My 1960 Kenmore center post is rotten. What about using a sheath made of plastic or metal? If it fit over the existing center post (a really good fit), couldn't that be done? It would have to be a tight fit, but if it was the new donut gasket should seal it ok. Treat the center post with rust converter and away we go. What does anyone think? Dumb idea? Be honest!!!!!!!!

I would still give this a try (from your earlier thread)

If you can't find a new one or suitable donor...
...you could try taking the baseplate to a metal fabrication shop to see if they can make a new tube and install it on the baseplate. A shop that deals in welding tubing for automotive use like roll cages and frames would probably be a good start.
