SUBJECT: RE: Frigidaire Coin Operated Washers (No Brand Loyalty ... except for Maytag's)
MESSAGE: Hi Scott,
The Jetcone vs. Three Ring Pulsator explanation makes sense.
Except for washing machines, my mom has no brand loyalty. Her 1952 manual defrost Hotpoint fridge was replaced by a 1973 frost free Frigidaire. That was replaced by a 2000 Whirlpool side by side. Her 1959 LK top loading portable dishwasher was replaced by a top loading Kitchen Aid portable in the mid to late 70's. She didn't get her first automatic until 1962 and you would have thought that she would have followed the lead of my aunt (and her big sister)and bought a Frigidaire, but no she had to get a Maytag like the rest of our neighbors. That Maytag served her well until around the time that the 1-18's were introduced. I remember going with my parents (and drooling over a poppy, windowed 1-18) when they went to a local appliance dealer to replace the Maytag. I tried my best to talk mom into buying the 1-18. Her response an emphatic "Why would I want to buy anything LESS than a Maytag?" (I wanted to repspond "Because they're boring!", but knew better than to argue with my parents in public!) She bought a bought a Maytag. (Sigh!)

MESSAGE: Wow! Thanks Mark. Who knew? The funny thing is that the aunt who had the late 1950's three ring Frigidaire is VERY particular. She never had an children and everything in her house had to be perfect at all times. (She even had white wall to wall carpet in the living room!) (A widow, she now lives in an assisted living facilty.) You would have thought that she would have an issue with tangling. She never mentioned it.
During the week or so that my mom was between Maytags, I volunteered to take the family wash to a local laundromat that had coin operated GE Filter Flo's. (I would have walked several miles in I knew of a laudromat that had Frigidaire Jet Cones. :-)) They were turquoise blue and had the removable lint filters/detergent dispensors. (I was always surprised that those never walked. LOL!) The only problem was that they also had Maytag like safety switches that stopped all the action when the lid was lifted. (Sob!)(BTW, that laundromat is still there. The blue GE's are long gone unfortunately.)
Thanks again,
Mike

MESSAGE: Weird, I just mentioned the same thing. The reason I thought of it was because we have a pair of very old maytags at my work. The fabric softener dispenser is long gone, but I went to unload the washer one time and there was a white, gooey, sticky mess in the lint filter. I guess someone thought the little hole in the bottom was for the detergent to fall through. Then pulling the filter out revealed an even more discusting surprise, (Black, slimy crap which probably used to be lint.) I got it all cleaned out though. (with some very hot water and a toothbrush:-)

MESSAGE: A 100 load lint filter would be great! Then it wouldn't be that bad if people forgot to emtpy it. It would be cool if a manufacturer could either put in a big disposable bag (like a vacuum bag) Or use cyclones to remove the lint. (Although, cyclones don't even work well on vacuums, they would probably work even worse on dryers.)

MESSAGE: You let a little lid switch stop your fun lol. I find it so easy to cheat even a maytag lid switch. I frequently do so at work. (yes it is a boring maytag but still fun to watch the new, to me, spin drain.) Can you imagine, the first EVER spin drain I saw was from the maytag at work. I have had 15 years of neutral drains. I must say, I like spin-drains. (I make our kenmore spin drain by interupting drain at the beginning and then holding the lid switch down.)
The way I cheat the maytag's lid switch is by holding the lid almost straight up and putting a pencil (lengthwise, parralel with the top and console.) and pushing it down into the crevice between the lid and the lid switch button. It works great. For any other washer, I just hold my little finger in the lid switch hole.

MESSAGE: The correct agitators for the Frigidaire washers were the 3 Ring agitator, the Deep Action agitator(it looked like a space capsul)and the Jet Cone agitator which was made for the 1-18 models. So many people confuse the Deep Action agitator with the Jet Cone and it's not. They're very different. The Deep Action had 4 portholes square shaped that conducted the "Jet-Away Lint Removal"As extra water came in,the force caused it to spray through the holes and down the drain taking lint and soap scum with it.the previous 3 Ring agitator used the "Lint Chaser" yellow ring to do the same. The Jet Cone agitator just moved the clothes and the seperate recirculating filter did the job removing lint.

SUBJECT: Fridgidaire Laundromat Washers
MESSAGE: Yep I Used Em'
There was a Laundromat at the north end of town in Grand Ledge near the Mobile Home park that until about 1994-95 had a few of the old avacado Fridgidaire Coin-Op's there. It had the spaceship style agitator because it was all grey rubber if my memory serves me and had the four square holes that if you opened the lid did blow water out at you or at least the one at the very end of the row did.
Several times when Ma's Maytags crapped out I took my laundry over there and washed my clothes because it was CHEAP only $.50 a load and an UNBELIEVEABLE $.25 for the dryers. An ol blind man that still lives above the building worked the mat and he told me that they seldom broke on him, because i remember buggin the hell out of him with questions about them.
If my mem serves me they had nothing but one dial for water temperature that was actually located below where you would think It should be on the instrument panel. In fact it was down just before it sloped into the flat lid surface where I would sit and read the 5 year old periodicals that most every laundtromat has. Yeah it was mounted right on the porcelain and there was NO cold water wash? They looked like Sammy Stevens washer and dryer on Bewitched. and nothing like my 1-18's. Had more of a slant back control panel to it.
Oh yeah that's right...He also had some front loaders called ironically Dexter Automagic II and III that were these huge monster washers that did double and triple loads and all of them were all kindsa different colors like orange, brown, green, yellow, red that the old blind guy must have painted because they looked HIDEOUS. anyway I never used them because the double loaders were $2.00 and the Triple loaders were 3.00.
The newer Laundromat had Whirlpool washers and dryers and Milnor and Wascomat double and triple loaders. But they were ALWAYS expensive so if the Maytags ever poohed themselves I would go to the old mat.
Besides I loved watching the Fridgidaire's go. That's why when my Great Uncle Joe called and told me that he had a pair of them...at his cottage and he wanted to put "Kenmores" up there I jumped on them. Mine are white or off white whichever you prefer and it does NOT have the window but it is a Custom Imperial set.
Anyway to finish the Laundromat thing, I know at least eight of 12 you could raise the lid and it would agitate. I loved the splat, splat, splat, splat, splat, splat, splat, splat sound they made while washing and most importantly my stuff was clean and smelled good and NOT tangled, or at least I never thought so. And I really don't think that my 1-18's do it either unless it's sheets or something big and billowy.
Yeah they had to be old because they had a dark black and white speckeled smooth inner tub. Yeah because I wondered where the hell the water went. Now I know!
Anyway that laundromat closed in June 1996 because I had JUst got back from college and wanted to go there and do my laundry in one fell swoop and lo and behold...It was dark and empty.
Sadness

MESSAGE: I checked out RePlace today. More interesting than the usual old clothes and kitchen drawer junk type of thrift store.
Think these dryers were all $50 each, looked OK:
* GE V12 "Clothes Conditioning" with foot pedal door opener
* 2 Kenmores with flip-up covers over the control panels, one brushed aluminum cover with vertical lines that looked like from the early-to-mid 60s, other "Lady Kenmore" with automatic drying control and a "Sears Best" sticker, looked like from early 70s.
* Westinghouse (not White-Westinghouse) from 70s
* avocado Maytag with single dial, looks like my DE806
$25, dryer looked kind of scratched up:
Frigidaire 1-18
Several late 70s-80s Kenmore washers too.

MESSAGE: Hi! Dear Club Member Friend's, I just saw the new "POD" for Friday, June 5th and I wanted to know who might know what year they came out For Sale? They are one of a few Models that I love the best. I esepcially like the "Slide-Rule" Timer Movement on both the Washer and Dryer. The other Model that I really like had the Controls on the lower part of the Console and a Fluorescent Light on the Top, with just a Light Lens above, without any Frame around the Lens. I think that the 2nd Machines I'm talking about is from 1968, but I don't remember the year of the other ones that are the "POD" now. I would really appreciate anyones knowledge of the years of them. I hope to find at least the Washer, of either Model year or if I see any other year Models I like and buy the Washer for my Collection. I would like very much to find a GE Spot-Scrubber Washer, but I would prefer to find one of the Models that is White-On-White.
I look forward in hearing from someone about the Model years and I look forward in reading the upcoming Postings.

MESSAGE: Jamie, that is great to go both ways to own a top loader and a front loader to get the best of both worlds! If you go with an commercial front loader, it is best that the machine sits on a concrete floor and it must be bolted down. I'm still waiting to get an answer on how to bolt one down.
Anyway, it may be wise to get a front loader that has an suspension system built in where it can be used on a solid wood floor (floor joist may need to be added to firm up the floor) without being anchored to minimize vibrations and if you do go commercial, try looking in the yellow pages under laundry and see if you could get a used machine one at a discounted price....

The Full Red indication would be from left to right, indicating that the Washer or Dryer was finished, being at the right side "Off Position" and I always thought that was such a neat way to show the progress of the Cycles.
There was also another Model Set that had the Fluorescent Light below the Console, but they looked otherwise just like the ones with the Light above the Console. For whatever reason, without looking at them directly, I don't remember why, but I didn't like the looks of the ones with the Light at the bottom, as much as being on the top of the Console.
Thanks again for the info, I look forward in hearing more stories about all of these and other Stories.
Best always, Big Teddy Bear Hugs, Steve

MESSAGE: Hi Guys.
I have been working on the westinghouse twins for a few days now. A big Thanks to Greg for the part # for the boot. also for the instructions. that part went off with no problems. Now for the big problem that I have found tonight. I looks like the speed control may be bad after all. I runs fine when the washer is empty and on spin, however when it is under a load it will not tumble. I checked to see that the pullys were tight and dry and they were. does anyone have any sugestions as to what i can do. or does anyone know where this part can be gotten. thanks

***************************************
In this issue:
1) ‘Clutch your belt!’ – Top Load Washer Drive Systems
1) Washer drive systems – belts as clutches:
Many washers today still use a drive belt of one type or another, and most of these LOOK like common ‘V-belts’ that can be bought at any auto-parts store.
But: They’re NOT! Be aware that most of these belts also serve as the spin *clutch*, and are specially treated so they can endure ‘controlled slippage’. Regular, non-treated belts will *fit* and the machine will agitate just fine, but will not slip, and all you’ll hear is ‘hummmm’ when the machine tries to spin.
This applies to those of Maytag manufacture (Maytag, Amana/Speed Queen, Norge, Admiral, Magic Chef) as well as
Frigidaire/Electrolux products (Frigidaire, Gibson, Kelvinator, Tappan, Westinghouse)
Trouble is, by the time you hear the dreaded ‘hum’, the tub’s
already full of soapy water and laundry, and the machine won’t
pump it out because it can’t spin with a ‘regular’ v-belt, designed NOT to slip! It agitated just fine, your tools are all put away, and you’re enjoying the admiring glances of the laundry person, but...
There are a couple of exceptions to the rule. GE/Hotpoints still use a spin clutch and regular belt (although on their newest ‘Profile’ models, the belt usually slips within 2-3 years anyway – from becoming oil-soaked!), and a ‘generic’ replacement will work. But the genuine GE belts are very reasonable and readily available.
Happy Washing,
Steve 1-18

SUBJECT: Rainy Weekend
MESSAGE: I spent the rainy weekend replumbing, rewiring, reventing, rearranging. The pictures will show you how things stacked up!
I also put some JB Weld in the pinholes of the GE outertub. I'm going to let it dry for a few days and then will see if the old girl is 'seaworthy.'
Plans are to move the Lady Kenmore Dryer / Kenmore 900 Washer alongside the stacked sets. That will leave 24 inches. Ha! Just enough room for a dishwasher.
The former work bench area now is home to the 60 something and 57 Maytags which are hooked up and running, but were covered with boxes and laundry at the moment. Will add pictures when I clean up that wall. If the GE is watertight, it will also go on that wall.
The other side of the island will eventually house the Frigidaire wing. Right now it too is in disarray so no pictures to post.
Hope all of you had a GREAT weekend.

Dear Club Friend's, I went out to a couple of Thrift Stores on Sunday Afternoon, with a Freind, besides going to do some Retail Shopping and I found a White GE Mini-Basket with the Lint Filter along with the Mini-Basket, for $2.99 for both item's. Now I just need to find a GE Washer with Mini-Wash System to put it in. The Mini-Basket is shaped for the
Curved-Vane Agitator, which I like over the Straight-Vane Agitator Machines. I can't wait to find a GE Washer with the Mini-Wash Cycle to put it in, to check it out, as with the Washer too. "Wish Me Luck" I guess I'll have to go to the Used Appliance Dealer's again to find the GE Mini-Wash Washer. Would anyone happen to know an approx. year of these particular Washer's? I'm guessing around maybe late-70s or early 80s, but I'm not totally sure.

MESSAGE: I got lucky when I grabbed mine off the side of a curb! Cleaned it up and plugged it in, and it runs like a champ. Unfortunately, it has some paint splatters on the control panel that I can't remove without scratching it, so I would like to find a new one if possible. My machine has the curved-vane agitator Sacto. I managed to get my mini-basket from a recycler. If you would post a picture of your machine, I can tell you when it was made approximately. Most likely, your minibasket fits a machine made in the mid 1980s if it's white. I believe earlier models had a blue mini-basket, but I'm not sure. Curved-vaned agitators made in the 1960s were usually black, while later models (1970s and later) where white.
You can sometimes find a GE Filter-Flow at a Salvation Army store, or some appliance recyclers may have one. Fewer of them will become available as time passes, and I am sure they will increase in value like old Frigidaires. I plan to move mine with me when ever I find a new place to live, whether or not there is a hookup for a washer. Good luck on finding one, and I am sure its simplicity and ease of repairs will give you many years of enjoyment!

SUBJECT: RE: The Time Has Come To Sell (I have one of those.)
MESSAGE: A couple interesting things about these machines.
1) They have an action similar to the old Westinghouse top loaders, where the basket moves with each stroke of the agitator.
2) They are belt-driven just like the old Kenmores and Whirlpools, and have a short whine with each stroke.
3) You can pull the fabric softener dispersor, and add place the detergent down the middle of the agitator, just like you would with one of the old Frigidaire Three-Rings!
The clothing doesn't rotate much, but if you place the clothing in loosely, then circulation will be adequate to produce the desired results. They suds very little, so you can add a very good dose of high-sudsing detergent for some real cleaning power! And their capacity is such that they'll almost hold as much as a full-sized machine.
There isn't much to see in these little machines, but their results will surprise you. They are not a classic in any sense of the word, but they *do* share some of the same atributes of the old Kenmores, Whirlpools, and Frigidaires (well, not with the same excitement).

SUBJECT: An Empty Basement
MESSAGE: In preparation for our move I had to clear out the basement and leave a washer and a dryer to sell with the house. Since we wont be closing on our new house for until the end of the month this is what I will be washing and drying in for a while. The washer was found about two years ago on a St. Paul street and Greg just found the dryer for me behind Lowes in Omaha. Thanks Greg, the dryer seems to work fine.
Oy, I just can't seem to get used to doing only one wash load at a time!
Oh and don't even ask me about the new dishwasher, I have never seen such a poor performance in all my life.

SUBJECT: RE: '57 maytag ad? (Re: Actuator on Lid:)
MESSAGE: Hey! Kurt, if you look real close at the part of the Lid, just above the Woman's Hand, see the Pink round Dial? That is the Water Level Control and it sets the Black "Button-Like" piece sitting down behind the Water Level Controller in and out to allow the Washer to fill at the requested levels. The
Push-Button's on the Left are either as mentioned by Unimatic1000 as Suds and Fabric Selections, etc. and the Right Push-Button's are for Water Temp Selection. See the Chrome top of the Agitator? Some of the Washer's of that era had a removable Float-Tube in the center of the Agitator, similar to that one, except the Chrome Top Float in this E-Bay Advertised Washer had the Float I believe set onto the top of the Agitator with a Suction-Like Rubber under Seal that is attached to the Chrome Float and the Agitator and is a stretchable/flexible substance and it raises with Air Pressure to allow the Float to rise and touch the Rubber Button and stop the Filling and start the Agitation. The other Model's that have the separate Float insert operates the same way of Air raising it to the Rubber Button to stop the Water Filling and start the Wash action. Inside the 2-piece Lid there is a set of Mercury Tubes with parts of Wire inside, but not quite touching each other. When the Float rises and touches the Rubber Button, the Mercury Switches inside the Lid tip towards the other direction that they were in while Water Fill and the Mercury inside closes the Circuit to start the Agitation as with in the Fill direction, they allow the Water to Fill. They used to use this similar set-up in house Thermostats to turn On and Off the Heat/Air Temp Setting, until they started finding out how dangerous that Mercury was to work with. I hope that you understand how I tried to explain this for you and I hope that this doesn't create problems with certain people, thinking that I'm a "Know-It-All" because I'm just trying to help someone "Younger" to understand about something that was before their time of how a particular action of an older Washer Filled and Started the Agitation. Maybe I'm being sarcastic, but after everything going on lately, I'm not wanting to step on "Toes" and I certainly don't want to be trying to talk about something that I might not know about. That is why I wrote my input about this, because I have worked on similar Washer's and one of our Relatioves happened to have one of the other Similar types of Washer's with the separate Float part inside the Agitator. Their Washer was the Flat-Top Maytag "AMP" with the Timer and Water Temp Controls on the
Top-Front of the Washer. OH, how I wish I had that beautiful 1950 Maytag "AMP" Washer, but my Relatives traded it in for a newer Mid-60s Maytag A-606 Washer.
My best to everyone and Big Teddy Bear Hug's, Steve

MESSAGE: Thanks Steve and Unimatic! I knew the "flat top" Maytags had that mercury switch, but I thought that once Maytag switched to the console styling, they switched the water level sensing system to today's type. I guess not until a few years later. BTW Steve, we are talking about vintage washers here so there shouldn't be a problem. I hope not anyway...
I have seen those Maytag AMP washers. For whatever reason, they remind me of a compact washer. They are pretty cool to look at though.

MESSAGE: Hey! Kurt, we seem to be just missing each other checking out the Posting's, what a laugh!!!
By the way, I forgot to mention, unless I'm wrong, I believe that the Maytag's like in the E-Bay listing are an "AMP" as well, but they naturally came out with a Console, instead of the "Flat-Top" original "AMP" Model's.
The original "Flat-Top" and I think the later ones with a Console had the Perforated Tub, but it was inside an outer Solid Tub, right next to the Preforated Tub and they then had a Larger Outer Tub, similar to the Frigidaire Washer, that the Water was Spun out into, then Pumped out of the Outer Tub. My Relative's "Flat-Top" "AMP" Washer had the Red Agitator and Red Lettering on the Timer and Water Temp Control's. It also had the separate FLoat, inside the Agitator, instead of being attached to the Agitator. There is an identical Washer on display at a local Maytag Dealer. I would love to have one of those or another older Washer, but maybe with the Pressure Fill Water Level Control. I would also love to have one of the Push-Button Mayatg Washer's, like the one that is on the Beverly Hillbilly's and with any of the Maytag Washer's I find, I don't care what Color the Cabinet's are either.
I don't know for sure what year they came out with the Pressure Controlled Filling, but I would guess between late 50s and early 60s. If anyone else knows for sure, I'm certainly curious to what year they made the change too.

The washer moved from Minneapolis to Omaha where Greg adopted her. Last summer at the DC convention, there was a similar one in the museum and I remarked what wonderful memories and sentimental value that particular machine had. Greg overheard me and told me he would part with it knowing it would go to a good home.
Last October, I was in the 'neighboorhood' and just happen to be towing a trailer behind (Yeah! Right!). Next thing I knew, there were 5 machines in the back!
One of those was the '57 maytag AMP.

MESSAGE: Funny thing about that Steve. I understand that completely - because for me the 1956 Norge Timeline provides the same connection to very happy memories of a favorite aunt who was willing to do anything in the world for me. And not just playing with the machine either. Reading, playing games, trips to the park, talking, (the way kids generally don't talk to their parents) forbidden ice cream sodas at the corner drug store fountain, etc... And in fact, she not only understood the fun of washers, she too got a great deal of pleasure out of doing laundry. It was her favorite household activity - she thought there was nothing more relaxing. So, seeing a willing pupil, she proceeded to teach me everything she knew about how to do laundry and do it flawlessly. She always commented "How can people NOT care about their laundry? Your clothes are the first thing people see when they meet you......"

We have had a few wet days in a row so I had delayed doing laundry waiting for a sunny day... It didn't arrive so I had to do a few loads in the Asko to catch up. SUBJECT: Significant's TRYING to HELP with Washday
MESSAGE: Yes,
I to have had a tragedy with my Significant Martin trying to do wash while I was gone to a funeral this spring. He WAS trying to be helpful , but this is what he did.
When you walk into my laundry on One side are my Westinghouse Space-mates that are my everyday washer and dryer, installed under a countertop with a washsink at the end by the washer. On the other side are my Frigidaire Custom Imperial 1-18's that my great uncle gave me. I never use them, except once in awhile when the mood hits me and I want to make sure by running them that their ok.
My 1966 Lady K's are at moms right now until my basements done.
Which ones do you think he decided to use.
What Happened to Martin whilst using them.
What kept me from losing sanity and choking him.
I can visiualize for all what happened in his brain of brains while it's happening to him...He sorted out stuff fine (as usual) and took them from the bedroom to the laundry. After what seemed like an eternity and weighing the pro's and con's of his ability to live; he decided he wanted to use the Frigidaires as they are "SoCool" to him, and I wasn't home so WHY NOT.
He opened the lid to the 1-18 and proceeded to dump in two cups of Cheer a cup of Borateem and a half cup of Clorox into the tub ( he ALWAYS OVERSOAPS STUFF). He loades into the washer the whites and decided that he had some room left(which he does to the Westinghouses as well) so he puts into the washer with all the previous.. four of my GOOD workshirts, and five "just purchased" Marshall Fields $30.00 heavy bath towels which were dark green.
He closes the lid sets the water selector to highest level(as usual) sets the temperature to hot/warm (why he does this confuses me)turns the dial to Regular Wash(good) and goes out to the patio to drink hims some beer and sun hiself for the afternoon (as usual on a nice day).
10 minutes later his beer is gone and needs another. He has to walk thru the back patio door into the laundry to go back into the kitchen. As he steps thru the slider he notices that he's standing in about 6 inches of thick heavy suds and my beautiful 1-18 is chugging out more and more of it with ever pulse of the cone. He hurriedly shuts it off and throws everything in the tub into a laundry basket and throws it out the back patio door.
He then grabs my broom and begins sweeping the excess suds out the doorway as well. Then he goes to his shop in the garage and gets his huge manly 12 gallon "Craftsman Shop Vac" I still give him crap for that too (it's NOT a HOOVER)..and begins to suck up all of the residue and also sucks out the tub of the 1-18. He then gets out the mop and mops up all the remains even moving the 1-18's and the Westinghouses to remove all traces of soap and all shreds of evidence for me to find.
He then reruns a load of cold/cold thru the 1-18 to rinse it out moves them back into place. Resets the Westinghouses under the counter and sets his huge blowerfan in the doorway to dry out the laundry room.
Deciding that the load was too big to hide from the ordeal in just one spot. He devises a plan to fool me (never works)so he takes the whole laundry basket out to his garage shop and uses the water hose in his laundry tub sink to rinse them all out. When he visiualizes that they are indeed ruined, he decides to hide them from me.
My Work shirts end up under a pile of rags and crap in a corner of his shop, the towels he hides in a storage closet in the garage under a pile of rags we use to wash our cars and my whites....
The man had the gumption to go up into the attic and hide them in a box of clothes I havent worn since MC Hammer was on the charts and then shuts up about the whole incident.
I get home Sunday afternoon and he's happily sitting watching his Sports in the den asking me how the funeral went and being all sorts of happy to see me, also all sorts of I love you's were exchanged. Knowing full well that he screwed up I did a check of the house and looked everywhere Last place I looked was my laundry room because well I just diddn't think to look ther first. I walked straight to the laundry room and flung open the door. Looked fine. I smiled as he was sweating like a stuck pig and opened the lid to the 1-18's and their was SOAP RESIDUE under the lid.
BUSTED...
Well that night he slept out on the couch because we had a huge fight over lying to me about everything being ok and for using my washer, and for hiding stuff instead of just telling me the truth.
As the whole story came out the next morning I felt bad for getting angry over a washer but these are my 1-18's No one uses them not even me. And every time he looked at me after telling me in his own words what happened...I laughed so hard my sides hurt.
To sum it up...he only uses the Westinghouse's now. And uses FAR FAR FAR less soap then he thought he needed to. I have drawn up pictured diograms for him to follow. He even uses a measuring cup to make sure...
So that is my laundry tale for now
And Remember...
They will mess up....When you leave em' home.
Yours
Chad

SUBJECT: 1955 Unimatic Comes to Life!
MESSAGE: Hi all - we had quite an exciting and busy weekend around here! Some of the Frigidaire enthusiasts had mentioned that they would like to see a Unimatic mechanism rebuilt so I organized the event and we had a great weekend of hunting, washing and rebuilding fun.
Thursday, Peter and I met Don and Jimmy at the Early, Iowa store I found last summer for another hunting day and found some very neat and rare machines. Jimmy found a Maytag dishwasher from 1968-69 (the first entry by Maytag into the diswasher market) and a 1968 Custom Deluxe Frigidaire washer and matching dryer. Peter found a very cool 1961 Custom Imperial Filtrator with fold-down control panel, Don found a matching dryer to his 1965 Custom Deluxe Frigidaire washer in gas. I brought home a 1968 Westinghouse top-loading washer, another top and controls for my Maytag 906 washer and a very, very rare full-sized Hoover washer and matching dryer from the early 70's made by Blackstone. I have been there three times, once with Jimmy last fall and we missed all of these cool things! It's a good thing we had 4 strapping guys there as we had to remove a window from the building and push them to waiting hands outside! When we got back to Omaha Thursday evening we were joined by Robert (uni) and Rich (golittlesport) for a fun driveway inspection of all our new finds and the beautiful 56 GE washer Robert brought to play with.
Friday we did some more washer play in the driveway and then got to work on the unimatic mechanism from my 1955 Imperial washer. We tore the whole thing down and put the parts to soak for a few hours while we watched some Frigidaire training filmstrips from the 1940's & 50's.
Saturday morning we hit a few dismal estate sales and came back to put the mechansim back together again. Within a few hours we had it finished and back in the machine running like a top. We gave it a test run, or 10 and it worked perfectly. After lots of washing and work, we had a great Chinese dinner while watching some great vintage commercials on DVD.
We had a lot of fun and shared lots of appliance stories and laughs all weekend. Thanks to all for a great weekend and your help with the fabulous 1955 unimatic washer!
I've posted pictures that Peter and I took over the course of the weekend, there is a secondary album with the unimatic pictures. Unfortunately I couldn't take many pics of the actual disassembly and rebuilding of the mechanism as my camera battery died Thursday afternoon and needed replacing. We still got lots of great pictures between us and I'm sure we'll be seeing more from the other guys as well.
Hope everyone had a great weekend - Greg

Things are just perfect...as I said It's just a washing machine incident albeit somewhat funny. I would have been dissappointed in him for hiding the ruined clothes if it had happened in the Westinghouse's. But he knew my phrase "The Frigidaire's are a nono". That was the real issue.
Significants hide small things from each other all the time...It's just that when a sane and responsible person errs like that purposely, when there is no reason or need to...well there is just no excuse for that.
Martin has used them since In fact I let him use them last Saturday because he HAD to show his mom how they worked, after questioning him as to why we needed TWO washer and dryer sets.
She hasn't been to our new house since we bought it last summer...THANK YOU HESUS...And Thank god he diddn't tell her about my LadyK's. I told her that they were my Great Grandma's and couldn't bear to part with them.
Anyway, she just couldn't get over all the woodgrain and chrome and the beige paint I thought the woman was gonna faint. I wont tell you what she said the pulsing reminded her of. Of course I would expect nothing more from an ol "Hippie turn Yuppie".
Anyway...Marty...he's a keeper just like my 1-18's and most importantly It's an "inanimate" he's "animate". I could technically find another Frigiaire...you can't find a Significant like my Marty every day.

MESSAGE: Hi everyone! I was just wondering, as I laundered my sheets in the 61 Whirlpool;am I the only one around that still uses bluing for white sheets? I can't recall anyone talking about bluing before. It really gets the sheets bright white! I have used it for years.Never bleach.Bleach yellows after a while. You have to be careful when using bluing,as it can streak the material if not mixed well.I mix it with water in an old fruit jar, then slowly pour it in the Magic-Mix filter as the washer is running on the final rinse.I then stop the machine for 5 minutes or so.It's cool how it turns the water blue! Then restart the machine and let it finish. I have also used it in my 66 G.E. Filter-Flo,pouring it in the filter tray. The stuff is not expensive, and it works great. I use Mrs. Stewarts brand because it's a liquid type. Best to all of you! (-: Rick R.

MESSAGE: Hi Greg
Your photo of the Hoover washer confirms it - the Aussie Hoovers are of Blackstone origin. When did Blackstone close up? I am wondering if the plant to manufacture those washers was shipped to Australia after Blackstone closed up shop.
That transmission, pump, the shape of the outer bowl with that angled hose connection, it's all "Aussie Hoover".
There were several revisions of that machine, in order:
-500 series - first Aussie series. Very like yours, with blue control panel, white knobs/buttons. Perf tub but spin/drains. (spin increases in speed slowly due to slippage in clutch at base of transmission.)
- 600 series - changes -> neutral drain by a giant pressure switch underneath which engages a brake on transmission outer, causing clutch to totally slip till tub is empty, then pressure switch disengages and spin starts (very unreliable system) Beige control panel with khaki insets, panel is higher around timer and lower around temp/level switches.
-700 series - what hubby had when we met, my fave of the series - plastic outer tub, improved bearing/seal, electric pump instead of belt driven pump, OOB switch deleted and clutch made softer grip so machine will always spin at least a bit even if OOB, but will spin slower if off balance.
-800 series - the rot begins - new top transmission/agitator shaft, now short shaft. (older ones, shaft and spin tube went to above water level, newer ones have short shaft - when seal wears, water leaks into trans).
-900 series - further cheapened, plastic top panel and lid, now rear-hinged.
After the 900 series, the same cabinet was retained but a whole new insides, a dreadful design based on a copy of cheap Japanese machines. A transmission with plastic gears, etc. A bad day. I believe this co-incided with Hoover Aus being taken over by Maytag, who kept Aussie Hoovers as the cheap line and had US imported Maytags, Norges and Admirals as the top lines.
Greg if you need any parts (apart from 110v electrics) let me know and I can probably get them for you. They are VERY common here, one of the most popular machines. New and used parts both easy to get.
The Westy TL is also very similar to its Aussie equivalent. The one I did up some years ago looks almost identical except it had knobs not buttons for water temp and level. It was badged "Westinghouse by Email". It now washes horse rugs for my brother-in-law.
Best Wishes
Chris.

You're right that Westy does has a bit of entertainment potential but the light needs to be moved from the bottom of the tub opening to the top, as soon as it gets sudsy it covers the light and it gets dark in there. Sort of like a thunderstorm!
No all the 220 volt lines have been taken out of the basement so no more Asko for Neal. Although it really doesn't matter, he's used it twice in nine months. He says its easier to just place things down the laundry chute and they get washed, dried and folded truly automatically. :)

I haven't noticed any increased heat in mine although I would think a little would be somewhat normal. I read in one of the service manuals from Westinghouse that the fluid can be drained from these and replaced (with Westinghouse gear oil...probably similar to auto-tranny fluid) which could help. You might also check the belt tension, if they are too tight, it might be working too hard to turn the drum.

MESSAGE: Thanks for the rundown of Aus. Hoover history - I'm not too familiar with Blackstone's history here, I would imagine they were gone in the early 70's as were several other "classic" designs by that time. I don't have any service literature or parts info on later model Blackstones so your help will be much appreciated when I set about restoring that machine. We found that it won't agitate except for very short (maybe 10 degree) strokes, but spins and works OK otherwise. Trying to remove the agitator, we broke the cap screw off in the post so that will have to be dealt with as well. Thanks for the offer of parts help, I'll probably be needing them it looks like!
Surprisingly, the Westinghouse washer worked fine when we played with it, needs a new water valve, but other than that, it's ready for cleaning and wash-play. I doubt I'll move it downstairs as I'm totally out of room, but a good garage washer nonetheless. It does use a frightening amount of water!

MESSAGE: Hey! Dear Club Friend's, I had a late 60s Slanted-Front Westinghouse Dryer that had a Cover-Lid on the Top to open and it revealed a Lint Bag, with a wire running around the outer side of it, that held the Bag in place. It seems to me that the Wire was Spring-Loaded to support it in the chamber and a Seal on the opening side of the Bag, which was Nylon Mesh to Seal it against the opening where the Lint went into the Bag, from the Dryer Drum. If I remember correctly, the Console was like a Backsplash and the Timer was the type that ran across a Ruler-Like Setting, that was flush on the Top of the Cabinet on the right side of the Top and it would jump back to the left to the beginning of the Cycling. It either had a turn Dial or Push-button's for the Temp Seting's, but I don't remember for sure. It might have had Automatic Cycle
Setting{s} too. The Console Background was Blue and Chrome and I believe that the Window was Square and the Drum was Similar to the 1950 Model, like my Parent's had. I don't even remember what happened to it, but I sort of remember where I bought it, not far from where I live now.
If anyone else remember's this Westinghouse Dryer Model, I would appreciate any info of year and maybe any other info.

I'm assuming when you say speed control your talking about the "Speed Changer" Transmission. I've never actually noticed in mine how warm the unit gets, but I suspect you might be a bit low on oil. Unfortunately those vintage Westy transmissions are permenantely sealed, but you can change they oil. There should be an oil plug somewhere on the outside of the housing. I think you might be able to get more info on this oil change in the Westinghouse Front Loader repair master book.

SUBJECT: RE: Canadian Detergents
MESSAGE: Arctic Power and ABC are made by the Colgate/Palmolive Co in Ontario and are the only 2 detergents in Canada that still have Phosphate content in them (7%). Canadian laws still allow for this reduced amount. Sunlight for years has "boasted" to be phosphate free and is made here. The Tide, Gain, Cheer etc we have here are all from the U.S. and are the same formulation as you have. A few local brands abound such as VIP. We even had a detergent made on the west coast called Vancouver Only, made especially low sudsing for Vancouver's very soft water. I would say the most unique and "vintage" detergent we have would be the Arctic Power.

SUBJECT: RE: Frigidaire Coin Operated Washers (Lint Bags:)
MESSAGE: Steve, friends of mine in Dallas had this dryer, with the ruler type indicator and the square window. Had to be from say 1958 or 1959 on to no later than 1961 or 1962 when they introduced the oval window. I was only about 5 or 6, maybe 7 at the oldest, when I got to play with this dryer. It had auto cycle, which was always used. I was barely tall enough to reach the dial at the back to turn the control and couldn't even really see any detail. I just knew where to move the needle for the auto cycle.

MESSAGE:
I read this and laughed till I peed. When my ex husband used to try and help with the washing, there was usually nothing left salvageable of the clothes....let alone my Lady Kenmore. It was the only time that machine ever had to be repaired. So I can totally sympathize!! It was even worse when he tried to load the dishwasher!! Did you ever notice that there are just some people who should never be allowed near anything mechanical, especially a vintage appliance!!!

MESSAGE: A "private auction" is nothing more than an auction that masks the names of the bidders. I'm no expert, but this auction doesn't sit well with me. A new seller, no picture and way too high a starting bid. Sounds almost too good to be true. Does anyone know this person?

MESSAGE: Greg,
If at ALL posible if you have time or the desire, would it be possible to post a picture of what the agitator on the Westinghouse top loader looks like??? I'm very curious as to it's attributes. P.S. sorry for the delay in pictures guys, I have to wait for my friend Carl to obtain the key to his grandfathers shop so I can take a look at the suspected Easy made Westinghouse. I am waiting anxiously and will post as soon as I can get a look at it :)

MESSAGE: I will explain myself then i'm done on this site. First, I had enough BS with Queen Bob. Second, I felt unconfortable about the sexual references and stories on here. "forget that pumper and pump the husband." Is there a need for that, even I didn't get that off topic. Third, a couple people have been trying to become closer to me than I am confortable with. Besides all that, is my comment not true? I truly do not care if someone is gay, I do care when they think they are any different or better than the rest of us. My opinion on some of the people on here went bad fast. So, I will still read the comments on here and look at the PODs, but I don't want to "get close" to anyone on here. (not only illegal, but very, very discusting.) I wanted to talk appliances in general, that topic changed fast. Sorry if I offended anyone (I am quite sure I offended a lot of people) my comments were not personal. I was just very unconfortable with some people's comments. I get enough sex topics at school and on TV, I don't need them here too. But don't try to change for me, I insulted a lot of you, I am sorry but you won't see me the same again. I will just clear up some misconceptions and confusion, then i'm gone.

MESSAGE: Hi Geoff - I'm happy to post more pics for you, I took four of the agitator as it's the type that has the regular/gentle combination. Under the larger agitator is a smaller one for gentle action. We didn't try the gentle agitator with clothes, but the action is very gentle even on normal speed.
Best of luck with your find, I'm anxiously awaiting news of the machine too!
Take care - Greg

SUBJECT: BETTER & DIFFERENT
MESSAGE: A guy who takes a dead 1951 Zenith TV & restores it to perfect health, IS BETTER & DIFFERENT from most people in the world today. Anyone who rescues a classic appliance from certain death & restores it, is someone who's BETTER & DIFFERENT from most folks. YES, I'd say, generally, Vintage Appliance restoration artists ARE better & different from the general population. We're GIFTED. And Yes, a lot of us ARE GAY, and to ADULTS, that's usually not a problem. THAT'S WHY I do not associate with children under the age of 18. THEY ARE NOT ADULTS & cannot handle a little 'FUN' the way adults can. I thought the 'pump your husband' comment was the best Idea I'd heard that day.
You can't please all the people all the time, but in the long run, we'll see that being BETTER & DIFFERENT will eventually be the thing to be....not ordinary & common. Boring.
I've been better & different all my life, & I'm not gonna stop now. I'm just getting started.
Peace.
