Well thanks to Robert and this site i have got my dream set, an early 50's matching westinghouse washer and dryer. Here is a picture of the set together. I got the washer in NJ and the dryer in Delaware for a combined $320.00 yay!!

Inside pic... the washer is missing its feet so it appears lower.

Congratulations---it's a beautiful pair. Many happy, splashy loads to you! And be sure to pour 2 cups of sand into a load of towels to prove its sand-removal capabilities, ala the Westy TV commercial housed elsewhere on this site.

Graham, Congratulations!! You will have such fun with the set. With the weight to save door you will never have to large of a load again!!

Congrats on the beautiful Westies - quintessential 50's look. Can we see some shots of the insides close-up, and the controls - I'm sure there are multitudes who have never seen them before. I'm amazed at how lucky we've been as a group to have so many nearly mint looking, and working Westinghouse sets in our respective collections. One of my favorite ads to find as a kid pouring over old magazines in my aunt's basement.

Just beautiful!

Congrats Sharples!!!

I love those westys and always enjoy seeing pics and vids. I suppose the nearest we had over here was the Hoover slanted front Keymatic from the 60s. Shame the Keymatic didnt have a window though like the westinghouse. I just love to see whats going on!

Of course there has been the slanted front Hoover vision recently but its not the same a vintage one!

Yours look great together. What a great event it is getting matching pairs.

Mark

Oh Graham they look just beautiful together, congratulations. I'm thrilled you got the dryer as well. You can't get any more quintessential 1950's than a slant front Westinghouse set!

Congratulations Graham

That is a great set - I always like to see a matched set. The clear glass on the 54, a good boot, and looks like really good plastic inserts, they are a good set.

On my set, you can do a little test area if you like, but I lathered them down with soft-scrub with bleach. I let that bleach/gel mixture sit on them for 15 minutes or so -- it really took out alot of the yellow discoloration that had got into the paint. I didn't buff it too hard but the stuff isn't supposed to scratch. Then I gave it a good coat of car polish. I'd take the time to just dab an artist's brush into some white paint if there is a little scratch here and there. You won't even notice when its done. Good luck.

Question about the dryer

In the photo, it looks like the drum is mounted horizontal. Is it really, or is it just the camera angle? And if it is horizontal, how do they fill the gap between the drum's front edge and the slanted front of the dryer?

Thank you

Thank you all for the nice words...I am super excited about having them. I can't pull myself away from staring at them.

P.S. the dryer drum is horizontal, it's filled in with a piece of angled iron.

Graham,

I'm glad that you got another matched set. But since this is your dream set, does it mean that you're done collecting? lol
