While I was never a big fan of the Andy Griffith show, I remember years ago when I was a kid seeing an episode where Andy had opened a Laundromat to make some extra cash to save for his sons college tuition. Now that it's out on DVD I finally got to see that last season episode again!

And check out these Pink Beauties! When I was a kid I saw it on a black and white TV so I never realized that the washers were pink. Although I did know exactly what they were...

More free dryers! Who knew some laundromat dryers were free back then?

Well, well, the Sheriff prefers pink. Didn't Goober stay overnight one episode when aunt Bee went out of town? Andy dated that beard of a girl, but nothing ever happened what with fat aunt Bea conveniently always around. And Floyd, if there ever was a cross dresser candidate in Mayberry..it is starting to add up...pink washers and an unmarried man..I'd say he was before his time in the message.

FRIGIDAIRE commercial washers and the dryers are either Cissel or Hoyt.

Think "free drying" was part of a gimick to get women into the laundromat. Being out in the country, most women would have simply taken their wash home to be hung out on clothes lines. Also remember quite allot of laundry in those days was ironed, and it is easier to take damp line dried laundry down (folding carefully of course) and iron, than sprinkle lots of machine dried laundry and wait for it to "dampen"
It is always fun to see black and white television programs in colour. Always seems strange to me though, as if persons before the 1960's or so LIVED in black and white! *LOL

BTW, those coin-op washers in the pictures above are the very last Unimatic models ever produced. Made from 1962-1964
They covered Frigidaire with Laundercoin for the show.

Look at the width of those cabinets, the metal handle on the lid and the extreme angle of the backsplash. Those look like Whirlpools to me.

Ummmm...

That's a FRIGIDAIRE metal handle in the lid. The same handle used on the WO-65 through the WI-56 models.
By the way, when exactly did Whirlpool enter the coin laundry market?

Could be Whirlpool......

Poly-Clean Laundry Centers, had these washers with those window type lids, and first begining of the Wedge control panel Whirlpool was famous for years
Poly Clean Laundry Centers- only used RCA Whirlpool machines, except for those big dryers
Also, didn't this show feature all RCA Whirlpool appliances when Aunt Bea won on a tv show? I believe they were all Coppertone
Could be wrong...

Whirlpool never made any commercial washers(top loading)with windows on their lids.Only FRIGIDAIRE and Kelvinator commercial top loaders had window lids.

RESET BUTTON

You can see clearly the motor overload reset button on those washers - a Frigidaire dead give-away
I also noticed how un-level they are

I imagine the prop department doctored the machines to disguise the brand. A fake panel probably was affixed over the real consoles.

In picture # 186825 there does appear to be provision for side-opening lid access. Notice also the exposed lid hinges, and how close the rear of the lid is to the console. The angled overhang on the consoles would prevent the lids from opening to a fully vertical position.

Lawdy, look at all that hairspray in action!

If you tried to recreate all that today, you'd have to file an environmental impact statement over all those PVCs.

You guys are so funny but you know darned well that those machines are either Calypso's or Bendix Frontloaders tipped on their backs, or Easies with their spinners chopped off. The reset buttons are fake disguises to trick everybody into thinking they're Frigidaires.

The Dryers

Are Cissell model g they were the best on the market .for many years. Still some around today. Made to last they weighed in at 1800 lbs today most 50 lb dryers avg around 600 to 700 lbs if that much.

I too noticed how each machine is all akimbo in terms of level. I'm surprised that they didn't bother to at least level the fronts of the machines...or maybe floors in Mayberry are just more uneven :-)

I don't know, Robert. Are you sure it wasn't just a lesser-known division?

Guys......Robert is correct.....

Robert is right, it is a Frididaire, of sorts. GM wanted to branch out into the coin laundry niche (as other companies were doing in the late 50s and early 60s). By using the Frididaire division, and calling it by another name (which is very frequently done), GM entered the coin laundry areana with "Laundercoin". It's no different than a Buick and Cheverolet; under the hood or under the chassis, it's still a GM product.

Frigidaire.......

Hey Guys
One of my earliest appliance memories- in fact one of my earliest memories full stop! is mum lifting me up and sitting me down on top of what I would strongly suspect to be one of these machines at our local Frigidaire equipped laundrette. They had a row of maybe 16 machines in alternating pink, turq and yellow. They went about 15 yrs ago(some were advertised as being for sale for I seem to remember £30 each!!).

The launderette is actually still open- it now has a mixiture of yellow Maytag top loaders(replacements for the Frigidaires), Commercial Neptunes!!!!!!!, and Commercial Electrolux front loaders.

Seamus

P.s It still has a sign on the wall with "The cleanest, safest washing action in the world"- did Frigidaire state this in the US????

First time I saw Frigidaire washers

neptunebob's profile picture
Was in a coin laundry in Davenport, IA when we took a family trip to Kansas in 1973. They were turquoise and I had never seen a Frigidaire washer before. I remember the lid had a square window rather than the round one. I think they got the clothes really clean and were fast, because who wants to spend vacation in a coin laundry - although that always seems to happen!

that the vehicles were supplied by the Ford Motor Company and got to keep their emblems, but General Motors had the Frigidaire name covered up. Oh why didn't Philco have a coin op washer to make life easier!
