Dear Friends:

I just got back from my long awaited family visit in California during which I work on my parent's A806 washer and DG410 dryer. I am ashamed, I guess, to admit that I was looking forward to those projects ALMOST as much as I was to seeing my relatives.

Back in St. Louis, I log onto this site and what do I see but an entire gaggle of A806s! I'm telling you, its just plain spooky.

Steven I am particularly in awe of the thorough and meticulous job you did on your machine.

The A806 has been in service in my folks laundry room since it was purchased, new in 1978 and the dryer, since it was new around 1982. Taking either machine "off-line" for more than a few hours was not an option. I really wish I did have the time, space and resources to do a complete rebuild like you did, Steven.

I read in a recent post that plugging up the holes in and under the upright section of the agitator, then filling it with boiling water can make it easier to remove said agitator from its mounting. Unfortunately, this exercise was in vain. I was unable to remove the agitator without breaking it. It did not really need to remove it for what I had planned, but I did want to be able to do so, just the same.

I replaced:

The starter for the backlight in the control panel
The fill valve (thereby vastly increasing the fill speed)
The poly pump
Both belts
The four foot pads (doused first in boiling water to make them flexible enough to mount)

I added grease to the motor glides as best I could without disassembling the motor mount. Yes, I used the special motor glide grease.

I cleaned the insides of 29 years of dust and drips, and I am pleased to announce that there was no evidence whatsoever of oil leakage from the transmission.

The dryer got a new belt and exhaust ducting and was relieved of MOUNTAINS of lint found on just about every internal surface and the innards of the fan chamber.

Aparently, the ceramic igniter assembly is EXTREMELY fragile. It did not at all like being tapped, ever so gently, by the crevice tool of my vacuum cleaner. To my extreme relief, it was in-stock at a nearby parts counter, so, $29.99 later, we were back in business.

That dryer has, for oh, about twenty years, been producing a rhythmic ticking sound when in operation. I found nothing loose or out of alignment on either side of the motor (fan or pulley assemblies). I was resigned to not being able to solve this minor mystery. Then, a few days later, when using the machine for its intended purpose, I noticed that one of the three drum baffles was a little bit loose!!! Sure enough, when I tightened those two bolts, that twenty year old ticking disappeared.

And that is the end of my story.

Yours,

Marty Kaplan
