How do there Mark

Firstly welcome to the club.

Straight to second - I envy you owning a square door Bendix. One of thehe home economics rooms at secondary school had one of these machines and I made sure that the back desk, just in front of it, was mine. Such a quiet machine.

Model number wise, without a picture to know for sure, it could be one of a small clutch of models.

As far as I know, the longest lasting was model 7147. This came in two variants - 7147 and 7147B. The former has an all silver facia panel, whilst the latter had a brown and black stripe across the facia. There were also, at the very least, models 7122, 7125 and 7142 manufactured before the 7147.

The 7147B was the last of the square door bendix, before the new round door style was introduced.

All I can suggest is typing bendix 7147 (see picture below) or bendix 7147B (see next picture) into google and finding out just what spares are available (there will be someone on here who will be able to help more with the spares thing - unfortunately I am not very 'au fait' with that side of things).

You will be joining many people who are searching for Hotpoint Liberators - one of my personal favourites. The Zanussi machines you mention were models 1823 (cold fill only - 380rpm) and 1826 (hot and cold fill - 520rpm). The remaining Liberators were all pure Hotpoint design and are, in my opinion, are washing machine design classics.

Sorry that I cant be of more help re your search for a programmer/timer, but hopefully you will be able to confirm the modle number.

Cheers
Paul
(please post some piccies of your 'classic' machines - be great to see a surviving Square door Bendix)

BELOW IS MODEL 7147

white door machine - is this a Bendix 7122, 7125, 7142 or indeed is it a Philco?

Be really interested to know.

Wow, classic collection of machines, are they all with you??, or do you work at a repair shop etc??Congrats on the Bendix 7147, a true classic, whisper quiet and one of the biggest induction motors ever found in a domestic machine...I`ve got the matching dryer but awaiting the gods response for the washer??

I was in Cork a few months ago and managed to find a load of old spare parts in a couple of repaire shops...theres stuff out there, just need to hunt it down...

Morning Paul

That machine is a Philco Cyclotron, (I love that name, sounds substantial) and if my memory is working correctly its an Aus machine set...lovely machines, nicer with the steel trim doors me thinks!!!

When I worked at Trident, one of the girls got married and a friend had given her a washer, i plumbed it in for them , it was the 500spin Philco Cyclotron, first one I had ever seen in the flesh, love the way the programme indicator/selector moves around..

I don't suppose...

Anyone's got a picture of the more basic Bendix of this era? My grandma had one that went on for over a decade. I don't remember the model number, but as far as I remember it only had the red light, one rocker switch, and definitely one dial, with the all silver facia.

I think she got it towards the end of the 1970s, and it was still going strong when we moved to England in 1989 (mind you, so was her Electra fridge they'd got in 1967, although her Jackson cooker with the eye level grill and the door that fell off was replaced circa 1982 with a split-level cooker with the luxury of a digital analogue clock and a rotisserie!).

Bendix Autowasher Deluxe

Hi Simon,
Sorry I don't have a picture but I know the model you are referring to, it was the Autowasher Deluxe 7142A. It was a 500rpm spin model and the timer was advanced by the black "Start" rocker switch. The cycles (ITCL programs 1-9) were identical to the 7147, 7147A, 7147B and 7147PB.

Bendix Quiet Reliability!

Welcome Mark

Hi Mark,
Welcome to Automaticwasher.org.

Wow what a wonderful machine to own the Philco Bendix 7147 series were my favourite vintage washers. As for the model number it could be either a 7147 or a 7147A both were visually identical, You will need to remove the rear panel to confirm the model number; on the 7147 the Motor is mounted on brackets attached to the outer tub, on the 7147A the Motor is mounted on the back plate via two struts.

What are your machines symptoms? I as as the 7147 was prone to motor burn outs as a result of water contamination, water from the detergent dispenser used to run down the side of the outer tub and directly onto the Motor connector block, the connector block was moved to the opposite side on 7147A models onwards.

I look forward to your reply and more info on this wanderfull machine.

David

Flippin heck Mark - seems that you can't help stumbling across real classics. Square door Bendix, Classic pre-Z series Zanussi.........keep on searching, you are obviously very adept at it. That Liberator may be just around the corner (keep your eye out for any Hoover Matchboxes too!!!!).

How do Mike.....cheers for sorting out that square door mystery for me. I had it badged as a Bendix in may archives, but had always been uncomfortable with that. I had a feeling it might be a Philco. Have you had chance to re-examine that 3022 picture you sent me - the one with apparrently extra buttons between high/low heat and the timer? Another Hoover mystery I fear.

Simon and David....the closest I have got to the 7142A is this drawing from a Which magazine - they reckon it is definately a 7142A + a spare part manual for the 7122 (what machine was that???) and the 7142.

Cheers
paul

Hi Paul,
That's a 7142A alright!
I have never seen or heard of a 7122 before, might it have been a cold fill only version of the 7142A for continental Europe? Just guessing though!

David

Ooops!

Sorry Mark, forgot to welcome you! So rude. Welcome to the group, looking forward to seeing some of your beasties!

Paul, David, thanks for the suggestions/photos, but I'm convinced it only had one dial, the details of the number of buttons/switches is hazy though. To be fair, I last saw it 18 years ago though!

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a deluxe - wonder if the 7122 was a more basic one? Knowing my grandad, he wouldn't have been willing to pay for the more expensive version for my gran!
