well here is my L5 laundromat.. this has been and still is my dream machine.. had never seen one while growing up so when i found this one in california almost 5 years ago id bought it.. at the time i didnt care that it was a dead machine and had been sitting for 25 years..had her shipped and found her boot was missing so no prob greg talked me through retro fitting a boot.. tore it down and put it back together then went to test her and found that not only did she leak but her changer was shot.. so apart she came for a second time.. so all was good except for the changer..so then she sat and waited.. then someone stepped in and did me the most wonderful favor.. terry told roger about my prob and the went on a hunt.. and guess what they found?? yep a good changer.. roger took the time to pull and ship a changer to st louis from tucson what a awesome guy... so finally got the changer in and got to do a test load this eve...yea it works so here are a few pics of a really cool machine doing its first load in close to 30 years..am so happy i could just pee

ha ha and here is the best of all i so had to laugh.. since i dont have a basement and its to cold for this child to live in the garage any longer she now lives in the living room ha ha.. well for this first load i rolled her up to the kitchen sink.. hand the drain hose all set in the sink drain and was fine.. did the wash drain and first rinse drain just fine.. then mom came in to watch the machine run.. she was playing with the drain hose when the pump kicked in for its final drain.. it must have frightened her and she jumped and yanked the hose out of the sink.. well that westy has a strong pump so needless to say i got a full kitchne wash down.. you have to love it

Re: Westinghouse washers

Theses are my all time favorite next to a Norge product. Great pics. In fact they tie for first. I like the slant front of the washer gives it a character all its own and unique. Westytoploader has a round washer from a laundromat the turquiose machine. I think that is a real cool design and the town that I lived in, in New York when I was growing up put the round Westies in one of the laundromats. Don't know if its still going because I havn't lived there for fourty years. Danf.

Re: Westinghouse Laundromat

I was wondering since the washer has a slow spin speed could a different motor say a 3/4 hp. motor be adapted to it or would that be a blasphemy to do that? Just wondering. Danf.

Re: Chris & Norgeman:

Chris, I didn't want to take over your Posting, without commenting to you first. Congratulations on getting your great Westinghouse Slant-Front Washer operating again. I love those Washers best of all. One of our Neighbors of long ago, had the Matching Washer and Dryer, of a later Model Set and the Dryer was the one that Plays "How Dry I Am" when it was completing the Drying. The Windows had the Blue Diamond look around the Window area of Decoration backgrounds. When they moved, the Husband took them to the Dump, because the Timer had gone out on the Washer. I wanted those Machines so bad, but I was afraid that my Parent's wouldn't allow me to get them. Actually the Washer Timer, just somehow pushed in to "Stop" once in a while and she had to come out to the Garage and pull the Timer Knob out again and hold it for a short time, to get it going again. OH! How I wish I could have gotten them, I would probably still have them operating now.

Peace, Fun Laundry Times in your Westinghouse Washer, Steve

Norgeman, I believe that you meant to say that "Westyslantfront" Ross in Arizona has the Blue Round Cabinet Coin-Operated Westinghouse Laundromat Washer.

Peace and Great Laundry Days, with a Slant-Front Westinghouse Washer, Steve

Chris, Congratulations! She is a beautiful Westinghouse. Is she more of a Wanda or a Wylene? There is nothing wrong with giving her a place in the living room. A long awaited dream come true deserves a place of honor. When the Laundromat was introduced, the shape was described as like a Governor Winthrop Desk. So even if she is not a piece of living room furniture, she has a dignified furniture shape.
Have fun with her!
Tom

Great to see one of these machines brought back to life. Mine is a total basket case in appearance but I know it's got potential because I've used it as my main machine, albeit many many years ago. I'm just not the guy who is going to tackle this restoration job. Good to know the boot can be retro-fitted as I was so sure the bad boot on mine would be impossible to replace and thus relegate it to the ranks of parts machines. Now I feel that whomever ends up with this old gal can make her viable again.

WOW, Chris. Way to go!!!! It's a beautiful machine. I love the way they operate -- and they're so quiet. Your work is superb. I'm delighted for you.

PS The underwear is great, too. Last time I saw you in yours, seems like they were gray.

A machine for which the phrase "beauty in simplicity" seems apt. Congratulations!

I get a kick from the relatively small tub size compared to the behemoths in existence today. Many happy washloads to you.

Re: Changer:

Courtney, "c'villewasherbo" since no one else has replied to your inquiry, I thought that I would. As far as I know, the Changer in a Westinghouse Front-Load Washer, was also known in most other Washers as the Gearcase or Transmission. It is also used similarly as to a Gearcase or Transmission, to "Change" the Speed of the Basket/Tub from Tumbling to Spinning. I hope that this helps you to better understand what the Changer is and not being a Coin Acceptor and/or Maker, as one might think of or assume.

Peace and Kind Regards, Steve

Changer, spin speed

C'villewasherbo, the changer is a kind of transmission used in early front-loaders. It drives the tub through a low gear ratio for tumble speed, and for spin a solenoid (electromagnet) pulls a lever to engage a clutch for the high (spin) speed. Unfortunately, the spin speed is only about 320 r.p.m. or so. Norgeman, it's not the horsepower that matters. These machines were driven by induction motors which only ran at one speed-1725 r.p.m. I've often wondered why they didn't use two-speed motors (1725 r.p.m. low, 3450 r.p.m. high). Combined with the transmission, this would give a spin speed of about 640 r.p.m., which would have made a big difference. Such motors existed then. Nowadays, most front-loaders use a 3-phase induction motor powered off a variable-frequency inverter. Since the speed of an induction motor is keyed to the frequency of the supply current, varying the frequency varies the speed. Controlled by microprocessors, the motor's speed can vary widely, usually from about 600 up to about 18,000 r.p.m. The mechanical complexity of transmissions has been replaced by the electronic complexity of control boards,

Movie star???

There's a scene in the 1950's movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still" staring Michael Rene where the visitor from outer space causes all the electricity all over the world to fail, and a housewife is taking her wet laundry out of a Westy SF just like the one Chris as restored.

Not sure about the spelling of Michael's last name.
