The first washer my Mum had was a Frigidaire possible Kelvinator FL with a spin of 600rpm.

My question is .. Who made it?

Does anyone have any pics of any?

And is Kelvinator and Frigidair related? especially around this period.
Research tells me that Kelvinator appliances were made in the now Candy factory on The Wirral in the 70s/80sn so is it possible it was British made ot Italian?

From memory although I was 4 when we got rid of it was that it essentially looked like NickUKs/RobMs restored Hotpoint, same door and fascia FWIR in the same shades of brown.

Also FWIR clear door glass.

Although the thing that confuses me is it had a dial similar to a Hoover of the late 70s early /80s.
Think of lavamat jons Mums Hoover dial with a silver front.

Is it possible it was a re badged Hotpoint Liberator or even the possibility it was the Zanussi made Hotpint with a different dial?

Im intrigued as so far its been the most reliable machine Mums ever had. possible neck and neck 2nd with our Electrolux aka Zanussi Jetsystem from 1992.

Sorry im so sparse and jittery but id love to know about it and cant provide anymore ifo than what ive given.

Thanks Guys

Rob

Hi Rob, I am intrigued...the only Frigidaire washer i knew of really dates from the late 60's and it was a top loader. It was called a Jetamatic. I will have a route around and see if i can find any reference to Kelinvator / Frigidaire washers from the late 70's / early 80's.

And I thought I was the only one who had 'mystery machines'!

Have had a quick gander through old 'Which' magazines and the following Frigidaire and Kelvinator machines were present:

* - have an image and will post when I have a working scanner

Frigidaire de luxe Automatic 50* (November 1974) 480rpm, Frigidaire de luxe Automatic 51* (February 1976 & October 1977) heavy styling changes but essentially the same as the Automatic 50. Had a square door over the 50's round door.
Frigidaire 41 (February 1976 & October 1977) 420rpm, a cold fill only machine.
Kelvinator KW95* (March 1977) 500 rpm.
Frigidaire 585 washer/dryer (January & July 1979) 850rpm

Both brands were out of the fairly comprehensive 'Which' listings, when they next reported on washers in March 1980.
Then Frigidaire reappeared in the May 1982 edition with the following:

Frigidaire Compact 800
Frigidaire LC240H washer/dryer - 550rpm - 'a tub type top loading washer with a drier attached above'.
Frigidaire Laundry Centre LC808 washer/dryer - 800rpm

Sorry about no images (will post once scanner works!). The Kelvinator brand was bought by Candy and reintroduced in 1983, but was gone again by 1984 (I think!). The Frigidaire's listed above were present in the listings till about 1985 and then vanished again along with the brand name.

Gives you an idea of at least some of the models (maybe all of them?) available in the late 70's through mid 80's. Hope this is of help.

Cheers
Paul
p.s just to note that none of the machines pictured in 'Which' (highlighted by a *) smacked of a Hotpoint Liberator style machine
p.p.s a while back I posted a mystery machine of my own - am pretty sure it is the Creda Microelectronic 12000, listed in the 1982 and 1983 period (sold alongside the black facia 10700 and 10800 models) - anyone any pictures?

There was a brief connection in AU

In the late 80's, early 90's there was a period of Kelvinator/Frigidaire branded Fisher Paykels. After the F&P's they became Kelvinator/Frigidaire branded Simpsons.

After GMH Frigidaire shut up shop in the late 70's it was only ever a branding of another appliance.

Hi Rob

Wow, you might have been the only one to use a genuine GM made Frigidaire auto....a good solid machine , expensive to buy, you could get a Hoover with a fast spin for about a fiver difference etc...see if its any of these.....cheers, Mike

Frigidaire Model 50, 1974, 10lb load, 480rpm spin, 2.8kw heater, Stainless Steel door, 3 compartment dispenser

Paul, Nathan, Keith, Mike Cheers its much appreciated!

Mike the Model 50 really looks like what I remember from the age of 4.... it does look Liberatoresque to a degree although the dial is not quite as I remembered it I could be mixing and confusing memories of people I knew with Hoover machines etc.

It definitely had a round door though. we have never had a square door machine in our house with exception of a Loan Square Door Bendix for a week. Hang on does a Hotpoint WM62 count as a square door??? LOL

Anyways I think that could of been it.....Now I need the courage to find out if Mum bought it 2nd hand which is possible cos at the time she would have been 16/17 possibly 18. Or if she had it new.

Blast from the past indeed!

This is reqally appreciated guys Thankyou sdo much.

Il try to find out more depending on whether or not I can. A magnum of red I have, once shared with my lovable maternal unit might just work...... LOL!

R

Got in there before me

Cheers for saving me the scanning job Mike - the way things are going with me and scanners would have resulted in a long wait for images.

Hijacking the thread a bit - only a little though....

Mike (anyone) - do you remember the Creda Microelectronic 12000 from the early 1980s (listed in the April 83 Which magazine, page 170, machine 12)? Black faciad top of the range machine from the 10700 and 11800 series (the series that replaced the Creda square door machines 10100, 10200 and 10300 models).
Seem to remember it having a small, white programmer dial - only ever saw one when I was about five or six. Be great to see one again - has anyone got a picture of one?

Fingers crossed
Cheers
Paul
