I've been reading several postings about the Frigidaire 1-18. Was the "Rapid Dry 1000" machine a variation on the 1-18? It seems to me I remember Frigidaire advertising the Rapid Dry, and I think it was in the early 1970's. Was it actually a 1000 rpm spin? Several modern front loaders have boasted of 1000 rpm spins, Frigidaire's technology must have been way ahead of it's time if they had this in the seventies.

I am not one of the resident GM-era Frigidaire experts here, but I think I can answer your question. The Rapid Dry 1000 machine was made in the 1960's, before the larger-tub 1-18 machines came along in the 1970's. The 1-18's did not spin at 1000 rpms.

This is even more impressive: The Unimatic Frigidaires (through the 1958 models) spun at 1140 rpms!

"Roller-Matic" with "Rapidry" 1964-1969?

From 1947 to 1958 the Unimatic mechanisms spin at 1140. These machines had a 9 lb capacity rating. The later Rollermatic "Rapidry" washers had a larger, 12 lb capacity. Since the diameter of the tub was increased to increase capacity, theoretically, the spin effectiveness would be about the same spinning at 1010 rpm in a slightly larger tub as 1140 in the earlier machines.

Top Spin Speeds of GM Frigidaire Washers

unimatic1140's profile picture
1947-1958 Unimatics 1140rpm
1955-1958 Pulsmatics 630rpm
1959-1964 Multimatics 710rpm or 850rpm
1965-1969 Rollermatics "Rapidry models" 1010rpm
1965-1969 Rollermatics "Standard models" 710rpm
1970-1979 1-18 Rollermatics 660rpm

No top loading washer to date has ever broken our beloved Unimatics spin speed which is technology design and patented in the mid to late 1930's!

Didn't the oldest GE washers claim a spin speed of 1170?
Is that incorrect or are we GM-era Frigidaire fans in denial? (Cut to Frigilux being chased by torch-wielding villagers...)

1170 RPM

1170rpm was a typo in the Consumers Research report. GE's AW6 line also spun at 1140rpm too! Unfortunately the AW6 line was only produced from '47 to '50.

Uni----- In the words of Johnny Carson, I did not know that! Thank you for the clarification, you wise and all-knowing sage; I shall never again question the supremacy of the Frigidaire Unimatic.

Robert, did the '65 Rollermatic you had and sold on eBay spin at 1010 or 710?

spin speed for westnghouse laundromat

Does anyone know the spin speed for the original Westinghouse front-loading "Laundromat" (with the slanted front). I hear this was one of the first front loaders that didn't need to be bolted to the floor to avoid moving around while spinning.

Anyone out there have a working "Laundromat"?

Barry

Westinghouse Laundromat no rapidry

The Westinghouse Laundromat was THE first automatic washing machine that had suspension and did not have to be bolted down. I believe Jimmy Filter Flo has the first Laundromat model in his collection. They spun at about 500 rpms.
