Hi Riccardo, oh what a great video, Bravo! and amazing restoration as well. I love the fact that the door doesn't lock and you can open in during spin. I also loved the commercial at the end. Thank you for making such a cool video.

That is a wonderful video. My mother's first washer was a very similar machine: no detergent dispenser and a safety switch in the door. Yes, I have pressed that button too as a child! The sounds also bring back memories. Candy is not known for it's durability. I find it amazing that this machine is still working.

Thanks for the fun. Love the red door switch on the top of the machine.

Very cool.

Thank you very much. As soon I can, I’ll prepare a pdf document showing all the steps of this long restoration. First of all I want to thank a friend of mine, Sebastian, who made with me the great work you see here. Candy made lovely machines, real design masterpieces in the Italian washing machine history. I think that Candy quality was good until the end of the ’70; after that they became to use to much plastic and the current machines are quite sh#&!
My A3 didn’t work when I got her. I disassembled her completely. I started to call almost all the Italian repair centres, and I found useful pieces (e.g. the door seal, which was completely gone). On the other hand, all the mechanics work fine, it were not damaged. My machine was previously repaired during her 43 years, and probably the motor was changed. She mounts a Candy Fullmatic motor, the one which is in the permanent exposition at the “Triennale” in Milano. So, the motor is 5-6-years older than the whole machine!
1964 series was a second “edition” of Candy Automatic, the first of which had the detergent dispenser near the timer under the blue door on the top. Due to problems of condensation, the timer corroded too fast and the machine used to break too often. So in my series, they decided to close the hole and they put the programme legend you see on the left of the red timer. So I’m forced to introduce detergent manually in the drum… and the same thing for the softener. But my machine lasted. The lady who owned that machine before me daily used her until 2004… I think she lasted quite enough!

Bye,
Rijk.

I would love to see some pictures of the inside of the machine. Does it have a dark blue porcelain outer tub?

Post# 235858 , Reply# 7   9/10/2007 at 08:53 (6,071 days old) by candyrijk ()

No. She has zinc coated outer tub.

Fantastic job Rikj

Have just watched the vid and, have to say, the restoration looks stunning. Many congratulations on a job well done.

I saved a piccy of your machine on my computer a number of months ago and the transformation is stunning.

I have already forwarded the link to a fellow washer fan as it will serve as superb inspiration. He has just acquired another Hoover Keymatic 3224, as well as a Hoover Keymatic 3226, plus he already owns a Hoover Keymatic 3203 (the more normal looking machine with a porthole door). I know he will love it.

I have a dream. First to own a house, but a close second is to own my own Hoover Keymatic or Hoover Matchbox series or Hotpoint Liberator machine (all three if possible) and do, with the help of my dad, fantastic restoration jobs on them all, with the results looking just like your Candy.

Once again, all my congratulations on your machine.
Have fun
Cheers
Paul

Thank you for the wonderful video! You did a great job on restoring that Candy.

My mother had a Candy too, I'm not sure but I think it was a 1965 model. No detergent dispenser either and the timer wasn't under a lid. I remember the timer was grey, there was a green on and off button and like yours the door button was red.

Could you please tell what numbers on the timer correspond with which cycles? I think my mother's machine only had 6 cycles.

Post# 235993 , Reply# 11   9/11/2007 at 08:43 (6,070 days old) by candyrijk ()

Dear foraloysius
Here you find the programme legend:

1 - prelavaggio
prewash

2 - biancheria molto sporca (bollitura)
very dirty clothes (boiling water)

3 – universale per cotone, lino e canapa
universal for cottons, linens and hemp cloths

4 – cotone, lino e canapa con colori delicati
cottons, linens and hemp cloths with delicate colours

5 – universale per seta e fibre sintetiche
universal for silk and synthetics

6 – biancheria delicatissima o che lascia il colore
very delicate clothes which may fade

7 – biancheria solo da sciacquare e asciugare
clothes to rinse and dry

8 – biancheria solo da asciugare
clothes to dry

Regarding the machine your mother owned, I spoke with my friend Sebastian (who knows very well each model) and we think that it was a Candy SAM (super automatic). It was a cheaper version of the famous Super Automatic 5 (SA5) that you see below. The difference was in the number of programmes, in the 3/5 kg option… but it was quite different in comparison with my Automatic 3.
Bye!
Rijk

GOOD! It would be the most interesting and the most useful thing for everyone of us...

So why don't ask Robert to create a section in the Cyber Museum where each country (as we're from all over the world) can show its best pieces!?!?

Candy would be the first...here in Italy peopole started to wash in the machines just wiht this WMs...we call them "le pietre miliari" of the industrial and social Italian revolution...
Then Costructa, Philco, Ignis, Rex Sangiorgio and lastly Ariston too...

Here you are a very interesting storyboard of what Candy meant and means stil now here! (click on "[60° interactive time machine])

Rijk (interesting name, it's a Dutch name, but also means rich in Dutch),

It's possible that it was a Candy SAM, but I can't remember. I don't remember a 3/5 kg option though, or was it in the timer? I think I remember the timer knob was grey, a round knob with a square pointer.

IIRC my mother's machine didn't have a prewash cycle and probably didn't have the delicate cycle, but not sure about that either. Thanks for bringing back memories!

Luigi ;-)

What a great video, and a real inspiration! It's so well put together and one of the best I have seen.

The door reminds me of the old indesits I used to see when I was a child. This machine seems a lot more stable though.

Yet another machine saved!

Rob

A great video i must say. Our neighbours had a similar machine and i loved visiting them and watching the washing machine wash.

Their machine had the detergent dispenser under a blue door on the top.

I,m not sure when they bought a new machine but i think it was around 1984-86.

LOL. I never knew about that safety switch in the door. I f i had known i would likely had played with it.

Hey, matchboxpaul, who has a Hoover Keymatic 3224?

Would be nice seeing a restoration of a such machine also.!!!

Hi Fredrik

The owner isn't a member yet, although I am trying to convince him.

There was a pretty shot at (externally anyway - looked appalling in the ebay pictures) 3224 Keymatic on ebay UK recently and he snapped it up for 99p! Well he has had it working, with water and spinning.

However he needs door seals for his slanted Keymatics. If anyone knows where there is a supply of door seals/boots for 3224 and 3226 Keymatics, please let me know. The one he used on his recent 3224 was a 'modified' Hoover New Wave seal, just to ensure there wasn't water ingress to the electrics.
He also owns an earlier 3224 purchase, again which has a perished door seal and recently purchased a 3226, which was pretty much on his doorstep!

I will keep working on him to join - when he does, he can tell you all about them himself.
Cheers
paul

Hi Riccardo, really enjoyed the video, one of the best seen with all the pics n stills, You have made a grand restoration of a timeless classic, love the bowed front, ( interesting what goes around, comes around again, think Electrolux)

What type of motor does this use?? does it have brushes/carbons??

Enjoy, Mike

Great machine, nice videos too. Just like a commercial washer :-).

The programme selector looks funky, and very 1960s! Love those spin starts too.

for Rijk and for Foraloysius

Hallo Rijk
I'm Carlo another Italian Candy lovers
fist of all a great thanks to Riccardo for the beautifull restoration of one of the first Italian automatic washer Candy Automatic 3 GRAZIE RICCARDO HAI FATTO UN GRANDE LAVORO
now for Foraloysius
I have scanned some old instruction books and one of these I think is the user instruction for the washer of your childhood.
When I've read your post, I understand that, probably, Candy SAM Super-A-matic was the washer you describe I have an old user manual of this machine, is in italian, but I post it for you and for all of us that are interested.

Thank you Carlo for sharing that manual. It looks pretty much the same as my mother's Candy. IIRC the colors were different, my mother's Candy had a beige timer knob etc. but further the machine is identical I think. Now I have to catch up my Italian. ;-)

Grazie!

GRAZIE RAGAZZI!

Non credevo assolutamente fossero esistite lavatrici così qui in Italia...

Però...mi fa strano scrivere in italiano qui su Automaticwasher...

Io non so voi...ma qui ci sono da quasi dieci anni...e ora sono in ottima compagnia!

GRAZIE!

PS: for you english speaking friends I've just said to the autors of the restoration what wonderful job they did! THANK THEM!

That's a very nice Candy washing machine you've restored, it looks great! I enjoyed watching the vid of it as well! It's got a nice method of washing and the water levels are also good. More vids please! I wonder what your next restoration project will be, another Candy or something different? I liked the old ads too!

Dear friends,
I've recorded a new video of my A3 washing, without the top and the back panel to see how she looks inside.

Riccardo SEI UN MITO!!!!

Grazie! Chissà quando e se riuscirò a fare lo stesso della mia Ignis... tu praticamente l'hai rifatto anche tutta dentro...io cerco solo di rimetterla in funzione e finora ho già fatto ben 4 riparazioni!!!!

Thaks! I really wish to do the same with my Ignis!

Post# 239619 , Reply# 29   9/30/2007 at 14:41 (6,051 days old) by mielabor ()

Another wonderful video. Thank you!

Now that I've seen the interior I must conclude that my mothers first washer was rather different. The outer tub was a different construction and I can't remember the tensioning wheel on the belt drive.

Oh and the vent! You need a separate vent when you don't have a detergent dispenser. I had completely forgotten about that but now I remember that my mothers machine had one too, but it was located on the back of the machine.
