Am I crazy??

Checkrate/Likes Right... well seeming as in my bedroom there is dead space, I have been getting ideas recently about what to do with it. Soooo... I've been seriously thinking about getting a second washer to go alongside my AEG washer/dryer already in my bedroom. So I'm hoping to get a Miele W526 when I have sufficient funds in about a month's time. Now, does anybody else think it's a crazy idea? 'Cos when I brought up the subject with my dad, he kinds gave me the raised eyebrow look... But I still think I should do it anyway, what does everyone else think? Checkrate/Likes Thumbs up for me.I saw the machine at a local dealership and was so impressed but here the price is $2800.

Checkrate/Likes *TOL machines only* That's because we're all assumed to be "reeech Americanos" and will pay top dollar because it's "European", sort of the same principle where in Germany a Mercedes is "just another car" and here it's "revered".

Checkrate/Likes Jaune, The exact opposite works here, and American toploaders are advertised as (get this!!) more energy efficient and larger load capacity. When in the US it is the opposite, with the front loaders "more energy efficient" and having a "larger" load capacity. Oh the joys of marketing... Personally I don't think either machine/style is superior to each other; they all do their jobs at the end of the day. Jon

Checkrate/Likes Perhaps it would be interesting for us to start doing our own standardized comparisons and posting the results here. What I suspect will happen is that different types, makes, and models, will each have conditions under which they excel, and conditions under which they don't do as well as others. This could become really valuable advice for potential buyers, i.e. who could compare based on the sets of conditions that most closely approximated their own.

Checkrate/Likes I say go for it, lad! The only thing better than one washer in your bedroom is two of them. Besides, if your dad is anything like mine was, he'll be raising an eyebrow at you many, many times over the course of your life.

Checkrate/Likes *good idea designgeek* I was wondering how these modern dishwashers,european design in particular, would wash with one of the older bleach type dw detergents.I know from reading CU a few years back,that the newer enzyme type products raised the cleaning of poor scoring dishwashers. The more i am hearing reports about how people are very pleased with their Bosch dishwashers,the more i am being swayed toward considering one in the future. Austin/Venus,how long does your new Bosch take on the normal cycle? When i was in Sears a few days ago,i had a chance to see the KM Elite (Bosch made)dw in action,opening the door i could see the spray was pretty powerful.The quietness was impressive too.You had to stand right next to it to hear it.

I suspect the "capacity wars" is what killed off the first generation of FL and combo machines here in the US. During the period when Westinghouse was the only US comapny that still made FL machines, I remember Consumer Reports main complaint other than a poor Frequency of Repair Record was the capacity vs most TL machines

Checkrate/Likes *The pro's and con's of uk and us models!* Have to say I spent a year in Mexico and was really excited to find my apartment had a combi Fridgidaire washer dryer installed.... It was shortlived! Stain removal was very poor on whites and that was even after using warm soak and prewash and then hot refular cycle.... pretreating the stain and extra rinsing. The uk models, in my opinion are MUCH better as they start the main wash with cold water then use the internal heater to set the correct temp. I have an AEG LAvamat Turbo waher dryer and with the use of the stain button, my whites are perfect every time. The internal heater heats the wash water to about 45# and maintains it there for a set period of time. it then heats the water to the selected temp which allows stain removal products to work to their maximum potential! Well it makes sense to me!!! HAve to say though, i really thought the top loaders were good for lightly soiled items and colours so long as you selected the second rinse option and didnt wash a "Full load" If anyone is thinking about the purchase of a European machine, do it! you wont be disappointed. The only drawback is the time it takes to wash a 6KG load..... with mine on a 60# hot cottons wash, 145 minutes!! Happy Laundering!! Peter

Checkrate/Likes Peter, I already have an AEG Oko_Lavamat washer - I must admit I do love the extra long Energy Saving cycle - is great for whites. That 147 min wash (on mine :-D) works wonders on whites. But for normal loads, I tend to use the quickest Time Saver option, and it can wash a load of coloureds etc. at 40C with 3 rinses in 63 mins. BTW for anything other than whites (etc sheets), I use the 80 min 60C programme, and that works wonders aswell! What model washer do you have? I have an Oko_Lavamat 86741 - it's one of the higher end models with the chrome door and interior light :-). Jon

Checkrate/Likes *NIce one!* Hi Jon, We have the Lavamat Turbo 16810 1600 rpm Washer dryer. Most of our washing is done on cottons 60, 40 and the 40* easy iron! This is a truly amazing cycle as most of the shirts come out virtually crease free. It does exactly what it says on the tin!!!!! I read in Which that the AEG doesnt score highly for rinsing but I found it great!!!! (what do they know????) The dryer is very fast but due to the fact i do a lot of washing, (my partner thinks I am obsessed, what does he know!!!!!) I bought a condenser dryer also. Candy....... Keep away, it is rubbish! By the way I am sure you know about this but have you had a look at the AEG website? You can look at and download all the brochures for them and AEG from as far back as they have been producing them..... Some of the older machines were amazing back then and the manuals make very interesting reading. Also good for people thinking about buying an AEG so they can get a feel for the programmes on offer!
