This picture has come up before, but I wanted to comment that the machine has a cartridge lint filter, which seems rare for Whirlpool and more common for Kenmore. |

Imperial styling
I liked the styling of the WP Imperial model of 55 and 56.This must be the first year WP squared off the cabinets.

The Pinkness would most likely be consider offensive in todays market.

Atlanta was
I do not remember that many Whirly's in Atlanta as the Kenmore's were much more popular, as well as Frigidaire and Maytag. But I do remember how many of them were pank (that would be southern for pink) and they were all over the place back then. Did the Kelvy's come in pank also, as I do remember seeing quite a few of them around (in white)? |

Truly the cartirdge filter would have been so much easier to clean than that darn brush! I remember having to keep an old fork handy to clean the darn thing---sometimes just leaving it out was easier! Neighbor had a Kenmore with the cartridge and just shook it out into the trash can. Speaking of which, what a joy (NOT) it is to clean the bed-of-nails filter in my 1-18! |

My mother used a haircomb to clean the MagicMix brush filter.

my mother also had a 1976 emperial set with sudsaver and the oval scrub brush like lint filter and we had this stainless steel comb for cleaning. Yuck, what to do with that lint.

Cleaning 1-18 filter
I assume you just turn it upside down and rap it on a hrad surface? The bed of nails filter actually easier to clean than cartridge OR WP brush type. Of course, the easiest of all not to have to clean it at all (WP/KM Magic Clean), 2nd best the agitator mounted pan type GE and others used. |
