Made this picture during my stay in Rotterdam. I was quite appalled by degree of rust on such a relatively new Indesit.

Oh pour lady...

And it's an electronic model too...what a shame to let a machine so young end like that...so rusty!

Corrosion

OMG that's bad!
The last time I seen a machine that rusty was in the 80s. It was a Philco Bendix 7147a and the bottom left of the cabinet had actually collapsed up into itself making the machine lean to the left. It actually still worked LOL.

I guess the Indesit is the European version of the
"Rustinghouse"

Rustinghouse or Rugginox

Hello Diomede, I'd only save that Indesit just to throw it down from the roof of a five or six storey house! Much better to save the really excellent Philips tv...

WOW! I wonder if the washer was exposed to the salt air in Rotterdam some how. Louis, I have to say that you take the most interesting vacation pictures of anyone I know and we all thank you for sharing them.

In looking at that cabinet, a lot of the rust is under the dispenser and below the door. I wonder if it was regularly overdosed with detergent and had suds backing up through the drawer. Rusty streaks are visible under the door running down to the badly rusted area at the bottom so the abusers might have damaged the door gasket or something. Rather than a washing machine, those people need a rock in a river.

I think Tomturbomatic has hit the nail on the head.

I repaired a Whirlpool front loader which had been used in a small cafe for washing dish towels. It had a clogged hose from dispenser to tub, so detergent and water flowed down the front of the machine. By its condition it was obvious it had been used by people who didn't know what they were doing. It was only a few years old but had bad surface rust which I sanded back and painted. Unfortunately the damage extended inside, the drum support spider was eaten through by detergent residues. I gave the machine to a friend but its drum broke free during a spin - its remains are now in my garage.

I know Indesit is no longer a trusted name on this website but that machine appears to be a victim of gross neglect.

Chris.

Thank you Tom!

The salt air can't be the problem, Rotterdam is not at the coast, but more inland. I have friends who live in a seaside resort and they never had problems like this.

The apartment building where this picture was taken has connections for a washer in the bathroom. There is no window in the bathroom but it is on a central ventilation system. My wild guess is that they turned off the ventilation system and the humidity level in the bathroom is very high all the time. Still very odd that the rust gets to such a degree. I've never seen a recent machine seen as rusty as this one.

I agree with the conclusions here.
