It's almost like a Westinghouse agitator but at the end of the ramp, the blades square off! The tub does NOT index.

Mark thatnks for all closeups here too. I am guess that water save cycle is the wash, spin/spray rinse, spin, and stops at the beginning of the real rinse. Intersting. Explain if I've not guessed correctly. Thanks. Bob

Yet another AWESOME machine, and what a cool control panel! I've never seen one of these before in pictures; only the Hoover version. If I'm not mistaken, aren't these the same as the older Aussie Hoovers as well?

Interesting front fill! Considering the style of the ramp agitator, I'm assuming the wash action is like the GE, with that "dip-roll" action?

I wonder if that filter stream is "normal" or if something is obstructing a pump. Looks kinda weak.

Great Turnover!

This machine has great turnover!

What is the transmission like in these machines?? Like a Westinghouse?? The older Aussie Hoover's wash like this and they have a great big round cast iron gearbox.

With the way the clothes circulate clockwise you would almost think it was an indexing basket. Very nice washer...and from Americas oldest manufacture of washers no less.

Have to ask this. What year is the machine? Did Blackstone produce all their own washers up till the end,..or was Westinghouse involved at all?

This is fascinating! I do believe these machines were produced in NY state, yet..in all my years i have never actually seen one of their washers in the northeast...though i did see an old junked dryer once.

After seeing the pictures and film clips-would love to have a Blackstone!

Mark, thanks so much for sharing all the great pictures. First time I have ever seen a newer Blackstone up close. Very nice control panel, does it have any lights? Looks like an unusual fill tube as well. Hope that you guys are having a blast which I am sure you are. Terry

Great video and pics; thanks, Mark!

One question: Is the 'water saver' option (button 4) a suds saver or does it have another function?

I always thought that Blackstone washers had very interesting designs. It's a shame that they didn't enjoy a very large market share.

I very much enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing and thanks for saving this awesome machine.

Commercial Blackstone

I may be telling something everyone already knows, but these perf tub Blackstones were also available in coin-op versions.I visited a friend in the late 70s in Ft Wayne,In.in the midst of a long road trip and needed to wash. The laundry in his apt.complex was equipped with Blackstones.Really quality looking machines, and remember the washing action was teriffic.
I was raised in southern West Virginia(45 minutes from Wytheville Mark). My father got his teaching degree the year after I was born(1958)and could not find a position near our home.He accepted a job in Toms River,NJ,where we lived for three years. My mother made a friend whose husband was very successful.Probably the first people with money my mom had ever been around. She was VERY brand conscious(she drove a Jag and he drove Lincolns).Blackstone was all she would use in her home,so it was considered a premium brand in that part of the country.

Its where the Aussie Hoover comes from

Hi Guys,

That washbowl, and that agitator are identical to the one in the Aussie Hoover. The one Leon and I bought in Melb should arrive this week, and I'll take some pics to compare.

Is this really from the 70's? By the late 60's the Aussie ones had an integral tub ring that did away with the clothes guard, and the lint filter is mounted on outer tub ring.

My understanding is, that there is no Westinghouse to be seen here at all, its all Blackstone. The design is like a Maytag in many ways, with a centre point suspension with 4 springs, belt driven gearbox and pump. The big differences are that the outer tub, bolts onto the gearbox, and there is a high rise agitator shaft. The Hoovers have a light and quite flimsy cabinet when it is dissassembled, however due to the cast iron gearbox, they are an amazingly heavy machine to try and move. In Australia, that gearbox with an electric pump, survived up until the last 80's, when it was replaced with the standard reversing motor design that most Aussie washers have now had for 20 years.

Hey Mark. Great find!!! I wasn't even aware that Blackstone made washers that recently. Thanks for sharing.

Per the scanned 1974 Blackstone laundry brochure that Robert (I think) posted long ago, this is a TOL model BA-902. Interestingly, it doesn't have a lighted console, but the next lower model BA-825 did have a fluorescent light.

Was Blackstone's market confined to the Northeast?
I've never heard or seen them here in New Orleans.

Thanks Mulls/Tom for confirming that these were also available as coin-op machines. When I lived in Bozeman, MT there was a coin-op laundry that had a few of those machines, and I've spent years trying to remember what brand they were. When I saw Lightedcontrols' pictures the first thought that came to mind was that the Blackstone's interior looks exactly like I remembered those coin-ops in Montana. I never would have guessed that they were Blackstones, though!
