Robert,

I would like to thank you for creating and maintaining this site. Without you and your efforts, I may never have been able to put together what may be the closest match possible to the washer and dryer my family bought new in 1965. My parents moved into our first house, purchased in 1965 and they bought a GE1050X washer and GE1020 dryer in turquoise. Although those models were at least a couple years old by then, they must have been on sale to clear them out of their stock, at Burnham's Appliance store, on Sheridan Drive, Amherst NY.(The store is long gone).

When I saw Robert's posting of this washer, I emailed him and he provided the seller's info. It took about a week to confirm the deal and then another several weeks for Craters and Freighters to pick it up and get it to me.

I also want to give a huge thank you to Jimmy for introducing me to Graham (Sharples) who found the exact dryer we had (in white) a few months ago. Graham, thank you for selling me the dryer, as it makes an almost perfect matched set.

The dryer arrived first. The heating coils were broken, as the insulator hold-downs had rusted away at several points. I located the parts (still available btw from GE) and with Jimmy's instructions, was able to successfully re-do the heating elements. I also re-set the dryer timer to the display control so it is now in sync and indicates the amount of run time correctly.

The dryer does work on the timed cycle but the automatic cycle has some issues to be sorted out. There are some wiring or thermostat issues I will work on soon.

The washer cosmetically is like brand new. It is amazing and is the oldest and nicest looker in my small collection.

The washer probably saw little use. It was in the kitchen of an apartment in Queens NY. The seller was handling the moving of her mother to an assisted living center. Her mother wanted the washer to go to a good home, so there must have been some sentimental attachment for her. Anyone here would have given this washer a good home, so I am very grateful that it turned out to be me.

The washer is quickly coming back to life. The pump housing leaked (original pump) so I replaced it. The small tub boot clamp (goes around the transmission) was loose (probably from the shipping to CA). This machine has the cleanest outer tub on a GE I have ever seen. It really looks brand new. After stopping the leaks, I connected it to the wash room water connections. The hot water valve is stuck open so a new water valve is on order. The final item is the slow/fast clutch solenoid. I have one on order, as it is not functioning, so it always shifts to fast speed.

The washer and dryer are now mated next to each other. For reference, the washer came with the original owner's manuals. The model number is WA1054W. A suds saver would have been WA1059W.

Again, thanks Robert, Jimmy and Graham! My Mother saw the set and thought it was very cool that the past was recreated. She even remebered that her original set was turquoise. My collection really is complete now and I thank AW.ORG for that!

Mike

I'm glad they got to a good home! If you have any time would you consider scanning and posting the literature that came with the washer?

Hi Mike, thank you for your kind words that was very sweet. I was wondering what happened to that V12 General Electric washer in New York, well it couldn't have gone to a nicer home for it.

It's just MINT, we love that! I can't get over how minty it is. Is the light fluorescent or incandescent behind the dial? I love the way it shines through the General Electric logo. Mike when you get a chance, if you can, I would love to see a picture looking down into the wash tub and agitator, as well as one with the mini-basket installed (filter-pan off) so we can see down into it.

Glad it's safe and sound, enjoy, it's a beautiful set.

Maybe when you get a chance you and post some pics of it in operation. At least until I get to see it in person!!

Thanks

Good evening,

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Baja, I will scan all the info soon and post it for you. Please give me a few days as my work schedule is very busy for the next week or so.

Graham, yes, please thank John for finding the dryer. Looks like you had a successful day hunting also.

Steve, thanks for the kind words. You have been doing remarkable restorations which encourages me.

Robert, the console has a fluorescent bulb. The flash on the camera dulls the look of it. I will take some more photos over the coming weekend.

Rich and Scott (and anyone else who would like to come), I will do a mini-wash-in once the machines are working like new, maybe late July.

Once they are, I will post pics and try some digital video of the machines at work.

Thanks again,

Mike

Thanks Jimmy and Gansky also

Hi,

Jimmy, thanks for helping me with all the repair knowledge. You are my GE repairman for sure.

Gansky, thanks. The set makes me smile everytime I go in the laundry room.

Mike, I completely understand how you would want to find this set again. This is the first time I've seen this design and they are really beautiful machines. I like the raised control panels. That is way cool, and easy to keep clean. Looking forward to more pix and clips of these machines in action.

Here's what your parents' machines must have looked like:

Post# 217257 , Reply# 19   6/21/2007 at 01:09 (6,125 days old) by gewa1054wguy ()
Yes, Those are the ones...

Hi,

Yes, that is the set I began to use when I was about 10 years old. The washer stayed with us from the house to an apartment in Amherst, then to Wichita and then to Arkansas. My mother and brother moved to California in 1980 and the washer in perfect working order was given to Milly Haga, whom I stayed with for a few months while I finished high school in Yellville, AR. The last time I saw the machine, it was on their back porch hooked up for use. That was in the summer of 1980.

The dryer did not make it out of Buffalo. My parents tended to overload both machines. My mothers underwear or a sock quite often ended up in the pump of the washer. When I took over doing the wash, that never happened again. The dryer was replaced with a white kenmore unit of some type. I really do not remember what it looked like. It was electric and it would have been around 1972. It is odd that in most houses, the dryers outlast the washers. Typical for my odd family, it was backwards.

Thanks for posting the picture. I actually have several ads with this set in them. Most of the advertising for 1963 shows this color for the GE appliances. The other GE appliances in our house were coppertone, including a P7 oven with rotisserie top unit. The fridge had a bottom freezer with a foot pedal release but no automatic ice fill tray.

overlooked dependability

bajaespuma's profile picture
The only two times the GE repairman came to fix the V-12 were when a sock somehow breached the washbasket and ended up in the drain hole. When we sold the house in 1978, sixteen years later, they were both still working.

really stunning together! Your pictures prove we all really aren't crazy with our hobby!

I'm glad this V-12 turned up again as this was the model Nancy Smith had delivered long about 1962?? I always remembered the double high panel where the buttons were it was so neat for a GE. I never saw the mini basket and for some reason I remember two rows of buttons in that panel but that has to be a faulty memory.

We had the same problems with our 1956 GE, sock in the pump syndrome. Funny how a single design was prone to the same problem.
But your machine as holes in the tub doesn't it, or is it solid???

Nice pics!!

Hi Mike, I put the GE service manual for the dryer in the mail to you today. So thrilled you got these. You have the best vintage washer collection in S. Calif. Must feel great to have all your washer and dryers actually working and all hooked up. Did you put your modern set in storage?

I have always thought the bleach dispenser on this washer was very clever. It would swallow a whole bottle of bleach and hold it, then dispense a measured amount of it when you selected the funcion.

Thanks Jimmy!

Hi Jimmy,

Cannot wait to get the manual! I hope to work on it this weekend. Of course, the parts hunting is part of the fun also. The water valve for the washer should be here this week and I have the new speed shifter already. Hopefully those will get the washer back to normal.

The dryer I have a feeling will take some time. If it needs a new thermostat, yikes, talk about obsolete. We will see.

Thanks again, and yes, the newer GE's are stored for a while. I hope to build a small "two set" laundry room in the house next spring and they will go back into service then.

Mike

GE Dryer Service Manual

Hi Jimmy (AKA Filter Flo),

The dryer service manual arrived today! Thanks. It has the procedures for checking the thermostat operation so I am all set.

I will let you know what I find over the weekend. Thanks for thinking of me. Without your assistance, these would just be collecting dust in a storage unit.

Glad you got the manual safe and sound and so happy for you with your new GE set. Thank goodness the outer tub is in good shape with none of the usual holes typical of those machines. But then you are the GE outer tub expert now, having repaired several ! ! Isnt it a great feeling to have saved those by just a few simple repairs?

Dryer working like NEW

Hi Jimmy,

Thank you for the book! It details the operation of the compensated control. It is unlike later models in operation. Rather than heating and monitoring the tempterature with a thermostat until a set temp is reached where the timer then starts, it does this: Depending on the timer position (delicate, regular or heavy), the timer is activated until the heating coils turn on. When they are ON, the timer stops. This cycle repeats and due to the increase in drum temperature, the cycling takes more time the longer the dryer runs. Therefore, setting the timer to Heavy results in more cycle repeats so the overall drying time is increased. Very interesting!

I did find one wire that was touching a neighbor wire on the terminal strip so corrected that. Once that was done, everything started to work as designed. The compensated control may have been replaced, as there is no adjustment screw on the unit as expected. I am very happy to confirm proper operation!

Once my water valve arrives for the washer, they will be in perfect working order.

Thanks again Jimmy!

Once everything is working as designed, I will post pics of the washer activator, mini basket, etc.

Mike
