Have since aquired a nice vintage Whirlpool 24" portable and couldn't be more thrilled. The Hoover and Maytag units are nice, don't get me wrong, but parts are NLA and damn hard to find from secondary sources. At least with the Whirlpool, though NLA from WP, parts are still in stock at Sears and other places. L. |

Yes, the portable 110v dryer market in the United States is really between two makers: Whirlpool (who also builds Kenmore), and GE. Other than the fact Whirlpool models have the lint screen in back, versus GE's in the front/door (for awhile GE Spacemaker's did have the lint screen in back, but switched back to front recently), all pretty much perform the same. Find the older "vintage" 110v/portable dryers have higher watts in heating power than today's offerings, 1450 watts instead of 1200 or so, which makes a small difference in terms of drying performance. Older models also tended to be made of more metal, and built to last versus today's offerings. My Whirlpool has a nice heavy metal cabinet, and even closing the door makes a nice solid feel. Looked at today's offerings at local appliance store and it was mainly plastic and very light weight by comparaison. If you really are chucking your old dryer, by all means put a listing up on your local Craigslist as "free if you pick it up". Many young familes and or elderly persons would love a nice compact dryer in good condition, for free or a good price. Today's offerings cost dear and are no where near the same in quality. L. |
