Don (jetaction) and I drove up to Geoff’s (geoffdelp) house in Foley which is about 75 minutes north of downtown Minneapolis on Saturday to take part in his 1964 Maytag’s maiden wash load! We all had such a nice time and Geoff has a beautiful home. His collection of wringer washers is just incredible, each one is in more mint condition that then next.

I took the video camera so we could film the maiden wash. To say Geoff's brand new Maytag A700S is BEAUTFUL is a HUGE understatement. It is just amazing to see a vintage washer that’s never been used before, and the smells are incredible, like it is right out of the factory!

Thanks again Geoff, I’m looking forward to coming up again soon.

Here are the videos:

target=_blank>Trip to Foley, Part I
highlights the Maytag and its very first wash load with clothes!

target=_blank>Trip to Foley, Part II
Geoff demonstrates the Suds-Return, then gives us a tour of his wringer washers. At the end both Don and Geoff make me use a very strange clothes dryer, for the life of me I could not figure out how to turn it on!

Well, where is the damn softener dispenser then??

Robert, you didn't read the Owner's Manual that came with that dryer did you?

Congrats on the amazing find, Geoff, you deserve it and I know it will look just like the day it left the factory for the rest of it's life!

What Great videos. I loved it all wish I was their. I had never knew anyone that used a suds return. It was nice to see the action. Also nice to use a brand new Maytag from a era when things were made real well.
Best Wishes
Peter

LMAO Oh if this were not on the www I would just have to make some funny comments, although not as funny as some of Robert's comments! Got to be the gaaaaayest washer films ever to hit YouTube.

Oh, and Geoff's "poking" stick was toooo funny. Georgedon found some "wands" in the toy department of a store and bought each of us one. Too festive! Anyway, those "pokers" do come in handy for those pesky air bubbles.

Geoff you certainly have a fabulous collection of 'Tags.

Thanks guys, for making my Monday morning.

Sweeeet!!!!!

Congrats on that phat, mint, Maytag, that's when maytags were maytags, so great to see a vintage washer like being put to good use today. Just one question how in the world did you fall upon a piece like that? Sweeeet!!!

very cool!

Looks like a great machine, I'd never seen a suds-saver work!

Don't feel bad Robert, I've never used one of those dryers either!

What Can I Say ...

... except that we had a WONDERFUL time! Those two guys are real clowns; my laundry room will never be the same ... of which I am SO glad about!!! :-)

Thank you both so very much for coming; I'm still chuckling to myself over the washer antics.

Robert ... thank you posting these videos; what a hoot!! I love the tangling sequence; it's a classic ... complete with the buzzer and the "oh, oh" sounds.

Robert is a HUGE Frigidaire fan; he was very tolerant of my Maytag "stuff". Don is just as funny ... such a great sense of humor in both of them; I'm sure a lot of stuff made it to the cutting room floor!!

My sheets got dry, BTW; it's a doggoned good thing my "tighty-whities" weren't sent to the line to dry. HEAVENS ... they probably would have been all over the yard and garden. What WOULD the neighbors say???

Oh; we DID use the vintage Oxydol on a final load of towels with fresh hot water. Some of the fragrance was still there but it took THREE ... yes, three ... rinses to get all of the detergent out. BOY ... those vintage detergents really made long lasting suds; my water is fairly soft in the laundry room, too.

I'm going to work on removing the wonderful label. I'll try the blow dryer technique first; someone from here recommended that.

THANKS AGAIN Don and Robert ... I had a terrific time; let's do it again!! :-)

Geoff

Geoff----

You can get huge wide razor-blades new at Home Depot or Lowe's -----usually in the paint department. Should be perfect to peel that label right off. Just have your piece of cardboard or whatever you are going to mount in on ready as it will want to roll up on you.

I wish I could see films like that every morning!
Wonderful!

And now the grand treat of the evening will be to watch the videos. I can hardly wait, and I'm dying with excitement to see if the sud-return operates at the normal speed, which means the pump will be operating at "all ahead FULL" regarding the impeller. This so exciting!! Part of the pleasure of aging is delayed gratification. So later tonight, after the Newshour and a few chores, when everything is perfect, and I'm all settled in, it will be time for your masterpiece. Thank you so much for what is sure to become a totally orgasmic evening. It'll be spectacular !!! Woo-woo ! Woo-woo ! Woo-woo !

Your friend,

Mike

I must be behind the times. We have a '98 Maytag w/ suds-saver which we use all the time. My Mom has always had washers with them. Our family has always hung our laundry outside as well, weather permitting. I love the feeling of being able to cheat the electric & gas companies.

P.S. Mom had a '67 Filter-Flo w/ suds return, '82 Filter-Flo w/ suds return, and a '97 Maytag w/ suds saver.

What fun to see these videos! Geoff, if you wash in a wringer on any of Robert's visits, based on his clothesline performance, perhaps he should only observe, rather than participate in, its operation. He's made it this long with his limbs intact, would be a shame to change that now. (LOL)

Perhaps I can talk the two of them into repeating the trip with me when I visit in September.

I can't stop laughing!!

It looks like the three of you had a blast. Thanks for sharing.

What an awesome machine. That's the first time I saw a suds saver in action. What a fascinating system.

Who would have thought that Maytag would have installed such an easy-to-override safety switch! (If ONLY they all could be that way. I agree with Robert -- there should be no hidden cycles!)

Mike

Great videos, guys! I had to wait til I went home for lunch to watch them---YouTube is blocked at work. I laughed at the clothesline episode because I was wondering what dryer existed that Robert wouldn't know how to operate, LOL.

Great Maytag---and new, to boot. I love how far up the water comes on the agitator. Many happy, carefree loads to you.

Oh, what wonderful videos! That's a very nice Maytag. And the wringers are cool too!

How wonderful our webmaster got his first lesson in hanging laundry on a clothesline. Looks like he could use some more lessons. I wonder how he will do with hanging up shirts.

I know the model of Frigidaire dryer you're used to, and I can see where Geoff's would be confusing.

I found this in one of my brochures--it's even the sought-after, Sheer Look, control-tower model!

Apparently they were still producing condensers back then. Oddly enough, all we ever find here in Tucson are the Flowing Heat models... *sigh*

Love that Nate! How fun, the CLI-57 no less. I love how the wind flows along the ground and up through the pant legs and out the top. Were such a creative group aren't we? I love that!

This video was great! So much better than the re-run of Law and Order, SVU I skipped to watch it. Even my partner took a look now and then, and had some lecherous comments about our Webmaster.

Robert, one of the laundry rules we have in our house is "We never put in the dryer, what we can hang on the line." Our solar clothes dryer gets a lot of use. But, we both grew up in the country and laundry really was done only once a week on Mondays. Back then, a dryer could never keep up with a washer unless one owned a Frigidaire, so everything but towels and jeans went on the line. Old habits are hard to break.

Hi Guys, looks like a fab time was had by all, Geoff, love your line up of machines, so pristine...and the Maytag sudz save is all your birthdays come at once, the Maytag model E is the Hotpoint model A over here, must have been some sort of alliance for that one, did Hotpoint USA have the same wringers do you know??

Don, you will have to tell us which old soap powder gave the best "High" and aroma...

Robert, you definately need a lesson in line drying...LOl, funny, I always had you down as a "stretch em out" and let the world see your whitest whites kind of guy...

No lessons necessary Mike, there will be no clothes lines in my future, Neal would kill me at the idea of hanging any "ugly" lines through our backyard and his gardens. And your assumption is correct, I am a "stretch em out" and let the world see your whitest whites kind of guy, just not on the clothesline ;)

"Neal would kill me at the idea of hanging any "ugly" lines through our backyard and his gardens."

Our line is on a retractable wheel attached to the fence so it hides most of the time. I love sheets that are line dried. So nice-smelling and crisp to slide into at bedtime. But, I can understand how Neal feels. It just that when one's backyard ends and becomes a pasture with farm animals and outbuildings like ours does, the laundry on the line is one of the best looking things in the area. Can't beat those rows of Jockey Midway Boxer Briefs and Idaho redneck wife-beaters. ;o)

After the wash cycle, when the WP/KM's spin for about a minute, the valve goes CLANG before the grand spray rinsing starts. This keeps the washing liquors pure and undiluted for the next load.

Your fabulous Maytag sprays for a full minute. Does it clang as well. Couldn't tell in the vid., but I can't imagine that full minute of rinse water going into the "suds."

Thanks for thinking of me.

More of the fun ...

Just thought I'd share some of these photos with everyone; we really did have a great time!!

As I said earlier, my laundry room will never be the same; which is a really good thing!!

Enjoy ...

An over-suds of 1950's Oxydol; it took 3 rinses to get the suds out of these towels (won't do that again ... or ... maybe I will!).
