What's this?

(Hint: Todd (washerlover) was so kind as to give me this set and another washer, which will be featured at the wash-in. I've spent the last several weeks doing bits-and-pieces work to get the washer back into shape...and thanks to bpetersxx (Pete) for the part number ;-) )

Please excuse the fuzz. It just finished a load of towels.

Very nice Nate, looking forward to seeing it! I know it's a Kenmore, but the question is, is it a Lady?

Congratulations! That 29" dryer design is the best ever...I would love to find one down here.

Washing away...

Not ladies, but then again, I needed some butchness in the laundry room to replace the Norge.

By the way, someone asked how to make the detergent dispenser run constantly on this model--it's controlled by a solenoid. If you bypass the solenoid with a straight section of pipe, it'd run all the time, but there's really no point; it tends to clog up with lint and such if run constantly (it ejects the water out of a very thin slit).

This machine needed a new doughnut seal (SURPRISE!!) and a rebuild of the outer tub in two places--the center, where the doughnut seal had been compressed by the centerpost and tub rusting, and on the outer edge, where someone had apparently worked on the machine once-upon-a-time, dropped the outer tub, dented it, chipped the porcelain, and allowed it to rust through.

It also needed to have the suspension brackets tightened (which solved a particularly nasty off-balance spin issue), and to have the belt tightened (which solved an "I don't want to drain" issue).

Buttons close-up for the 900

We have been finding a few of these recently, haven't we?

The thing I love about it is how quiet it is (it's a thin-belt design). It makes none of the typical Kenmore sounds; in fact, with the exception of the wig-wag clunks, it's about as quiet as a Maytag.

It also has a nice three-solenoid thermostatic water valve that keeps the warm/hot/cold temperatures very constant. Interestingly, even full-on hot water isn't too hot to stick your hand in on this machine.

One thing I did learn is that the solenoid-controlled bleach/fabric-softener dispensers on this machine tend to yuck-up very quickly, even if you dilute what you're putting in. When I first got the machine, here's what they looked like:

roto204's profile picture
After a long, hot soak in hot, hot, hot water and about a quarter cup of Electrasol, all the fabric-softener and bleach scuz was gone.

I also had to clean the dispenser hose (it was crammed full of a similar crystalline substance), but when it was all said and done, it dispenses perfectly now :-)

Nate, Steve 1-18 has a 900 washer and is paired with a LK dryer (although his is a little bit different year, byut his pair are form the same year for each other). I loved them when I visited with them in 2002. I was 99.99% sure this is what it was.

It's worth the trip just to see you guys; the holy trinity, but aside from that...

It's also worth the trip just to see these and Ross' Thor. I'm sure Roger will have awesome goodies, as usual, too.

May I request a favor?

A recreation of Bob-load Bob Appnut holding his hand under the portable Kitchen Aid DW dishcarge hose while discharging waste water, and watching him show Retromom Venus food chunks blow out? *LOL*

I also notice an unfamiliar location where they are hooked up as well...are you in a new place with a full-sized laundry room now? That's awesome!

What year is this pair? Wonderfule set!

How do you have your Vari-Felx set? I found that if you have the fins even with the skirt, you get the best wash action (is that one step down from all the way out?). If you extend them all the way out, it is REALLY ROUGH and all the way in is REALLY GENTLE.

It's amazing the difference each inch makes!

Those look to be mid 70's issue machines. My mom's wasn't as fancy and didn't have the LK-type buttons but it did have the same bleach and softener dispensers and you're right, they tended to gum up even with pre-diluted softener. I had that dispenser assembly apart a few times. Her machine had a "Soak and Wash" setting that employed the detergent dispenser. The dispenser was placed over a raised base in the other corner above the tub on the same side as the bleach/softener dispensers. When the washer was set for "Soak and Wash" or was set to the maximum wash time, after the fill a solenoid would open the flap on the bottom of the detergent dispenser and the powder would fall into the water. Rarely used this and even though the machine is gone now, the dispenser stayed behind and is still knocking around the laundry area at my mom's.

Thanks, guys!!

Austin--Yes, there are new digs, with a laundry room. Only room for one set, alas! Nevertheless, I'm learning to love avocado.

These machines are from 1970, according to the 110.70 model number.

I agree with you Peter--the Vari-Flex has some deceptive settings. All the way out, and it's a butt-whoopin'; all the way in and on Delicates, and wet Kleenex couldn't roll over. But it gives you lots of interesting options--like running your delicates on Normal, with the retracted fins, so you still get good, gentle action.

I was afraid the machine was broken when I ran a blanket through on Delicates--until I realized that the Delicates button references the infamous agitate-stop-drain-fill-agitate Permanent Press cycle. How fun!

Venus--But of course you can push the buttons! :-D It's fun to push a bunch and see which options cancel automatically. For instance, the machine is absolutely loathe to give a cold rinse, and selecting almost any normal cycle kicks that button out.

Bob--Aw, you know Will would give permission for a little button-pushing ;-) Besides, we have a vertical spin-tube to test, and we don't want too much pre-rinsing to spoil the results :-D

Dick--Thank you :-) Gosh, it's satisfying to have this nice, decent set, after the Evil Kenmore™ from '61...though tearing this machine apart and redoing the innards created a serious sense of déja vù...

Toggle--Why don't we affix a nylon stocking to the outlet on the KitchenAid, and show Venus what it looks like after a no-pre-rinse load? We could chase her around with it :-D

That's almost identical to the Lady K. at the Fleckenschteen. Why isn't it a Lady. The bar buttons are identical; maybe there's no garage door for the control panel?

As soon as I saw those tell-tale Hershey Bar buttons, I knew at once.

900s--the ''value-minded'' Cadillacs

roto204's profile picture
They're bleedin' close, but not quite Ladies. They also lack a couple of buttons that the Ladies have, though what those are escapes me at the moment--someone posted a pic of their control panel the other day, though, and I remember noticing them right off.

Nevertheless, lots of fun :-D. And no, no garage-door cover for the control panel; the light comes on when the timer is in an active portion of the cycle.

Venus--oh dear, wouldn't you always prefer to see what came off the dishes, so that you have the satisfaction of knowing your dishes are clean? ;-)

...what little lid went on the detergent dispenser? And was it plastic, or metal? I'm guessing, due to its absence, that it was probably plastic.

Kenmore 900 Washer Cover

Nate ;I think that your detergent dispenser cover on the washer was the brushed silver just like your dryer, in later years on the 900 line that went to an all matching plastic cover that was the same color as the cabinet, if i come across one in my stach of kenmore parts i`ll let you know John
