Philips Whirlpool Aqualine Series

Hi hooverzodiac12,
My aunt has a Whirlpool Aqualine washer; she purchased it in 1991 and its still going strong with no repairs to date.
No they do not have any type of balance correction system just a standard Electronic speed control. They are built on mechanicals of the Philips Series 90 machines although they do not use the Philips DC Permag Motors, instead Whirlpool opted for a less expensive and more conventional Universal (Carbon Brush) Motor. They wash very well and the UK models had good deep rinses.

These are a good machine - a relative of mine uses four of them in holiday rental homes and they are great. There are a few models, the cheaper variants do spin pretty slow. (600 rpm) They are not noisy and wash well.

Their "balancing" act is simple, for each spin it spins a few seconds, stops and pumps out, reditributes the load and spins again. This initial short spin is usually enough to get most of the water out so the load balances easily. There is no fancy detection of unbalanced loads, but they rarely occur any way.

Chris.

My Mum had a Philips Whirlpool from 1993 to 2006 and it was a real workhorse. Eventually it gave up and has been replaced. Not sure what the quality of the Whirlpool ones are like. Her repair man said that the Philips Whirlpool machines were very well made and built to last.

washing bath mats!!!

Not 100% certain but I think it does 4 rinses with spins between all rinses. (It might only be three rinses??) It's one of the things I like about them.

People washing those rubber backed bath mats drives me crazy, it's torture on a machine. There's a history to why...

Some years ago I got us a front loader and our previous machine, a Hoover 720 top loader (one of the best, most trouble free machines ever made in this country), was retired. A while later my Mum phoned, asked if we had a machine we could sell very cheap to a lady at her church whose old machine had died. We decided to sell her the Hoover for $50, including me driving an hour each way to set up the machine in her laundry and show her how to use it.

Two days later there was a whiny message on my answer machine. "The machine youse sold me is leakin'." I tried to sort it out over the phone in case it was a loose hose or something but to no avail. I drove out there, checked it over very thoroughly and found nothing wrong. She was very unconvinced and distrusting. I asked her to use the machine in front of me, setting it to the same settings and washing the same items. She was clearly annoyed but complied. She got a pink fluffy rubber-backed bath mat and put it, alone, in the tub, selected lowest water level and a normal (heavy duty) wash. It filled very low, then it agitated. The spiral ramp agitator picked up the bath mat and swished it back and forth, scooping water up and throwing it over the side of the tub. Sudsy water everywhere. So that was the "leak". I explained that Hoovers have a very vigorous wash action and she should select the delicate cycle and at least half full, plus fit the splash shield I had given her to the top of the agitator. She was still not really convinced, she really wanted me to find and fix a "fault". Anyway I left, hoping that was it.
Two weeks later the "leak" reappeared - when I quizzed her over the phone, sure enough it was the bath mat again. She had forgotten to select delicate.

So now I hate those rubber backed bath mats, they are torture on a machine. I use a plain cotton mat that can go into the wash as part of a FULL LOAD.

Front loaders really wash better with at least a half load, it balances better and wash better too.

Chris.

My friend had one of these machines... Real workhorses, the wash action, rinse performance and distributing/spin action was awesome to watch!

Rinses filled near enough half up the door, and when it came to spin, the machine just flung itself into distribute full of rinse/wash water, it always balanced well, never needed a repair, was a very sturdy and reliable machine! Made some unusual but cool noises too!
