WOW, now that is just beautiful a 1957 set in Pink! Never Used as well, amazing. I think this is the first NOS GE we've seen.

My Dad was a mechanical Engineer

chachp's profile picture
..and he worked there for a long time back in the 50s. We lived in Rochester and he commuted every day. He was actually one of the engineers that desinged small appliances back in those days. Gee, that must be where I got it.

Ironically, we had a Whirlpool washer and a Youngstown Kitchens Dishwasher. I think we had a GE stand mixer that I never wanted to play with. I always wanted to play with my Mom's Sunbeam mixer. I remember he brouhgt home a portable garbage disposal. It never caught on. My Mom said she used it once and thought it was awful.

Ew, wow, I am willing to bet these babies go over $1000. What are the chances of finding such rare pieces half a century old. And with all the literature and hoses.

Yes, it would be an interesting story as to why they never bothered connecting.
It is noteworthy the way they basically pack and ship them now so similarly to back then. And the manufacture details stayed so similar for like 40 years. The gluing on of the wiring diagram onto the wooden back panel. The panel. The aluminum drain hose hook, Even the dryer back panel looks similar to standard capacity dryers only here the panel is vertical instead of horizontal.

The washer cabinet looks like it is mounted on a pedestal of sorts

I just like the pink. the darker shade of pink for the agitator cap and filter-flo gives it the appearance of being dressed properly with lipstick and blush. lol.

The washer cord must be tucked inside? The holes that are there seem too small for everything that needs to come out the back.

The dws must have been stand alone models without the top for a built-in.

I am guessing the person who got these really did not know how to use them. She probably was thrilled to have the newest technology but just couldn't let go of old habits. Perhaps a wringer washer. lol. kind of like buying a computer for your grand parents or parents. Maybe they would be clueless or intimidated. The fact that they kept the original stove and oven, the appliances that were used, when they could have switched out for a nice avacodo set in the 70s or a Sand or Almond colored set in the 80s. Gimmee some harvest gold. But they didn't. I bet these were dearly loved for their status.

Now this will be an auction to watch.

What a beautiful set! Maybe they won them in a contest or something. Many homes in the 50's did not have plumbing for an automatic washer. Hard to believe they sat on a back porch for 50 years! When I was a wee lad, our neighbors had this set...plus their old wringer washer for good measure. The lady would often have both machines washing away. Rugs, work clothes and jeans in the wringer --- and linens, towels and the rest in the automatic.

Contrast

Amazing how well these have survived almost 50 years inside a house or basement compared to the '57 Plymouth buried in Tulsa in an effort to preserve it for the future.

I know what it feels like to find your dream set. If this is yours, it will be worth the cost to obtain them. This is a very rare opportunity so find a way monetarily to do it. If you live within a few hours, make the effort to rent a truck or van to pick up your winnings.

The perfect end to a Filter Flo summer!

Considering how many folks are already "openly" bidding (and driving the price up on each other---- DUH!) there is no telling how many "snipers" are out there!
I'll bet this gets real "sporty" before it is all over. And I can just imagine who will have the "sportiest" bid.

Nonetheless, these sure are kool machines. Suppose there are replacement tub boots out there still on a shelf? Pretty rare. Hopefully not too dry rotted, as I'd imagine it will be a good idea to remove and treat the tub boot on this machine before use----just to be careful. What do the GE guru's think?
How would you prepare this set for their maiden runs after so many years of sitting, so as to lessen the risk of damage to old and possibly dry rotted parts?

Or a "sniper face" I would imagine.

Bidding against yourself is an exercise in futility - all the action will be in the last 20 seconds of the auction anyway.

Oh my.

Why does $4700.00 roughly come to mind.

This is surely one happy Auctioneer. Whom we should be grateful to for having an open eye to these special machines. Some people would look at these and wrinkle their forehead and throw them out because "they aren't stainless steel" blah, blah.
I hope it is one of our members bidding and will share them once they get them. begging like a puppy.

LOL, wouldn't it be crude and perhaps too real if it was actually a wealthy person who already has this set in white and just wants the control panels because theirs is degraded. So at any price they are looking for parts. lol. they'll have them shipped, take off the panels(or their servants will remove them, sorry) and the rest will be scraped. lol.

That's mean. We need to think positive that they will get a nice new home where they can frolic and play with other machines of similar vintage.

Um Yeah, I've never seen that partially convenient calculator before but, whatever.

Travis, you could try listing yourself on Ebay to see if there is any takers.
What's the most you think you would get.
Maybe 50 bucks?

I think Ebay has prohibitions on listing people ...
though,
I don't WHAT their ISSUE is. (shaking head back and forth)

AHH! list yourself AND your toys. Bingo.
see, there, it's a complete package-deal.
And, maybe you would get much more. Perhaps in the $150 plus category.
Maybe put the TOYS upfront and mention in small print that YOUR included. At least this way your more likely to sell.
...slip by the ebay sensors and what not. SHH..

Hell, Greg already put a link to the Snipe web-page, and THATS where the REAL action will be anyway.

I'm thinking these will go for between 6-7K.
A lot cheaper than a new Miele pair, take the 70# PW6321 for instance. AND Miele isn't offering them in pank.

Hooray for capitalism! Demand based pricing, just like the airlines. If there is a will, there is a way.

But, jeez Louise, $3.5K for a General Electric washer and dryer? For a GE? C'mon, it's just a GE!

The Philcos

I seem to remember a rather nice pair of pink Philcos of the about same vintage. That pair went for $8000.00 I believe.

Although the Philcos had a more unusual washing action that the GE, the GE set is brand new!!

This past weekend I saw the same oven and cooktop that is related to these GE appliances, in a home, in yellow. (Remote push-button control cooktop) They also had a green 1-18 in the garage, still connected and functioning. I am hoping to pick that baby up this weekend.

What a gorgeous pair. I love the pink color and the pink accents on it most of all I think!

For those out there who have done full restorations: how much is it to have a professional repaint on a washer and dryer set?

Syracuse, NY GE 1957 Filterflo Washer & Dryer

Hello, all...I am one of the Sellers of these Great (OK, so I had no idea!) machines! While my s.o. had an inkling that they were worth something to someone, I must admit, I thought they were headed for the dump! So, he has said "I told you so", and I am hanging my head in shame... The reason I am writing is that, there is some mystery surrounding these appliances...(incl. the dishwasher, which, btw, don't be too concerned about the front...the big spots are tape...the former owner's son told us that their father "just never got around to hooking the machines up." Personally, I think he must have been a world-class jerk, and if I had had these in my home but unable to use them, I would have gone on strike. Of course, back then, women pretty much did it all as far as housework.
So, was Mr. Cimbal lazy, or just pre-occupied with his car mechanics? (Yes, we found lots of car "stuff", too.) So, there you have it...brand-spankin' new vintage GE washer & dryer and dishwasher (oh, and the kitchen was painted pink also)...He did get as far as setting the dishwasher in, and started to wire it in, as I recall, but that was as far as it got. Man, I'd have killed him, if I had been MRS. Cimbal! Well, best of luck to whoever wins...we have had several emails from someone, who wants them badly, because his grandmother had the same set...ok, which one of you guys is it??? I'll stick to my new front loader, thanks!! But, I would LOVE to see pics of these things when the winner gets them up and running!

Cathy-----

Hopefully you will keep your eyes open for more of these gems. Sometimes they are very used and looking very rough----filty and covered with dust. However they clean up well, can usually be restored, and become treasures for someone!

There are lots of strange stories out there concerning old machines. It is amazing how many machines turn up almost new---because someone very stubborn refused to change their ways. Automatic Washers hardly used because someone thought their old Wringer-Washer did a better job. Or the gift of a Clothes Dryer---never used because someone preferred a clothes-line instead! Sounds crazy, but most of us here on this website are all too familiar with such stories. Mrs.Cimbal may have been the culprit, not Mr. Cimbal!

My Grandmother ...

...got a new 1960 something Lady Kenmore roto-rack dishwasher for Christmas one year. She absolutely refused to use it! The ONLY time it was used was when all her kids and grandkids were in for a Holiday and THEY would hook it up and use it. Otherwise, it was just another handy place to stack stuff in the kitchen! I have that machine and can't wait for John L to get it restored for me!!! Mark

Another new washer/ dryer story

I had an aunt and uncle who built a very nice house and did alot of the work themselfs. They had 5 children and a brand new top of the line Westinghouse washer and dryer in the basement but my uncle (who worked at westinghouse) didn't hook-up the set. For years my aunt had to go to the laundromat or wash by hand. Even after the kids were older and my aunt worked part time and could of paid to have them hooked up the washer and dryer just sat there. It got to be such a family joke it was brought up at every family gathering (she played the part of the long suffering marter and he just dug his heels in and refused even more).Eventually after the kids where grown my uncle put in the hook ups but by then my aunt didn't want that "old set" so she had the old "new" set that hadn't been used hauled away and went to sears and got a brand new kenmore set. I think partly to get back at him because they weren't Westinghouse.

Roger told me last night that dot in the panel is for the suds-saver. My 1960 doesn't have one - dammit. I should have bid ;-)

I too hope we get to see pics of this beautiful set doing it's maiden loads at age 50!

Thanks for your congratulations

Can't believe that I'll be seeing that old familiar salmon-orange timer dial again for the first time since about 1970... when my maternal grandfather came to live with us following my grandmother's passing in 1967, and never again did I see the flat in San Francisco where the GE Filter-Flo used to occupy its spot in the kitchen next to the sink. Have been wanting another GE like it ever since, so it ONLY took 37 years...!! Someone in Lexington, KY, on another Web chat page pertaining to appliances told me, a couple of years ago, that I'd just missed an identical set that was sitting by the curb for pick-up; this person was even nice enough to go back to check, but the GE set was gone by that time.

The only thing that could make the set more meaningful would be if it were to bring with it the times and family members associated with the "original" Filter-Flo from the long-gone days in San Francisco. I know that's impossible, so instead I will wonder, if the GE set could share its own memories, what it would have to say about being purchased and then allowed to sit, idle, for the last five decades! Is there a Code section pertaining to appliance neglect as there is for neglectful treatment of children?!

Anyway, I'll let everyone know how the mechanics are as soon as they're here; and I'll share the name of the delivery person with anyone who is interested in transport services; he is coming to California for the seller anyway on another haul and supposedly is charging only $450 for transporting the GE's to California. That is the bargain of the decade as far as shipping is concerned!

Wow! I'm really happy for you! Another valuable set cheats the scrapyard or worse! We want pictures you know. Wish I had my mom's budget '58 GE washer.

Looks like

everyone is a winner here. The seller got an amount for the set they probably never imagined getting, the buyer got another chance to relive cherished times from his past and build new ones with his beautiful set, and we get to enjoy seeing the whole thing unfold. It's a happy ending for everyone!
