My name is John. I reside in Greensburg, PA (40 East of Pittsburgh). A year ago, we purchased an older home. In the basement was a Maytag Automatic washer. It was given to the wife of the fellow who owned the home back in 1964. She had several wringer type washers that she used and never got around to using the gift her husband gave her. The washer has never been hooked up or turned on. It still has some of the paperwork that came with it as well as the box of Tide and the rubber hoses that come with it. It still sits on the shipping materials that it sat on when it was delivered on Ash Wednesday 1964. They would like to find a good home for this machine... |

Wow - truly an amazing find. This is almost as special as the 10 millionth Maytag that is at the Jasper County Museum - a brand new 1956 140 AMP, with the hoses and shipping ring still in tact. The only difference with that machine and this is - the 140 was probably never crated - this was. Absolutely cool washer - Wow - PA has had its fair share of goodies lately! Ben |

Due to the interest being displayed, I feel that I am obligated to run a silent auction on our Maytag. Bidding will be accepted until 11:00 PM on Saturday evening, the 7th. Be advised that shipping and handling/packaging costs will be in addition to the accepted bid. Please send us a message containing your bid along with your contact info if you wish to participate in the auction. For your reference, I currently have an offer of $200. You will be notified via e-mail as to the result of the matter on Saturday evening, worst case sometime on Easter Sunday. The items included in the lot are the washer itself, the hoses that came in the tub along with the paperwork that we found that was associated with the washer. As noted, the washer was still on the shipping crate base that it arrived here on Ash Wednesday 1964. There is no evidence that it has ever been hooked up or turned on, so to my knowledge, it is in the same condition as the day it was delived. Thank you for your interest and good luck if you choose to submit a bid. Best regards, John Pfeffer |

He just hit me up on my web site and said the bidding was up to $500.00. I think he is just trying to raise the price from "a good home" to whoever is going to pay the highest price. Wanting money for this machine is fine, but going about it in this manner is unacceptable. If he wants to auction it off, he should put it on eBay. Best wishes to whoever wins it. Although new is hard to find, they are available in used condition. |

Oh God, this is turning out to be a disaster. The only thing that is unusual about this Maytag is that it has never been used. This A700 washer is quite common, we still see lots of them and it certainly is not worth $500. If it was a Kelvinator or a Philco sure, but not this. I would be very careful with this whole deal guys, I sounds like greed is now playing into all of this big time.

Oh Holy Pulsators - no! It's too bad, he probably should have just put it on ebay and let the market determine the price - honestly, fairly and with at least a bit of transparency. I would run the other direction from this guy - new/unused or not, it's still "just a Maytag" and there are still many out there that can be made like new with currently available parts. Don't be hoodwinked! |

Austin, you brought up an excellent point. If this machine *HAS* been setting for 40 years unused, what will the condition of the seals, etc. actually be? Greg, great statement about it still being 'just a Maytag.' Look at the beautiful older style pushbutton set you were able to restore. Then someone else on here posted a photo of two more. And look at how many Maytags have come up in my area in just the last 2 months. Robert, I agree that everyone should be very careful in dealing with someone who pulls a stunt like this. Buy through another club member or bid on eBay where the buyer has some protection. Greensburg is in my back yard. And there are/were *LOTS* of Maytag dealers in this area. The only good thing about this is the box of Tide *IF* it is in fact included with this washer. If the seller hits my site again, I'll still ignore him. I don't play games like this. |

get everyone in on this and retract all your bids at once today. Real value should = Real Price. I agree with Greg if the seller wants the highest price then put it out to auction publicly or have the kahones to say I want $500 bucks b/o right out there. There has to be too much "faith" on the seller's part doing it this way, thats the messy part of this. |

Looks like the chrome would need replated too. I can see the pitting in the photos. This machine would still need a lot of work to make it operational. May as well buy one that has been used for $50.00 and rebuild it. Same amount of work and $$$ to rebuild it, and would save at least $450.00 in the process......

Thank you and your website very much for allowing me to shift what I thought was worthless junk for allot of money with no over-head costs. The free advertising itself saved me the fees and expenses of dealing with an auction site like eBay,and again will not have to share the final price with anyone. While common courtesy would normally call for offering a token contribution to your website for it's efforts, you people seem to love vintage appliances, and therefore should take comfort in knowing this one is going to a good home instead of being put out for rubbish. Well cannot really say what sort of home it is going to, but it is out of mine and I made a decent profit, so that is that. Well must go now, our new big screen-HD-Plasma televison is being delivered (paid for in part or whole from the proceeds of selling the old junk washing machine), and have to get things ready before the game comes on. Thanks again for all your help, couldn't have done it without you. -------------------------------------------------------------- Now, what was it ToggleSwitch said about you can't s***** me unless I lay down first? Well it looks like the machine is sold... Robert, Not at any time had I envisioned that so many good folks would have an interest in our Maytag washing mashing. As a result of your efforts on our behalf, we were able to run a short and silent auction on the washer. It sold for $850. I can tell you that we are shocked to say the least. We had been planning to get ourselves a dish washer later in the year, but now, thanks to you and your organization, we will be able to get it much sooner. Heck, we may even get real crazy and pop for a new sink as well....... Many thanks to you and all of the fine people who participated in this most exciting event. I can honestly say that I will never look at a washing machine the same way again. Sincerest regards to you and all of your fine folks, John |

I've gotta say that this lady who didn't want to mess with her new automatic washer runs away with the title of most technologically challenged person of the millenium. No question in my mind that these people did not own a VCR, or if they did it's lying around NIB somewhere in that house too, and is far more obsolete at this stage than the A700.

It wasn't that the lady didn't want to use her new machines, just that hubby laid down the law and wouldn't install them and from the looks of things forbade anyone else to and or use of the units. Marriage and such was very different 40 some odd years ago,and for better or worse there were lots of women who knew just how far to push their husbands on cerian matters. IMHO marriage is like a war, one chooses one's battles carefully in order to prevent loosing gained territory! *LOL* L. |

But Laundress, in Robert's initial post it states that the husband gave the Mrs. this machine as a gift. It seems to me that she didn't want to learn it and kept on using her wringer machine instead, or at least that's what I thought somebody wrote somewhere above. Regardless, this is just one unusual machine that we've all been lucky enough to find out about. Imagine how many more treasures are out there that never find their way on line. You never know what's going to turn up out there and it's even less likely that there will be a story behind it but it's always interesting to speculate on why some of these machines have survived to provide enjoyment to people like us AW members! |

Depends how you look at it. What would it cost today to make this exact machine using the same high quality materials of yesteryear, not to mention labor? I would guess well over 2K. The quality and sturdiness that these machines exhibit don't exist in today’s world, no matter how much money you have. They simply don’t exist and probably never will again. |

Look at it this way, that washing machine was built to last the duration, and with proper care and use will easily outlast several current models. So do the sums, you can spend allot of money now, or spend it in dribs and drabs over the years on repairs and replacements. Considering Maytag as a separate company is history, and Whirlpool probably has no plans of reintroducing these models, MIB vintage units such as these are probably a "best buy". Now me? I like to get vintage units MIB or close to it so can get lots of use out of the appliance if am going to use it as a daily driver. There is also am not a super top level repair person and if something arrives needing little or no work to get it up and running, then it also saves me time and money. For those that are handy and can do their own restoration work, then a lesser priced machine which will need some work is probably a better deal. L. |

I agree. It's the venerable law of supply and demand. If these people can appreciate the value of such a vintage appliance and are blessed with the foresight to not throw it out (as many people even in my own family would have done)then a gesunt on them and they deserve every penny they realize. I keep my fingers crossed that there's a similar seller out there with a vintage almost NIB GE pair from the late fifties that I'll come across. I'll pay the price, only because I want it. and I'd appreciate it if they were petal pank, to match my retro American Standard bathroom. Otherwise, cadet blue. |
