Isn't It Amazing?

How well things hold up if they're cared for?

It seems to be a fact of life- most people just don't take care of things. So many of my treasures have come from thrift stores, and as grateful as I am to have found them, I have sometimes been more than a little irate at their condition as-found. Do people spend their weekends beating the hell out of their stuff?

Ah well. At least I've learned an awful lot about repair and restoration...

And the interior...definitely looks like a well-maintained, low-mileage machine.

Nice machine

What is the box sitting on the open door? (It looks like a transistor radio printed circuit board).

the radio looking gizmo is the detergent dispenser.

Well as far as cleaning, it was one of the "better" cleaning impeller dishwahers, but nothing extroadinary. Hotpoints, because theyw ere a little better, were very popular in the 1950s.

See the little red cap on the right under the lower rack? That was the opening to the rinse agent dispenser that made "Spotless" dishes. That machine is in great shape, but it does not look like it was used heavily, either.

Growing up, we had that exact same dishwasher, it is the deluxe model. It works really well and was one of the better dishwashers of it's time. I remember it is a bit noisy, but cleans well, due to the double washes and double rinses. Durning the dry cycle, the impeller spins to aid in the drying of the dishes. I still have the original instruction booklet from that machine. What ever you do, don't get rid of it, because you will miss it.

They had rinse aid back then? Wouldn't have guessed. When I was a child, in the early '60s, hardly anyone we knew had a dishwasher.

Is that black thing in the front left corner of the lower rack a silverware basket?

Nice dishwasher, all of the applianes in that house look new! The DW rack system looks nearly identical to the basket case top loading 1949 GE DW I found a few months ago with the 1948 Servel fridge. BTW - I'm going to part the DW - I have all racks and the motor (condition unknown) if anyone is interested.

I just checked the motor and it is full of water and frozen up - so its no good. The racks need cleaning but are all there.

Double washes led to the need for a closed two-cup detergent

IIRC Hotpoint was one of the first (if not THE first) to do

W-W-R-R, which helped its performance immensely.

Note the metal baffle in the left front corner of the lower rack. With the silverware basket there, plates could not go in that corner and the impeller rotates counter-clockwise. I wonder if the baffle was needed to keep water from being forced out between the door and tank. I think I remember that the one I have would leak a bit if the machine was operated without the silverware basket in place.

The black ring in the center of the rack with the wire circle above it held the silverware cup in GE DWs. The "teeth" or square ridges on the inside of the circle formed the wash evenizer which kept a steady but diffused shower of water going upward in all 360 degrees of the spray pattern.

Certainly I can take a close up. What's an impeller?

The impeller is the black plastic fan-blade-shaped item in the bottom-center of the tub, under the bottom rack.

Detergent Dispenser

Nice pictures! Are the dispenser cups bigger or smaller than what you would typically find on a present day dishwasher?

Smaller. They seem to hold maybe 1 to 1.5 Tbsp.
