Time for a launch
That right Brent!! This was the last modern appliance to be removed from our kitchen, YAY. Its only natural that instead of just putting it out in the trash we would want to use my Acme Modern Appliance Launcher (complete with the 20 foot rubber band) to launch this yukky plastic dishwasher into the atmosphere.

alternative to the appliance launcher
While looking around on the web(typed in crushers and compactors)found this website-www. sanitech.net They show the machine crushing various things-the device uses a very large auger to accomplish its destructive mission. In one film clip it shows it crushing a dishwasher.(under the one as washing machine)On the Jay Leno show last year-they had one episode that showed an appliance launcher(trebecheut)based upon a a medevial weapon used before artillery. On the show-it threw a fridge-a KN washer-and then a large box of melons. The unit used a large weight to balance the throwing arm for launching its projectiles. It used a gas engine powered winch to cock the throwing arm. At the shooting range I used to go to-there were various "condemmed" far gone fridges, washers and water heaters. |

modern dishwasher
So did this DW end up in the used appliance store like the refrigerator? How old was it? |

I have no idea where it is now, remember it's been launched. It probably landed somewhere over in St. Paul. Considering how cheaply its made it probably shattered into a million pieces. |

Oh, Robert thank you so very much for picture of the “Imperial“. Your kitchen is sooo very beautiful. All of the hard work you have done. Others like me would have given up. Not you. I have learned so much from your perseverance.

Dial at the bottom
I was wondering what the dial was at the bottom of the machine in the mechanical cover area. Is that a timer ? |

new home for KM
Hopefully it got rescued like the modern refrigerator and went on to another life. It may be "modern" but I stil hate to see things that are still useful go to waste. Too many people out there who can't afford things and would love to have something like a dishwasher of any vintage. |

Availability of vintage and used dishwashers
In my area it is difficult to find used dishwashers-You have to use word of mouth, try the Habitat For Humanity Store here(sort of like GoodWill)or read the want ad magazine.None of the swap shops or used appliance stores have them.I was lucky to get the tip on the machine I am waiting for.I was wondering why 2nd hand stores don't carry used dishwashers.Try the appliance store as well-they don't have 'em either. But did have a few used KN washers and dryers-assume they were trade ins toward new ones.Priced at $100 ea. cash-and- carry. |

There's a simple reason no used stores carry them. No demand and the fact that you have been able to buy a dishwasher for little or nothing for the last 20 or so years. We haven't sold them for many years. I do occasionally get a customer ask me for one but they want to pay 15.00 or some small amount that does'nt make it worth while to screw with them. Straight to the scrapyard they go. People see a Sears ad for a dishwasher for 150 or something and figure a used one ought to be almost free. The other appliances are headed the same direction too. I put a price of 125.00 on a washer and run an ad. People will ask me "is it a new one". How does one stay in business with peoples perception of new appliance prices. |

Availability of vintage and used dishwashers
Yes-I suppose with the low prices of "builders model" dishwashers people don't want a used one.The Habitat For Humanity store here carries them as is.They do not work on them. You take your chance. They are priced at $15-20 each. The store also had several ranges, wall ovens, cooktops, fridges and washewrs and dryers. If there is a HFH store in your area-may want to scope it out.The HFH store also had some unusual items-like surplus building materials and cans of paint that look liked they came out of peoples garages. As for the dishwashers-suppose for the most part people replace them after they have died. The dead machine may not be worth reviving. Its tub could be cracked or corroded out.I saw one "curbed" dishwasher-a GE that had a badly cracked tank.Left it for its final fate in the krusher to the dump. |

Recycler trying to sell his dishwashers
Does your area have one of those "want ad" magazines? The two used appliance stores I use here advertise in the magazine. They say its cheaper than using the newspaper. You could try advertising in the want ad magazine. |

used dishwashers
That's what I think happened with my '88 WP DW that was "curbed", I suspect it was a "remodeling" victim. It works just great, called WP and they sent me the Use & Care directions (albeit, photocopied). It did have some screws and stuff in teh pump that made a lot of noise, and taht may ahve scared the people into a new machine, but I took it apart and removed them and now it's quiet as can be. |

used DWs
Yes I agree there really isn't much to a dishwasher- motor, timer, tub, and racks. I found a KA early 90s dishwasher at the curb. Nice but it had leaked from the beginning from where the racks attach on the side walls and rusted the entire side. and when they leak there is no guarantee you'll fix them. You can buy them from se-ars and Bilders rectangle for like $125 new.

Condition of KA machine
When you mentioned in your entry that the heater and blower box weren't corroded-thats unusual for our climate.Glad to hear its in great shape.Bet after I can replace the washarm-it should go for another 20-30years.Is it safe to use "modern" dishwasher detergents in it? |
Post# 45686-9/24/2004-02:54 ||| kenmore1978 (Los Angeles) |
|
modern dishwasher detergents
newer detergents are actually probably safer, since the chlorine in older detergents tends to be somewhat corrosive. |

KA dishwasher has arrived
Touchmatic delivored the machine Sat aft.Macine is in EXCELLENT shape. It has yellow front panels. Matches my counters and walloven. Its a KDS-18 Superbia. It has the same features as my newer WP KA superbia. The machine has 3 washarms-the one on the ceiling of the washtub, the 2nd under the top rack-and the one in the bottom of the tub. The bottom needs to be repalced-Had Touchmatic order the parts. Will put the machine in service when the parts come in.He also had a spare timer that would fit it.Put it with my spares for my other machines. The KDS-18 is SO MUCH better made than the WP-KA version.Takes 2 people just to lift it!The WP version is much lighter.-thats a dishwasher!-Hobart built them well! |
