Hello everyone hope all is well,
So my question is has the whirlpool calypso been improved or revamped? The reason i asked is this week i saw in 2 seperate newspapers had a sale on the whirlpool calypso pc richard had them for 599.99 and another smaller aplliance store had them (in manhattan) for 509.99. I know there infamous for many problems even CR has strongly advised against it and the kenmore cousin LOL. However i checked whirlpools website and they arent listed anymore so are the stores trying to sell or more like get rid of there overstacked calypso's? Ive heard very good and very bad things about them 50/50 feelings about those models just never thought till this day they would sell them any thoughts anyone?

pc richard has a funny way of selling off overstocks as if they were brand new models

i also cannot believe whirlpool would resurrect the calypso nameplate, with so much negative nostalgia attached to it

is honig's parkway on webster avenue still in existence

he would know for sure

Well one thing's for sure, they are all gone from the Sears outlet store here in Orlando. Not one left.

Anybody who has one ought to hold onto it. It's definitely destined to be a collector's item in the future!

They are kinda unique. I'd love to keep mine, but really don't have any place to put it.

honig's

give 'em a call
or pass by

see what they have to say about it

my grandmother would take me to honig's
like one would take a normal child
to an amusement park
or the movies

I might would buy a NIB Calypso if I could find one at a relatively give-away price. The used one I have is in good-enough mechanical condition, but has some rusting and hard water scum. I've been using it fairly often. Did a load of jeans Friday evening, and some "shop rags" Sat evening.

I see them for sale locally on Craigslist. Some are even free, but with various "issues", LOL. I was predicting they'd be potential collector's items as soon as they came out, however, the very poor reliability record tends to make me shy away from acquiring one.

One with a dealer window lid would be a keeper, though.

My wife and I have had a Kenmore Elite Calypso for 4 years now with not a bit of trouble. Now granted, I take it apart annnualy and clean out soap scum, stuck lint balls around the tub and stuff of that nature. What failures can i anticipate? Electronic? Mechanical? What have you all seen out there?

Dave - check the fit of the wash plate at the bottom. After about 6 years of hard use, mine has loosened up such that you can move it up and down with your hand if you grasp the center post and pull up on it. Also, make sure none of the dispensers are leaking into the cabinet of the machine. My bleach dispenser has been leaking and has rusted through the rear support member of the machine, as well as the base pan so that you can actually poke holes in the base with your fingers. Others have had problems with the water pumps, electronics, etc. I've never had any problems with mine until the wash plate loosened up. But its also been used hard, too which may not have helped the situation. Even still, it is still working fine, just noisy. Apparently this is an expensive repair (parts as well as labor) as it requires disassembly of the entire machine. If I knew how to do it, I might attempt it myself.

Since the class-action suit was settled, there seems to be a lot moving in the trade-in arena, esp from Sear's. Hell, I think I have 16 of the infernal machines in the warehouse right now.

Greg - thanks for the manual link. It worked fine. I think I'm gonna tackle trying to fix the machine myself. It really isn't hard to work on.

Do folks replace their calypsos with the most fundamentally basic machines available?

From what I've seen, the folks I deal with have gone basic & said screw the new-fangled TL technology.
