After letting the '63 Lady K dryer be a total tart with a couple of other machines (the 1-18, and the Filter-Flo), I decided she needed to demonstrate a little fidelity and go back to the arms of the one with whom she was meant to be.

Translation: I finally got off my butt and hauled the '63 washer in. 'Twas time.

So, here they are, together again, at last...

Here we go...

First off, for those who decry the unfairness of seeing lots of washer and not much dryer, let's look at the dryer, shall we? :-)

Dryer in-depth

roto204's profile picture
The control is for Maximum Auto Dry--on, or off. You can adjust it with a Bakelite pointer in the back of the machine in case auto-dry is too dry or not dry enough.

Usually I flip it on for jeans or towels. 99.97% of the time, everything's just perfect when it comes out of the dryer, anyhow.

There is no end-of-cycle signal.

Lint screen

roto204's profile picture
At least they're forthright enough to call it a Lint Screen and not the daft "Lint Storage" (as on the '71). "Lint Storage"? Like I'm saving it for later?

Anyhow, here's the filter and the freshener bottle. The filter is short (only about 8" or so--hush, Toggle), stiff metal wire mesh, and has an incredible amount of felt around the edge to seal it.

The timer gives you timed drying, air fluff, or Automatic. Automatic has only one denotation--"Set." Set it and forget it. None of this More Dry/Less Dry stuff--you. shall. learn. to. trust. the. dryer! This is a Lady Kenmore!

Inside

roto204's profile picture
The SuperRotoTinkle™ clothes sprinkler. Or, the "little pisser," as Greg christened it. ;-)

Either that, or you can put Jet-Dry in there, and have spotless clothes.

Reminds you of a D&M dishwasher, doesn't it? :-)

Due to my waning ironing, I haven't used the sprinkler yet. But I like the idea...

The drum. The vanes are only slightly pronounced, but I guess you don't need much. As I noticed when I had the top off after replacing the belts, this baby hauls! I don't know how those kids that go for rides in the dryer do it without honking afterward.

I like the blue-speckled white porcelain drum.

The washer

roto204's profile picture
This has been posted before, but with more glam lighting :-)

The washer's a little further along than the dryer, but nothing that a fresh coat of paint can't cure. At least the porcelain (in every location) is niiiiice.

The machine sprays a LOT--which pits the chrome, and Steven thinks the previous owner was a big washer-watcher, so the paint in the front is worn thin. But, definitely fixable :-)

Matched sets are seriously starting to grow on me--like a fungus. Just ask Greg :-)

I didn't realize how much I needed the two turquoise machines in the laundry room, side-by-side. Now, I don't know how I could have separated them. Turquoise is, as Terry noted, such a wonderful, cool color. And, since today crested 103º, it was appreciated :-|

I also wish the dials lit up--I really couldn't believe there wasn't a bulb back there until I went hunting. What on Earth was Kenmore thinking?? :-|

After living with our '60 KM pair for so many years, I'd really tired of KM/WP's. Now I think they're absolutely cool, especially the late 50's/early 60's machines. A great pair, Nate! And all lit up like McDonald's, too.

Hi Nate, wow the turquoise '63 Lady Kenmore set looks great together again! I didn't realize that they were still doing a porcelain dryer drum as late as 1963.

And YAY for witchcraft, it's so much easier to use witchcraft to uninstall, move and install a new washer and dryer set than by doing it the mortal way, much easier on the back!

Gorgeous!

Those '63 LKs had the best looking console designs IMHO.

One question. I notice it has the skinny Super Roto Swirl. Is that the original agitator? I thought that Kenmore models of the aforementioned year still had the pregnant version.

Good Luck,
James

SuperRotoTinkle--------

LMAO!!!!!!!! Nate you're 'killin me first thing this morning!

A beautiful set. Those old Whirly/'Kenmo dryers were really good machines and designed to dry FAST. (No surprise given the lame extraction capabilities of their matching washers!) I never paid any attention to the cycle settings---never noticed the "set" vs more-less dry. Interesting.

And about the lid on the washer----back in the day I remember a lot of people who would start the machine (water spraying everywhere)----and then they would begin to sort the laundry----tossing items into the machine as they went along, answer the telephone, etc. By the time they were finnished the machine would be half-way through the wash cycle by then! That is why the paint on Frigidaire consoles is always such a mess----what with all the detergent/bleach water splashing about. (I have a '61 WCI that has most of its console paint eaten away----a shame---- as the rest of the machine is in beautiful shape.)

Thanks for sharing----what a nice pair!

Thanks, guys! :-D

Greg -- I think everyone was amazed at the minty-fresh condition -- Me too! I guess getting a Sears service contract on new machines was a tremendous idea!

Toggle -- turquise tart(s) -- I love it. I think that'll be their new name. :-P

Eugene -- Now I think they're absolutely cool, especially the late 50's/early 60's machines -- My fascination comes and goes. I like the color, mostly. I've worked on (torn apart) by myself more Kenmores than any other brand, and I think that familiarity breeds contempt. But, this machine has been doing nice things like not leaking and not generally annoying me, so my affection is beginning to return :-)

Ross -- can't wait to come over and see it in action -- Definitely! I think the albs will come out beautifully, and we can even experiment with the dryer sprinkler before ironing! :-D

Steven -- 900's wanted to see their older cousins...So glad you got the machines workin good and I do love the 900's VERY much -- *the Lady Ks wave giddily* Hi back to the 900s!! :-D I'm so glad you enjoy those--they definitely went to the perfect home :-) And, CONGRATULATIONS on rectifying the performance issues and getting them into top-notch shape! Next, you'll be ready to reoperate your Unimatic!

Robert -- YAY for witchcraft -- You got that right!! :-D My other option was to move the GE and Kenmore with a cheap dolly that has two flats, and then to fanagle the GE up a foot-high ledge into the storage shed. I certainly would never have tolerated that. Only witchcraft from now on! :-P

BTW, there's a Flair 40" for sale here in Tucson. Would my powers increase if I had it? ;-)

Graham -- one of the more showy sets i've seen -- I love the "multicolor filmstrip" effect and the tub light, even if the latter makes me have to unplug the washer when I'm done :-) Oh, and speaking of beautiful, I LOVE your dryer collection--you have great taste, and you can never have too many of any of these things so long as there is at least one outlet or gas line in the house :-D (Rotate, rotate, rotate!)

Terry -- Don't you just love that little filtering light -- Yes, and when it burns out, all filtering stops, so you have to keep on top of it ;-) I like having the self-cleaning filter (and it sure as heck beats toothbrushing off a Kenmore waterfall filter, or whacking the hell out of my 1-18 bed o' nails, so yay for maintenance-free :-) ).

Terry, you have to take credit on this one--remember, I wasn't going to keep the set together, initially (*sound of shocked gasps*) ;-)

James -- the skinny Super Roto Swirl. Is that the original agitator -- I don't know, maybe one of our Sears Cataloguers could tell us for sure. If it is, the change-over must have happened very close to '62 or '63, because my '61 had the preggers Roto Swirl. This agitator, however, has a lot to suggest that it is original--its wear and lack of gloss is age- and use-appropriate, and it's made of Bakelite and molded for the drive-block design.

Steve R. -- old Whirly/'Kenmo dryers were really good machines and designed to dry FAST -- I *totally* agree, and love these dryers, too. They're hard to beat, no matter the washer. And you're right about the lame extraction :-P (Furthermore, as I was posting the pics last night, I heard a weird sound, and had to shoo the cat out of my lap to go investigate--it was the infamous Kenmore stop-and-buzz due to an out-of-balance load. Sheesh.)

It is a shame about splashy/spraying water and control panels--when I used my 1-18, it was a wipe-a-thon, and it amazes me that anything survives with an intact control panel at all. I guess it must be a testament to Little Old Ladies and their propensity to wipe everything with a soft cloth after use--and, well, probably never watch the washer run...but what's the fun in that?? :-)

thirtyater -- My family thought I was nuts. -- Mine too. I also remember that the fabric-softener dispensers that perched atop the belt-drive, Dual Action washers scared me when I was little.

Whenever I wanted a fun day, I asked my parents to go by Sears so I could play and look at everything. Thank goodness for accommodating and understanding parents :-) I remember going nuts when Brand Central was introduced...

fa_f3_20 -- Can you still get that dryer freshener stuff? What was in that stuff anyway? Not sure on either account. I don't think you can get it unless you find NOS stuff. It's just attached to a tube that goes down to the top-back of the drum, so I've no idea as to the liquid's composition...

Drum Light

cycla-fabric's profile picture
Very nice matching pair you have there, question though on the dryer, being that the dryer is pretty much tol, it looks like it should also have an ozone bulb in it, as there is a spot for one just below the drum light. Does the dryer have a fixture there for one? If it does try to get an ozone bulb for it.

No-zone

roto204's profile picture
Hi Doug,

There's only one socket back there, and the light runs when you open the door, so I'm pretty sure it's just a run-of-the-mill drum light. At least, it was a regular appliance bulb that I took out of it when I replaced it.

No additional sockets, unfortunately, and I tore it all apart to clean it when I did the belts, so I poked around quite a bit.

Although, it is odd that the drum light runs when the machine is drying...weird! Does anyone have any idea if that's the expected behavior? :-)

Drum Light On When Drying

cycla-fabric's profile picture
Hi Nate,
I remember a Kenmore dryer we had growing up, it had to be from around 1960 or so with a lighted dial 3 cycles and 6 temperatures, and it had a drum light and ozone light inside, and when the dryer was on so were the lights. So it must have been a common thing for them to be on when running. Again nice machines enjoy them!
