...at mom's office. I'd start it with a ton of palmolive dish soap and then watch everyone freak out!

FYI: I wouldn't let my kids do that or near it... My nephew did that once thinking he was helping and mommie made it very clear not to touch it again unless she was there to supervise

Look at the dingaling klling this maytag

The electronic timer kills yet another machine!

In defense of the Maytag, there may be an on-site obstruction causing the machine to not latch.

I worked in a big fancy office in a skyscraper. Last one out was to start the dishwasher on their floor.

I found it quite funny that our elite and super-intelligent [the lawyers, (read: book-smart, only)] were so proud of their long hours. Yet it was they that constantly flooded the machine with hand-dishwashing liquid detergent.

The machines on-site were TOL GEs, electronically-controlled in the mid 80's

That stupidity with the Maytag dishwasher not latching was probably like the emergency call Jeff had for a WP upright freezer where the door would not close, everything was going to be ruined, this freezer is no good, etc. so come over here fast. True, the door would not close, but it was a package of frozen food that was blocking the door from closing. I loved the dishwasher owner just slamming it harder and harder without checking to see if anything inside was sticking out in such a way that it kept the door from closing. Probably a rental property and after they crack the plastic inner door, they will demand replacement.

You wouldn't believe what people try with dishwashers at work (law firm). I did have a trainee receptionist try running it with liquid detergent (what a mess), but it's the way people try to load it that makes me shake my head. Cups and glasses lying on their sides, nested bowls, you name it. Needless to say I redo anything other people load on my final sweep at the end of the day. It is well many of those people have advanced degrees as they would NEVER make it as homemakers!

That was funny.
Back when I was a teeny-bopper I worked at a Woolworths. This one had a lunch counter built into it. The woman who worked there, a Helen, was a total bitch! Mean and nasty. She was one of those that only she knew what was going on and everyone else in the world was stupid. Well a couple of times us stock boys decided to get her good.
The dishwasher in the lunch counter was one of these large commercial jobs. In the bottom was a removable grate. At night, right before closing we'd lift the grate up and put in about 1/2 a box of Tetrox, the dishwasher detergent for this machine. Then we would replace the grate. Well, the box said only to use 1/4 cup for each wash.
So the next day, poor unsuspecting bitchy Helen would come in and load up the dishwasher and add MORE Tetrox (not knowing that under the grate was a ton of it!) and turn it on.
We actually never saw the action, but heard about it! We heard that the sudsing were so great that it flowed out the front door of the store! Nobody ever realized what was going on. The store manager(numb nuts) kept calling the repair service for a defective dishwasher.
And to make it even better, poor Helen was there by herself during the day, so she would have to clean this up!
We did this to her about 7 or 8 times I guess over a three month period, always using random days. Then I got tired of the job and quit to work as a line refueler at the local airport. But I don't think either Helen or the store manager ever figured out what was causing this mess.
You know, I have never told anyone about this before, see what you guys do to me!

My dad did the liquid-handsoap trick once with the dishwasher...I remember being about six or so, and wondering why the dishwasher was making odd noises. Then, I saw the sheet o' suds coming out over the kick panel.

For years, I thought that my dad was demonstrating a distinct lack of housekeeping know-how, until I later realized the brilliance of it all--my mother wouldn't let him touch the dishwasher for years...

...which was probably exactly what he was hoping for :-)

I did it too

Age 7. I really wanted to get the dishes clean so I put everything I could find under the sink in the dishwasher. It was a late 50's GE pull out drawer model. It had a half moon dial on the front of it. The suds came out the top flowing down the entire front of the dishwasher, down the galley style kitchen, into the laundry room, down 2 steps into the garage. My Mom was really cool about it. She just said ah,you put too much soap in it and let the thing run.... She figured if I watched what it did it would make sense to me. I only use the proper amount of Cascade now.
