This is the standard version of the twin tub my mum had when I was a child - Phillips Top Twin. I have only ever seen pictures of them and never seen one for sale. I hope this is rescued and restored if its possible.

Restoration Project...

I remember seeing these in the early seventies and thinking wow, those controls on the top, I only knew the Servis models with the controls on the front, nice machines, Keith (keymatic) has a pristine one, fast spin at 3,000rpm which was supposed to be the quietest on the market, the agi does 120 opm, housed in a metal gearbox, giving a thorough wash, and also has the swing out discharge hose...nice for a thorough restoration project...

Interesting Twinnie

Does Philips continue to manufacture appliances in the UK today?

Did you check out the rest of this guy's twinnies? Nice selection!

Philips don't seem to make white goods anymore, which is a great shame as from my experience, the quality of what they did make was very high. My mother had a Philips/Whirlpool FL washer from 1993 to 2006 and it was a great workhorse but eventually gave up. These twin tubs that they made were great machines and if I could find a deluxe model I would jump for joy. There are so few of them around I assume that they weren't very popular although from the WHICH reports that I have read, they were always given very high ratings and were not the highest priced. Hoover, Servis and Hotpoint must have had more marketing clout at the time.

Hoovermatic... was your mothers Philips Whirlpool FL washer some form of Aqualine model or similar?
My aunt had one of these and she later passed it on to a friend and did an outstanding job.
Washed excelently, Rinsed fabulously and the spin cycles were very entertaining!
These machines were built like tanks and took whatever was threw at them.

If I remember correctly my friends lasted something like 15 years repair free, and was only replaced as the door seal had torn. (If I'd known more about it, I would have probably nabbed the machine for myself and fixed the seal).

Anyhoo Enough of my blabbering!

It was an Aqualine model and one of the last of the range - it ws the last one in the shop if I remember. I was very similar to that machine in the link but it had the Philips name in the logo and a separate thermostat dial.

Philips Major Appliances

Hi Paul, Was your model like this etc??

Keiths model has the light blue control panel, I do remember looking at this in Trident when my Nan bought her Frigidaire spinner...

Philips Major Appliances where the best value for money mid range appliances about in the 70`, / 80`s, 10 yr guarantee on the polytubs and permag motors, the first of any manufacturer to do that...

Cheers, Mike

YES YES YES!!! That's the one - several things I remember about this machine but mostly the washtub lid was not attached to the machine and square, the spinner had a hinged rigid spin mat which served no purpose as I was regularly called upon to reach down the side of the spin can to rescue socks die to my skinny arms!! and the telescopic arm was great fun. I would LOVE to own this machine!!! Thanks for the pic - it is so clear

Mike,

Were those machines made in the UK? I don't think I have ever seen such a machine overhere in Holland.

Philips

Hi Louis

I always thought these where made with you as well, I`m sure they where made over here in Hipperhome, Halifax, the main factory, Keith may be able to confirm that???

It was a solid made machine, discharge arm like the early hotpoints, and also the fast 3,000 spin speed I remember seeing one being demonstrated in the town Co-Op department store, (Helena House) and they put a wet rubber bath mat down one side of the spinner, this was to demo the unique spin balancing system, other machine would have shuddered themselves to bits , but the Philips carried on near silent and with no vibration....I do like the "Stand Up" control panel, such a change from them on the front etc..

Mike

Mike,

The first Philips washing machine I ever saw was the automatic toploader with glass lid that my aunt had. And until now I haven't come across a brochure with Philips Twintops in it. It is ofcourse possible that they were sold here, but no signs of that yet. A pity though, they are goodlooking machines.

Louis
