I have one of these in working order (circa 1970-71 made by GEC, model 4604/0000)

There is a board at the back with a ragged edge.

Would this be asbestos?

Any thoughts?

Hey Jon

I would think its highly likely - asbestos was still in common use around that time!!.

Not a good thing, particually if its flaking :(.

AKAIK these are based on US Westinghouse designs- maybe someone with knowledge of these can advise more?

Do not bring that into any living area! You'll risk contaminating it, don't even put it in your garage!

It's quite likely that could be asbestos alright. If so, it needs to be dealt with properly by an expert.

Asbestos is very dangerous.

Calm Down!Is the peice of "Asbestos" intact and not coming apart? If so it is realitively safe to handle. You can carefully replace the unknown panel with a peice of hardboard or plywood,or metal.Keep the unknown in a sealed plastic bag.If you handle the unknown or asbestos panel do so carefully-do not break or cut it,or anything to cause it to shed fibers.Wear a dust mask and eye protection while handling it.
