I decided to continue this post from "Old Maytag in Palo Alto."

I'm consistently amazed just how quiet this dryer runs. Here's a "before" pic right after I dragged it into the laundry room. Please excuse the mess, a bunch of stuff was flying across the room in all directions to make a pathway for the dryer.

Here are a few pics with the back panel removed. It appears that it has never been off in over 40 years!! Pretty nasty!!!

Everything but the drum and console were removed, cleaned, lubricated, and re-installed. This is much better!!!

I completely disassembled the motor, blew out a ton of lint, and cleaned and lubricate the bearings. I regret not taking and pics of the motor completely torn down. I couldn't believe the quality and simplicity of this motor, not to mention that it's brushless design. No wonder why these machines last forever without any maintenance!!

I replaced both the drum light and the console light since they were dead. Here they are in proper working condition.

As stated before, I'm missing 3 of the 4 buttons (I only have the "Regular Fabrics" button.) If anybody has extras lying around, I'm willing to pay whatever it takes to get them. All offers will be accepted, even ridiculous ones :>)

What would be the washer counterpart? A 160?

Dan

Oh Dan:

That is a very good cleaning job you did on that machine. I always take mine apart completely as well and get rid of what most folks never know about, all that nasty stuff in a machine.

Nice work on your new dryer! A good cleaning makes it feel much more like your own and worthy of your clothes.

The buttons may be a challenge to find but calling around to Maytag service & dealer shops may yield what you need and hopefully some unexpected surprises too! The matching washer you're looking for would be an A900 or A902. The cabinet style of the earlier model 160 is a bit different than your dryer. This dryer didn't come out until late in this series of machines and there wasn't a pushbutton dryer that actually matched the 160 washer - it was paired with a dryer that had a center-dial.

It looks very good. No rust. Dryers usually don't. I like the pushbutton Tags.

Was that a mouse nest in the back of the dryer, opposite the motor?
