Hi all!

First off, I apologize if this is in the wrong spot... I am relatively sure the machine in question is old enough.

My little sister just moved into a new townhouse in the DC suburbs. The previous owner left his w/d, and they have a newish kenmore washer and a sweet GE dryer, model DDE8200GALWH.

I oiled the bearing of the dryer to stop it from squeaking. The little plate that covers the pick-up is missing, and the little metal tang no longer touches the drum. Is that a problem?

I'm also trying to figure out if there is supposed to be some sort of duct that fits into the bottom of the door to direct air and lint into the lint screen. As it stands, there is none, and there is a gap that lets small items and the dreaded dryer sheets to get sucked into the lint filter, blocking the flow of air. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Lint Filter Info:

Unfortunately, GE/Hotpoint and the other branches of GE Dryers didn't have any kind of Grid covering the Lint Filter, until way later on, but I'm not too sure when. I would guess around the end of the era of the Filter-Flow Models were renovated, to basically what the Washers and Dryers are today.

I've never really done too much Repairing of GE/Hotpoint/Branched Dryers, but if what I'm thinking that you are talking about, being the Metal Strap that is supposed to touch the Shaft of the Dryer Drum, is a Grounding Strap and does need to be touching the Shaft. I've loosened them in the past when I've worked on those Dryers and bent the Metal Strap, so it would touch the Shaft again. You might be able to find someone on the Club Site, or maybe even a 2nd Hand Appliance Shop that has an extra Cover for the Drum Shaft opening. It should be covered, if any reason, to prevent extra Dust/Dirt from getting in there. You could also, if you want to see if any new Parts are still available, check on the Repair-Clinic Web-Site also.

I hope that this helps you at least somewhat. Let us all know what you find out of locating Parts that you need.

Peace and Good Drying in a Vintage GE Dryer, Steve

Actually the lint filters in the first GE high speed dryers had prety neat wire grids across the opening of the lint filter that pivoted in holes at the rear of the sides of the metal frame. Unfortunately, they became more and more minimalist until they disappeared. I do know that the door could not be closed if the grid was left in the up position so maybe as people got stupider or cared less (if possible) GE just eliminated the part as a way to cut down on complaints. The first filter design in 1957 was a nylon sack which was soon swapped with the easier to clean screen. The screen got coarser over the years, possibly to compensate for the clogging of the screen from dryer sheet use. You could certainly bend some wire so that it would sit in the screen and function to keep small things out of it. It does mean that the dryer has a clean short vent with strong suction if it's pulling things into the screen. I hope that means your sister will not have to put up with the nasty situation of lint gathering between the opening for the door and the plug on the inside of the door that routes the air stream into the filter. Tom

If the dryer is squeaking, you need to replace the round teflon bearing that mounts over the drum shaft. Squeaking is caused by the metal drum shaft rubbing against the bearing holder that is attached to the heater housing. Part # is WE3X75. Hope this helps.
