Just found out Glenn is in hospital due to a severe, probably viral, ear infection. Discovered when he woke up yesterday morning.

I have never had any sort of earache, but remember when Dennis had one that hurt so bad he was crying (went straightaway to the emergency room that time!) Horrible and nasty! Hope you are getting the fine care you deserve Glenn!

Glenn should be in a room by this afternoon. It's a viral infection. Dr. says he will have some permanent hearing loss. Tests later will indicate to what degree the loss is. Will be there through the weekend.

I just got home and Oh my God, Glenn

mickeyd's profile picture
This is so sad and shocking for me, because just the other day--I think it was Wednesday--Glenn sent me the longest coolest most satisfying e-mail I have ever received. It was the equivalent of a five page essay on the Fisher Paykel machines, all his wonderful articulate and oh-so-smart descriptions of the two available machines. It was unbelievable. I was in awe of it, and then he asked me if I wanted to know something in particular, and I immediately e-mailed him. But he didn't answer, and because he is so responsible and classy, and off-the-charts exceptional, I knew something was up. And Sweet Jesus, the tome that he sent me may be the last thing he did before he fell ill.

Here's an idea of what he's dealing with. My brother, Pete, you may have seen him in Robert's picture thread on Memorial Day, was shot in the face at the end of the Viet Nam War, the bridge of his nose laterally eviscerated. He's fine now, Old Norge War horse that he is, but he insists that getting shot in the face was less painful than a viral ear infecttion wich he also suffered over there.

So our poor buddy is in agony, and we need to send every loving healing salutory thought we can for our magnificent genius Glenn DO-DADS as I lovingly love to call him.

Get well soon, Glenn.

Re hearing loss: I have tinnitus, a constant ringing noise in the ears, caused by an adverse reaction to some medication about 10 years ago. It also caused slight hearing loss at some frequencies.

The ONLY thing I have found that helps is Ginkgo Biloba tablets. (herbal) It works by stimulating blood flow to the inner ear regions - it opens up the blood vessels in the area. As soon as he is well enough to, I would suggest Glenn tries taking some premium brand Ginkgo Biloba tablets, 2000 or 2500 mg tablet 3 times daily. This can help stimulate healing and repair by keeping a good flow of oxygenated blood to the area.

I have experimented with cheaper brands, but they have no effect, whereas the premium brands (in AU, Herron and Blackmores brands are good) have a definite improvement.

Inner ear infections can affect your sense of balance too, which is very disconcerting.

Best wishes.

Chris.

Thanks, everyone, for the wishes & concern!

Home as of Monday evening.

I have a sudden "failure" of nerve function to the right middle ear, possibly due to a viral inner ear infection. It wasn't painful like a typical ear ache. But Lawdy, it was awful. No pre-indictions. 5 AM everything normal. Woke up ~6:30 AM drenched in a cold sweat, extreme nausea. Thought it was food poisoning. Then noticed right ear was wrong/ringing and the room spinning when I tried to get up, knew it was something else. Solenoid -> Spin Trip Shaft -> 1140 RPM thirty seconds later -> Roll, Pitch, and Yaw. Next thought was a stroke. Crawled to phone, called 911. Right ear now completely dead. Had no idea of the time, thought maybe 10 AM. Tried calling RJ @ work, misdialed to another local business I call regularly (same digits, different order). Screw it, lay on floor, wait for EMS, hope they arrive soon. Had managed to unlock back door for them to get in, told dispatcher on phone. Of course, the Doofuses were knocking at the front. They came around back, I looked up, saw RJ looking in, wondered "Hmmmm, who called him???" (It was a few mins before 7 AM so he hadn't yet left for work.)

They hauled me to the ER, where I promptly vomited three times, missing the barf-bag each time. The ER girlie got a little miffed at having to do three consective clean-ups/gown changes. Sorry, sweetie, trying to aim but it just ain't working. (Really, the ER people were great.) They did a CAT scan, determined it was not a stroke. Muscle response was normal, no confusion on name, phone numbers, DoB, etc. Just extreme vertigo and dead ear. However, EKG showed a cardiac arrhythmia, which concerned the ER doctor more than the rest of the symptoms/conditions. Could be a reaction to the situation, or to the anti-nausea drug they tried administering.

My doctor has admission privileges at hospital in the next town, so there I went. They were short on beds so I was put in IC for the 1st day. Geeze, no rest in there for the weary. Too much noise & lights. And of course the poking & prodding every few hrs. Did best I could. Bad afternoon & night, for sure. Brief word of advice: I do not recommend under normal circumstances having a foley catheter installed while conscious.

Anyway, it's starting to settle down. MRI showed nothing of note. Still no hearing in right ear, and it may come back fully or to a lesser degree, or it may not. Have an audiologist appt tomorrow. On a Prednisone regimen, which may or may not help. Also back on BP med (Toporal/metoprolol) (which I had kinda quit taking couple months ago) and added Digitek. It's a matter of regaining balance/orientation. Longer I sit/stand/up-around, more the right ear goes to buzzing/ringing. Very irritating. Not much appetite. How much would YOU want to eat after being on a Tilt-a-Whirl for three days? But a couple incidents of humor ... like picking up phone to make a call and hearing nothing, wondering why is the damn phone dead?? Try phone in other room, same thing. Then I realize what I'm doing ...... :-D

Hugz to all!

What an experience, I am sorry. I bet it is a viral or fugal infection it seems to have come on so quickly! I hope thats what it is for you and not the BP.
Ask the Audiologist about fungal/yeast infections as well, you are in the season for it right now.

Get well soon I bet looking at a tub spinning is NOT something you want to do right now.

Sorry that you are having that. Seems like you are on the mend though, I'll keep praying for ya.

Glenn, you take charge of the situation. Dont let the body tell you what is going to transpire or happen.

Glad you are home in your beautiful clean comfortable home. You can make it go from there. Jeff and I are pulling for ya!

PS. are the 906's safe and sound?

Call me if we can help. We can come to Texas.

Steve

Glenn,

Yukky! That must be miserable. Hope it mends up soon. I'm sure one of the guys around here can send you a new out of balance switch to replace that faulty one!

Thanks for the tip no the Foley catheter - it sounds positively awful!

Peter's right, we should be able to outfit you with a shiny new out-of-balance switch without much trouble. Would you like one with a buzzer or one that makes the timer dial pop out? ;-)

Take care and thanks for the update, I'm sure you're going to pull through just fine!

Audiologist exam came up with zilch. No specific diagnosis for cause. No specific treatment, wait, see what the Prednisone does, if anything. (Increased hair growth is a possible side effect, could be interesting, ha!) Couple suggestions regarding hearing aids, which I don't see a need for that at this point. One involves a titanium skrew to the skull (for bone conduction) -- no thanks, I've already been done by a nurse with a catheter.

I'm adjusting to the balance issues. Drove to town (with dad) for a couple errands. Went to SP3 myself tonight. Still not much appetite when I think about eating ... but no problem if I just sit down and do it. Had a BIG nice tuna salad @ Uptown Grill this afternoon.

By the way, if anybody has sent e-mail and gotten no response ... mail service apparently is wonky for the last week or so. Maybe it has been passing through my right ear ....

The 906s are resting comfortably in my garage, as usual. :-)
