubble and Squeak to me.

SUBJECT: Bauknecht washing machines brochure 1964/65 including "Kochautomat"
MESSAGE: Name it coincidence, but today a Belgian guy read my ad on a dutch site about collecting washer brochures. He scanned this Bauknecht brochure and sent the scans to me. Much to my surprise the machines that did a real boil wash (212F) are in this brochure. I have never seen these washers for real, I guess Bauknecht wasn't very popular in the area where I lived.

The commercial machines look much like the Constructa machines from that time, there might have been a connection, but that's just a guess. The residential machines have the controls on the rear like my mother's Bosch from 1966 had. Some of the Bauknecht residential models were bolt down machines, I didn't know that in the 60's bolt down machines were still made.

MESSAGE: A very busy weekend, working 7 days/week again, but I did manage to have some neat finds this weekend. At our one and only sale, I found a couple of neat vacuum coffee pots, one of which is going to Tomturbo in D.C. (see pics) I saw them yesterday and went back today for them. The Sunbeam is a model "C" from 1933! I got a peek at the Flair range a friend has saved for me. It appears to be a 1960 40" model, but the control panel glass is broken, great for parts though. Tomorrow night I am going to look at a couple of washers and a dryer in a friend's rental house, upon description, it sounds like a Norge set (more harvest gold!) and another white washer "that is even older." We'll see...

Hope everyone's weekend was grand!

SUBJECT: RE: Bauknecht washing machines brochure 1964/65 including "Kochautomat" (Some technical information)
MESSAGE: Greg,

They were indeed the same size as other European machines from that time. This however was before the European standard size, the width of those machines was 5 centimetres (2 inches) more than modern European machines.

BTW, not all the models are bolt down machines and not all of them do a real boil wash. The models are:

WA481K: bolt down - 212 boil wash
WA501K: freestanding - 212 boil wash
WA581K: bolt down - 212 boil wash - bigger capacity and small load option
WA480: bolt down - no 212 boil wash
WA500: freestanding - no 212 boil wash

So the K stands probably for "Kochautomat".

All models can be connected to single phase 220 V, three phase 220V and three phase 380V except for the WA581K that doesn't connect to single phase 220V.

MESSAGE: Just as my birthday approached last week, I got a call from California Appliance Recycling Factory in Riverside, Ca. that they just got in a Frigidaire jetcone washer and dryer set in mint condition. I did the one hour drive there from Palm Springs and bought the set. They are to be delivered this week. I can't wait to do my first load in the jetcone. I do not know how to post pictures but will try. All that will be left to complete my small collection will be to find a Thor Automagic top loader spinner washer.

MESSAGE: It looks to me like an Avco design with the slanted drawer fronts. Avco owned Bendix and Crosley appliances and also made kitchen cabinets. I scanned a copy of a brochure that I have from 1954, probably a little earlier than the kitchen you linked to, you'll notice chrome pulls on the drawers in the ad that are missing on the pictured kitchen. Avco home appliances (Crosley & Bendix) were sold in 1956, but I don't know what happened to the cabinet division then. There is also a '54 Crosley washer and dryer ad in that same photo album.

MESSAGE: Hey guys, my parents had a kitchen full of these back in the mid to late 60's. I remember my mom could not wait to get rid of them! My dad and brother pulled them off of the walls and me and my mom scraped up the black & white checker patterned asphalt floor tiles. (Blasphemy!) Think I was 7 or 8 at the time. Anyway, they were known as Youngstown-American steel kitchens. The doors were very heavy and unfortunately the hinges would wear. As did the door closure hardware. The less used and in good shape cabinets were reused and relocated to the basement workbench area.

Friends of my parents had a GE kitchen cabinets in turquoise with Pink GE appliances put in their new home in 1960. Waaay cool. Only the dishwasher has been replaced. Whirlpool Corp., also had steel cabinets called "Wonder-life"....in the 50's & early 60's. You can catch a glimpse of them in several scenes of the Doris Day--Rock Hudson movie "Pillow Talk". They're in Doris' NY apt.

There were literally thousands of post WWII houses built in developments in the Buffalo NY area that had these Youngstown- American kitchens. Surely there are plenty still there. Most notable is community known as Green-Acres in Tonawanda......virtually every California ranch there had them. Fun memories....take care..

The Maytag dryer I saw was marked $10 and was $5 on Sunday, but it was more than likely "trapped" in the remodeled basement of the house. I didn't feel like messing with it for a dryer I really didn't want anyway. The Maytag Master washer (wringer) was there as well for $25 (12.50) I want a BIG capacity gas dryer with a hot burner to use out in the garage - like my GE in gas or that 68 Whirlpool on ebay a while back with the paneling on the door. MESSAGE: Hi Brent, thanks for the kind words. I found out a little of the history of the GE Combo and dishwaser: The ebay people I bought them from were very charming people. They purchased the house from the original owner, the house having been built in 1955. It was an original All Electric Gold Medallion Home with a complete GE kitchen in it, including the wall refrigerator. The refrigerator has been replaced by the time they bought the house, but all the rest of the kitchen was still intact. They said that this house had been the model house for the development, and that Ronald Reagan had actually been present for the open houses and showings. That makes senses logically, since he was the spokesman for GE during that time period. The items I got had the original owners manuals with them, but had not been used in a long time. The seals do look very dry, as is typical. The had the wall oven and pushbutton cooktop and offered them to me free if I wanted them, I did take the cooktop, but did not have room for the wall oven. Its still there if anyone wants it. I can put you in touch with the owner if need be......Im currently in LA until Sunday, and them am going to Orange Cty to visit Rich (GOLittleSport) from the club. Met Ross Roberts and Rich from Palm Springs last week and we had a nice dinner together. Driving back thru Phoenix to pick up the Frigidaire SkinnyMini that i bought there, then back on the road home for Ohio. Will be home about the middle of Feb.....Miss you all, and certainly enjoy the club and posting while Im far away from home........Jimmy

SUBJECT: RE: Bauknecht washing machines brochure 1964/65 including "Kochautomat" (Some technical information (Thanks for posting))
MESSAGE: Hi Brent,

I never saw those machines around when I was young and I never saw them later. I guess they never made it to this part of the country. Besides that I think that they weren't very popular, I guess they were pretty expensive. Also Constructa was leader in the boiling market. When I was young I knew at least three households that had one.

In the Netherlands almost all laundromats had Miele machines, I can't remember seeing other machines being used, but I'm sure there were others. Later Electrolux became popular and took over quite a part of the market. Laundromats disappeared almost in the eighties when almost everybody had it's own washer, but there are some new ones now. In this town with 170,000 people there are now 5 laundromats.

The controls were actually not that different from other machines from that time. Most of them had a timer, a temperature control and some sort of cycle selection. Miele had toggle switches for cycle selection, Bosch and Bauknecht had a third rotary control. Some TOL machines had a single knob like modern Mieles have.

MESSAGE: So many things have changed recently, Jimmy. It's almost impossible to avoid bidding against someone else in the club these days. Perhaps that was the original intention, but the club has grown so much in the past year and the supply of vintage appliances appears to be shrinking. So it seems that the natural end is something like this.

Another principle of the original club that seems to be only a memory was to try and avoid having washers selling for very high prices. At the time, the concern was that once used appliance dealers figured out that people wanted these washers, prices would skyrocket - creating a hugely inflated "market price". Yet, you will remember that when Robert (Unimatic) sold his turquoise Frigidaire some months ago, the bidding war on e-bay drove the price over $1,000. I am sure I still don't understand why it was OK for us to drive prices up ourselves on e-bay, but objected to a used appliance store charging an incredible price...

I am not sure if club members bidding against each other on e-bay is such a good idea either. It can lead to bad feelings especially when you have a few people with deep pockets that can and will outbid those of more modest means on any auction. In effect then, these are the people setting the pricing structure at a high level. But I am equally as unsure exactly what the right answer is either........

Funny how people remodel and rebuild never thinking that they will need to get something out or in at some point of their lives.
I bet that you will find an Americana gas GE soon. I just feel it. So, I guess that you are using your electric Americana as your BIG dryer? Has your opionion stayed the same about it?
And about that Whirpool Gas dryer that was on eBay... Didn't a club member get that one? I never heard anything about it.
You do have a gas dryer hooked up don't you?

SUBJECT: RE: Speaking of eBay (Trapped!)
MESSAGE: I looked around that basement and saw the sharp turns and steep steps going up and knew then I wouldn't be the owner of that dryer. I wasn't interested in that one much anyway as I already have the 54 Speed Queen dryer in gas hooked up, but it's a smaller capacity that can't handle big loads from the Maytag or GE very well.

I do like the GE dryer although it does have it's drawbacks. It is electric and therefore much less efficient than gas and then there is the lint/airflow issue that gets annoying. Consumer Reports didn't care for the huge door as you couldn't have a basket in front of the door and open or close it without moving the basket. I thought this was a little silly at first, but it turns out that it is a little annoying, especially since there is limited room where I have it installed - too much crap in my garage, I know, but still a valid complaint. I do love the huge opening and the capacity is wonderful and of course, it is beautiful - even in gold!

I'm not sure who ended up getting the WP on ebay - too far to ship a dryer

SUBJECT: More on American Kitchens
MESSAGE: Some days ago I posted a question about a kitchen. Well, I put my snowboots on and went to the shop that sells them. They gave me a copy of a brochure, I scanned only the frontpage since that was the only one they had copied in color. I also put some other pictures, that I eventually found, in my Yahoo album.

This kitchen was designed by Raymond Loewy (1893 - 1986), who was also the designer of the Greyhound bus, the Shell logo, the Lucky Strike package and also designed for Studebaker and NASA. This kitchen was introduced in the US in 1956 and in the Netherlands in 1959, where it was produced too. The Dutch manufacturer went broke in 1970. It looks very similar to the Crosley kitchen Greg posted a picture of(thanks again!), only this one doesn't have the handles on the drawers. So fat chance this kitchen was sold in the US by Crosley, but I haven't found anything about that. Confusing to me was the fact that this kitchen was named in the Netherlands different than in the US. Originally this kitchen was named "Look", but in the Netherlands they were sold under the name "American Kitchens".

Overhere in the Netherlands there are two dealers for them now that buy old kitchens and restore them. I have never seen them as a kid, but as the guy from the shop said:"How many houses do you see from the inside anyway?" (Not enough!) According to this guy there are enough left to keep them selling for a while.

MESSAGE: I had to laugh when I read the text that accompanied the Hotpoint ad in today's POD. It brags about the fact that the washer could "handle tiny 2-lb loads without special attachments". Hotpoint is a division of GE. The model's hair style, the 16-lb claimed capacity for the washer, the removable teflon coated oven panels, and design of the fridge, that are also part of the ad, suggests that Hotpoint ran this ad in the around the same time that GE was running ads that bragged about its "mini-basket" for very small loads. LOL! Talk about two divisions of the same company not knowing what each was doing when it came to advertising!

MESSAGE: Jon, I think the plan has potential, but I perceive it's fraught with wrinkles. Although, you might end up with the short end of the stick given it's more expensive to ship damp clothes than dry ones. And there's the issue of the combos. Do they classify as a washer or a dryer? Let's see, Robert has 2 combos, how many do you have? I can't remember, I think three is what I'm taking a stab at, but there may be one or two more that I am unaware of in your collection. There's also another issue that you might get short-changed with (now I'm just trying to be objective here and thinking of both sides here). You know I love you and Uni both dearly so I can say this without offense (and ahem, I have room to talk LOL) --It would still be more expensive for you. I mean, your laundry volume would probably still be more than the combination of Robert & Neal's together simply because neither you nor I are slight in any way. Yes, I've even thought about sending my voluminous amounts of laundry to Robert's, Steve's, Greg's, or your house (& flying to the locale for this maxi-wash-in), just so ALL my wash can be done in classic washers and treated with so much respect than my Shredmore. But the expense every two months would still be unBEARable for me. So, I think in the interst of fairness to both parties & collections concerned, maybe respective washers & dryers should stay in their current homes. I do have one suggestion though, MAKE YOUR BASEMENTS LARGER. Start digging new tunnels and spaces toward your neighbors' basements!!! (Well, I'll say it already, I can feel the slap from one of those six vanes coming. If I weather those slaps, does that make it a weather vane?)

SUBJECT: Kenmore Suspension
MESSAGE: Today I was in the basement de-greasing my 24" Kenmore. :-))
This machine is greasy and grimy from the inside-out...

As we all know, a washer in a kitchen catches more grease than the stove. :-((
So I must use more Simple Green to get the rest of the job done! But what I seen in this machine is hair, hair and more greasy hair all on the interior cabinet and parts! More on the machine less in the tub, I wonder why?

This machine works fine and not much needs to be done on this machine but to replace the water inlet valve, bed of nails lint filter, possible suspension balls and a much needed paint job. Also I like to place sound reducing noise on the cabinet to dampen the humming.

Here's my question, the basket leans toward the right; off center. If the balls on the suspension are worn, could it cause the basket to be pulled to the right?

I've added this link even though it may be spinning, its balanced: make note on the position of the basket it's off center as you can see!

Please let me know what to do,

Larry

Regarding the off-center -- is it maybe the tub ring that's a little off-kilter, and not the suspension? Since I worked for an dealer in Schenectady, NY, the home of GE, many of the developments were built with all GE appliances. This 30" model was very popular with a particular builder, as I remember many homes in his development having it - I had to install new dishwashers with two 3" filler strips on each side, I think they were available from GE at the time..(72-75). The motorized drawer opener was a bomb, cause it was mounted on the base of the unit, under the tub, where water could leak and screw up the drive chain - but it was a neat idea, something sorely missing from most present-day appliance lines.... SUBJECT: Living Better Electrically With GE
MESSAGE: I've been playing with the 1974 GE Dispensall washer I found at a sale a while ago and posted some pics of it in action. In the pictures you can see how the air-controlled valve controls the direction of the Filter-Flo stream. When the Dispensall unit is in place under the lid, the water streams are directed into either the detergent or fabric softener dispensers flushing their contents into the tub.

The pictures of the heating systems are interesting too, I had friends with an oil fired gravity furnace in their duplex rental. What a waste of fuel!

SUBJECT: RE: Speaking of eBay (1956 Maytag dryer)
MESSAGE: Gas dryers -- including Maytags -- that had standing pilot lights had a door on lower front of the dryer so you could gain access to the pilot. I'm guessing that the "drawer" is actually the lint filter.

Philco, Norge, and Norge-made (Montgomery) Ward's Signiture dryers had lint filters that were located near the floor. The Sept. 1966 issue of Consumer Reports objected to this location, calling it "inconvenient". The Sept. 1969 issue of Consumer Reports offered the following comment below a pic of the bottom rated Philco: "Philco's filter, close to the floor and masked by a panel may tempt you to neglect your filter-cleaning chores."

In the late 70's, one of my aunts was given a Norge Time Line dryer from the estate of a neighbor. She used it for several months, before I told her about the filter. This was the first dryer she ever owned (at the time she was still using a Maytag wringer washer) and she didn't know that there was a filter or that she had to clean it. She wasn't given the instruction booklet. The filter was easy to miss, both because its location near the floor and because you had to lower a panel to gain access to it. I'm convinced that the fact that the filter wasn't cleaned (until I came along) contributed to its untimely demise shortly thereafter. :-( (BTW, this machine HAD to be the noisiest dryer I've ever heard -- even after the filter was cleaned. It was in the basement and you could hear it no matter where you were in my aunt's house.)

MESSAGE: Greg,
Looked like you very having a stress relieving time there with your GE. It was so cool to see how the water was diverted for each of the dispensers that were in the lid. I wondered how it worked, and know with your teaching us, I know. Thanks
Why in the world did they throw out the dispenser part? It is so obvious that they took good care of the machine. I wonder what was the deal?
I loved the "suds return". When my mom had GE Washers, I always remembered that little hole in the agitator when it was filling for the rinse, and usually it did have suds coming out.
Have you done any type of test to see the washing ability of that straight agitator? I am sure that you have other GE agitator's somewhere there. Have you put one of them on?
Thanks for the pictures.

MESSAGE: That is such a cool dishwasher!
Any guess of the exact year?
I remember seeing one like this in a "Post" magazine. It was also showing the cabinets. Seemed like they were all made by GE. "GE Kitchens" or something like that. I remember also that they had the square electric hot water tank also built into the kitchen. It was hard to tell the dishwasher from the hot water tank. Then I thought the front handle on the dishwasher would give it away. Also the way the cabinet tops were shaped, it looked like a seamless top from the actual cabinet top, to the dishwasher top to the hot water tank top. I was going to buy the magazine, but he wanted $15. Nah.
Anyway, I think the Post magazine was like 1946 or something.
Thanks for the link.

MESSAGE: Greg,
Congrats on the curb-side treasure!!
I am also a fan of Norge laundry appliances. The extra noise is worth the speedier drying time due to the oversized blower. I have had good luck with 2 newer versions of this dryer and have even put off buying a newer Whirlpool Duet because of it. the only thing I wish I could change was perhaps adding a stainless steel interior like on the Amana's.

Unfortunately, the Norge was my aunt's. She lives near Pittsburgh or about 5 hours or so from where I live in New Jersey. I don't get to visit as often as I like and it disappeared between visits. :-( (It happened when she decided to replace her Maytag wringer with a Kenmore automatic in the late 70's.) I would have given just about any thing to be able to save it. I'm glad that you were able to save the one you found. :-) Congrats. What a wonderful find! Those Time Lines (both washers and dryers) are among my all time favorite machines!

Take care,

MESSAGE: Thanks Greg for those pictures, it looks a real fun machine to play with. I had another look at the pictures you took before too. I wondered why they used a toggle switch for the wash temperature and a control for the extra rinse. I have seen that more often on GE machines and wondered why they did arrange the control panel that way. It doesn't seem very logical to me. The wash temperature and the water level are the controls you would use most anyway, isn't it? And they had to make a toggle switch with three positions for this arrangement. Anyone any idea why they did it this way?

MESSAGE: I must say Greg that that was such a great find - any of the Norge time line machines are so rare. You know, I only remember seeing two of them in my life. I too would give anything for one of the washers - probably my favorite of all. Even better was the fact that it was in good cosmetic shape and worked. That is one to preserve!! Question on the dryer, though. Was that dryer considered to have an oversize fan for faster, lower temp drying?? Does it do the "4 way drying"? And I seem to remember a neighbor's Norge dryer that had a narrower exhaust than the traditional size we know today - was that my imagination?
