God Bless Khristy Male and her husband for having the sense to put these on Craigslist rather than the curb:

They said they belonged to her Aunt who kept them in pristine condition (you can always tell if the original stickers are still on the machines), and then were moved to their basement where they stood still for the last three years. But look what happened when I plugged the washer in without hesitation:

Two happy surprises, this being an A700(don't know that year well, at all), a beautiful chrome lint filter/softener dispenser well (missing the black softener cup, Khristy and her husband had no idea it was ever even there; I thought this model would just have the solid cap lint filter):

Any suggestions as to how to keep this sticker intact whilst I clean this machine will be appreciated:

Was Maytag the first to feature Electronic shut-off in the dryer?

EGAD! No lint-filter retainer screen! I shall have to do something about this!

(But there's a freakin' refrigerator light bulb behind the freakin' lint filter!!!! Am I happy!)

And a vintage black Maytag agitator that is so heavy and in such good condition that I can understand why this company got its stellar reputation (black cap on agitator is one I appropriated years ago).

Great score Ken! The bulb behind the lint filter was still happening into the 70's. I loved my electronic control HOH dryer. It was quiet and efficient, never any trouble. You're going to really enjoy this pair.

Lid is floating; Khristy and her husband didn't know about polypropylene ball hinges, can't blame them. Good people and were friendly and helpful. She's going to send me the original manuals when she finds them. Two beautiful Labs in the back. I wished them well on their move to a new home.

If any of you can tell me the vintages of these machines, I'd be grateful. I'm guessing around 1961 for the washer and 1962 for the dryer but have no literature. Also, any and all advice before I start taking them apart is solicited.
I wrote down the numbers because my camera and my eyes weren't good enough for the close-ups of the ID plates:

Washer is model # P(for PANK, I guess)A700,serial# 217963 MC
Dryer is model# P(for PANK, I guess)DE701,serial# 652881 MD

HOORAY!

Hi Ken ...

Oh; I'm so excited for you!!

Your wonderfully pink Maytag A700 washer was made in January 1964 and your beautiful dryer was made in February 1964. A true set!! :-)

You will LOVE washing with the A700; they are a wonderful machine. I so enjoy mine!

As to getting the label off; mine was "mutilated". There was no easy way to take it off. I have preserved as much as I can, but that glue was impossible. I tried heating it even with a steam iron and a thick towel to no avail.

I used "Goo Gone" to get the balance off and had to use lacquer thinner to get the awful glue off. I did keep the decal and have in on acid-free paper now.

Does your agitator have the baffle underneath? That baffle is great; it "pumps" water through the lint filter and forces it out the bottom creating loads of suds. Watch those towels; they always take 2 rinses!! :-)

And to think yours is all in pink no less!! :-)

Absolutely amazing ... ENJOY ...

Here's a pic of my A700S that I thought I'd share.

It shows my decal ... if I hadn't have removed it when I did, it would have had a short life!! :-)

I LOVE the tub light; that is a really nice feature.

The timed bleach injection is very, very nice. It recirculates the water the bottom of the tub. Within 4 minutes of the wash cycle, the bleach has been thoroughly recirculated with the wash water. Cool!

:-)

Now nobody can argue that the video in the above link is a true classic.

HOWEVER. . .

Should one wish to see a 1960 Maytag demonstrated to its fullest potential, one need only view last Thursday's episode of Mad Men on AMC and keep one's eye on Bettie Draper. I could not believe my eyes!

I wish I knew how to track down and capture an excerpt from a TV show and then post it here. But, alas, I do not.

Marty

Baffled

bajaespuma's profile picture
Geoff,

You're psychic. I just, JUST removed the agitator (came off like a glove) and discovered the 4 screws on the bottom, removed them, and discovered the baffle. It took me a while to figure it out, then I realized, that the Maytag engineers figured out how to incorporate the baffle into the design of the future turquoise Power-fin agitators with the flow paths between the fins. Clever, clever. Am washing all the parts with acid to remove scale, and will post pics when done.

Thanks for the video, now I know what to expect. Also, thank you so much for the dates. I really thought these machines would be older than that. Alas, mine is not a suds saver, but my next dream machines, besides a Hotpoint set, will be an A806SS and matching DG806.

Just curious. What's up with the gas access panel being on the right on the green dryer in the illustration? I thought maybe the negative had been flipped prior to the model numbers being added but the logos are in the right place on the control panels. All gas Maytag dryers I've seen have the panel on the lower left side.

It might be possible, with a digital SLR camera with a close up lens, to take a close-up of label and then "blow it up" and then even make a photocopy of the picture of the label.

Well, I've taken GregM's advice again and filled the machine with warm water and have allowed it to sit and warm up for several hours to moisten seals, warm gears, etc. Am now going downstairs to do a Mrs. Draper, so y'all won't hear from me for a while. Unless, of course, the damn thing don't work. Keep your fingers and whatever crossed.

Thank you all for your good wishes and for your inspiration. Never thought I would drive 400 miles for an old washer and dryer, but for the first time since I joined this group, I feel like I caught a catch. I will keep you posted. I really feel like I have to go out and buy a box of regular Tide for this beauty's maiden wash. Probably go to the Dime store and buy a bag of Chinese Tide with Phosphates(and tainted with G-d knows what). But, tomorrow IS another day. Exit, stage Mergatroid.

Very nice set you got there!!!

I have a parts list breakdown for my 1964 DE-750 dryer, which is the exact same as your 700 with the exception of pushbutton control panel. If you need any part #’s or have any questions, feel free to ask away!

The best thing about owning a vintage Maytag is that there are still plenty of parts available. On top of that, there are plenty of technicians around who have the tools and know-how about them in case you get caught in a bind. Neither is the case with my 63 Frigidaire washer that I recently acquired :(

The safety lid switch on the washer is one of the few things that isn't working, thus my shock and surprise upon examining the sticker in more detail. Good thing I was taught how to read 44 short years ago. Will post a pic when I find the bulb and get the thing working:

Isn't that the lint screen drawer on the right and not the gas access panel?

Ken, nice pair!
Great shape, too. The dryer lint filter parts should not be hard to find. Be aware it looks like you are missing the wire screen that goes over the spider, too. That's important to have as well. You can probably get a new plastic replacement. Note that the original screens were metal as well, not poly like the one in your pics. The electronic control 700 was one of the best HOH dryers ever made, IMHO. The washer is awesome, too.
