Hi there Nikola

Candy machines, the proper ones anyway, seem to be quite scarce. A number of mates of mine had parents who owned Candy machines, but I can't for the life of me remember much about them - although I think one was a late 70's machine.
Pictures seem to be few and far between.
I am keeping an eye on this thread in the hope, like you, that some real gems will be posted.

The only two pics I have of candy machines are attached...

the grey machine is a Candy Domino 4x4 washer dryer (model WD38).
the black machine is a Candy Turbomatic 801 (was on ebay UK recently - I so hope someone saved it - an early 80's classic).

Plus this machine sold in Germany. This machine (or one similar) was sold in the UK as ModelD2.50 with an 800rpm spin speed

I grew up with a Candy machines, and, I had some before...but some of them was in SO bad condition, so I decided to throw them away. Now, I have a D4.109X, Aquamatic 3, WD28, WD39, 133, P8.61X, and a P5.03X. The one which I grew up with, was my aunts, and that was a D4.104X. I have the booklet some place here, but cant find it now.. Here the Washer/dryer models was named 'Alisé', not Turbomatic. The machines I threowed away, was a Alisé WD27, D4.60X, D4.82X, and a D4.109X, which I used for some years before it broke down.

Hi Tom

I think that that machine you have attached above could be one of those I remember as a kid - is the powder drawer handle a seperate piece of metal, which protrudes from the facia, rather than being a moulding? (can we have a bigger picture?)

Also a question on the Aquamatic 3. Am I right in thinking that the Aquamatics were the compact machines. If so, have you ever encountered the first Aquamatic - I am rather perplexed by the door!

I have a 'Which' consumer magazine report from 1976 with a line drawing of one and the door looks like it opens downwards!??! Some info on it:

could have the 'Heliomatic' dryer stacked on top of it
3kg wash load
spin speed 400rpm
detergent dispenser in the door
cotton wash was graded - FAIR
synthetic creasing was graded - MODERATE
overall noise was graded - ACCEPTABLE
spinning efficiency was graded - VERY POOR

Like Nikola, I would love to know more about 60s, 70s and 80s Candy machines.

Cheers
Paul

Candy Automatic 3

Hi everyone!
I'm from Italy, and I've been reading this pages for years. Now it's time to write, because this post calls me. I've a Candy Automatic 3 to restore, here attached you find a photo. Now she's completely disassembled in pieces, and I'm repairing and finding spare parts.
You all can see her in vintage tv commercials on candy website:

And, thank to a real friend, I've got one... I'll inform you about progress in restoration.
Bye
Rijk.

Hey matchboxpaul!

I really dont know anything about the machine on the pic I attached:P I found the pic on a norwegian site, but dont remember which.

My Aquamatic does 550rpm.
The aquamatic on the pic is'nt the one I have, because mine is in parts at the moment, because the 'spider' on the drum shaft is broken, but it's excactly like the one on the picture.

Stone old Aquamatic:

Post# 202751 , Reply# 13   4/10/2007 at 08:31 (6,225 days old) by filekar1 ()

Candy automatic 5, looks like Candy automatic 3, was the same that had my grandmother when I was young. It was an interesting washer, infact the programm dial under the little plastic cover it was strange.
to program the washer you must turn counter clockwise until the programm number that you choose, you must "take the number" than, u turn the dial clockwise until it stops.it was very strange.
Most interesting was the little candy aquamatic of the '70, that posts Timon90. Interesting was the detergent dispenser integrated into the door. Timon can you post some other pictures of this machine and detergent dispenser?
thanks

The difference between Automatic 3 and 5 is only a matter of kg load size. The drum is 5 cm deeper than A3’s, the heater is longer and maybe the motor more powerful, but all the rest is identical. Same programs and aesthetic. The timer is red, and the functioning you described is correct.
The version I have is without the detergent hole, which was under the blue cover, but removed after the first production model because it caused condensation problems on the timer. Here is a photo:

Hi Tom

Thanks for posting that picture of the Aquamatic version1. Like Filekar1 would love to see more pic of this machine.

It looks exactly like the machine which is in my 1976 copy of the consumer magazine 'Which' - that door mystery is definately solved.
Can any UK based members confirm whether the brown facia colour scheme was the same on UK sold machines?

A bit more info:

cold fill only
400rpm spin
stacks with Heliomatic MkII dryer (any images guys)

Once gain cheers for the pictures.
Paul

Candy D4.82X

aquarius1984's profile picture
TIMON!

Is that a 1000rpm model or 800rpm????

If its 1000rpm thats the Candy my Mum had 1988 to 1992!

2 bearing changes in its life, 1 at 12 months and one at 18 months shows just how crappy they were and now why Hoovers are so crappy.

The buttons should be Half load
On off and
Door release.

Temp dial went
*
30
40
50
60E
95

Featured the Inox "Stainless Formula" drum and should say 1000rpm on the right hand side of the fascia as the washer dryer Paul posted up the top from ebay about 3 months ago.

Only thing I really remember about the large programme dial which I think was even bigger than a Hotpoint dial was the Chlorine bleach triangle and "Z" the drain cycle LOL.
although the dial was really snappy and clicky.

Also in your example the drum was different. it was the Servis Rainwave lookalikey in the 109X above it.

Lots of memories sat in fron of that machine burning my hands on the door when it was boil washing my brothers nappies LOL!

I think.....

timon90's profile picture
I think your mum had a D4.104X, the same machine I grew up with. It's like the 82X, but had 1000rpm. My aunt had one! Remember it wery well! The dials are really nice! Candy used gears on the motor for MANY yers, and it was a great system! I'll take pics of the garsystem on my Alisé WD28(which I think I must throw away, because it's mouse eaten:( ) as soon as I can.

Candy is'nt crappy at all, you must just use it gently! I know peoples who still have Candy's from the 80's, and some of them have never been repaired on.

The Formula Inox is a feature, I never have seen on other machines. The outer tub is shaped like a egg! It should save more water and energy because of that. Dont know if it had any effect. I have a 90%complete service manual for the 'D4' series here, which I've got from a reapairman I know wery well. He's a real Candyman!:P He has sold and repaired Candy in many many years.

Fire ?

Im sure i recall that candy had a batch of faulty machines in the early 90s, one of which caught fire and actually killed a woman.

Post# 203310 , Reply# 20   4/12/2007 at 03:55 (6,223 days old) by timon90 (Norway)
Thats right

timon90's profile picture
That was because the Alisé WD28's missed a safety thermostat for overheating in the drying system. It was one or two fires caused by this, but they were called back, and got new thermostats. I know the guy who got the job to put on those thermostats in the entire Norway! He spend over a year doing this. He went all over the country. And it was ONLY ONE who did this in Norway, therefor it took pretty long time to get finished with a whole country.

well so far we have a pic of the Aquamatic 1 and, with the two below, three versions of the Aquamatic 3.
What did the Aquamatic 2 look like? Anyone?

Egg-shaped outer tubs...

Didn't one of the German manufacturers have such a feature? Bosch or AEG?

Candy Adverts...

Were there not adverts which featured "Candy - Can do" as the slogan?

I remember the pantomime-like dishwasher one with the Cinderella-type skivvy and the ugly sisters (early 1990's). Something like:

Cinderella despairing at cluttered kitchen.

UGLY SISTERS: "We want all these dishes done, for when we return for lunch at One."

Ugly sisters depart; Fairy Godmother appears and zaps up the Candy. Kitchen left in a clean condition; Cinderella ecstatic:

"Candy - Can do", sung as the tagline.

Just discovered a picture of a Candy Alise 16WD - never heard of 'formula inox' before...

Candy formula inox

formula inox is just what stands for " stainless formula" ! I had one of these. It didn't wash nor dry very well... The "egg shaped" tub is not only a feature found on Candy machines. Miele had (i don't know if still has it...) on their series 700/800/900 machines. I do not understand where the claimed Candy water saving is. In my opinion if you have the bottom part of the tub farer from the drum then you need to have more water to reach the drum itself, isn't it? The more water you have to heat the more is the consumption... There must be not obvious reasons to make such shaped tubs...
