Anybody know why my belt drive pump is siphoning water during the wash cycle. seems to me like the flapper in the pump is not sealing. I replaced the old pump with a new one and the new one does the same thing, just not nearly as badly. Any ideas? I'd really appreciate it!

Jon

Was it a new new one or a new old one? Rubber, etc has a shelf life. Is the actuating lever traveling fully?

I think the rubber shelf-life is the issue here if I were guessing. I noticed the new pump I put in was 10 years old. I would imagine that rubber does better if it's wet ever so often, but not the case with these ones. I ordered another new pump and will get it on Tuesday and do this ALL OVER AGAIN!!! GRRRR!!!!

btw the lever works fine.

Check your drain pipe, if your washer hose is too far down it, it will syphon the water down the drain when the machine starts to agitate.

the hose is raised as it should be. siphoning only occurs when the machine is washing and the pump is engaged.

You may have got hold of another bad pump. Normally on BD machines, there is a short blast of water out the drain hose as the machine shifts into agitate and closes the port on the pump. But before you condemn the pump, check these items again.

I agree with Westytoploader's post in another thread about lubrication of the cam bars, especially since it hasn't been used in a while.

I would also look at the pump and the agitate solenoid/cam bar and make sure they are not binding up because of some foreign matter, lack of lubricant, a bent pin or a bent cam bar. Also check the cam bar spring (the spring that holds both cam bars to the transmission) and make sure it is tight.

There was one other thing that came to my mind, but, upon realizing you have a portable, would not apply. Sometimes, on full-size BD machines that have self-cleaning non-basket mounted filters, the side check valve gets stuck, causing some really interesting situations.

ok thanks a bunch for those pointers. I'll pull it apart tomorrow and double check. Everything looked really good when I changed out the pump. Nothing seemed out of place or bent. something tells me I have another bad pump, but until the next one comes I'll check everything else just to be sure.

NLA

Just FYI...I tried to order another pump from Sears and found out that belt-drive pumps are apparently no longer available from Whirlpool. Add that to the NLA list since I'm sure those will become harder to find. And I'm having a hard time just finding a good one that works!!!

side check valve?

Could it also be the check valve on the side of the machine isn't sealing and sending water down the drain instead of thru the filter? I know on my KM when it was draining it was pushing water into the tub and after replacing the check valve it stopped doing that. Its a different problem than yours but just thought I'd mention it =)

UPDATE

I am so happy!!! To make a long story longer, I ordered a few pumps for this machine in hopes that I would get lucky with one. Finally got them in today and did a switchout. Thank goodness this one works!!! No more siphoning!

Thanks for all the help guys!
