Hi All!
My family has been griping about a funny noise that our Maytag dryer has been making lately. I went back to Syracuse a few weeks ago and found that it makes a strange flutter sound when it starts, then a rhythmic thump as the drum turns. I figured that the belt, pulley, back rollers, and Teflon glides were worn, so I ordered the parts and put them in. Unforunately, none of these new parts solved the noise problem. John, alias Coldspot66, said that the fan is probably the cause. I took a good look at the fan. It seemed fine- solid on the shaft with no wobbling. I came to the conclusion that the drum might have come out of round. Over thanksgiving I pulled it apart again. The drum seemed fine, so I took another look at the fan. When I took it out, I found that the flat side on the plastic was worn out so that the fan was turning fairly free on the motor shaft. I got a new fan, and, you guessed it, the dryer is as quiet as when it was new. John, I should have never doubted you! BTW, the new replacement rollers are very poor quality. I ended up putting back the original ones. The Teflon glides were still OK, but it was the right time to change them. The original pulley and rollers had bronze bushings. The replacements are a silver color. I bet they won't last 30 years. I took some pics as I was working to share.

nice couple together

Really nice machines, very clean inside and out. The only thing I would change is the exhaust for the gas dryer. I am a firm believer in solid piping for the exhaust especially with gas, just a suggestion.

Hey Bobby-

What a beautiful set of 'tags! I would love to find a set just like that!! ((But with the lighted panels, of course..))

Never seen a dryer taken that far apart; thanks for sharing!

I have the exact Maytag gas dryer. I bought the dryer second hand in 1986 and has been in use all these years with no repairs.

There's a limit on file-size (as in megabytes) that the server will accept for uploaded pictures. Many digital camera nowadays of high resolution (megapixels) generate very large files, both in megabytes (file size) and pixels (image size). Use your photo editing software to reduce the image size to no more than 1024x768 pixels (800x600 is even better) and the file size will reduce accordingly. If you want to keep a copy of the original intact, then save the changed image under a new file name and upload it. If you don't need an original, save the changed image back to the same file name.

Don't some GEs have toggleswitches?

Hi Bobby!

*WAVES*

What a lovely and classic set!

I also noticed a GE gas dryer to the left of the Maytag.
Collectible? Old /prior daily-driver? Working and connected?

Enquiring minds want to know!

Good work, Bobby - that's a nice set worth saving. I've done quite a few of those fans and it's clear, on most dryers, when the user is a fan of softener sheets - waxy build-up everywhere. None to be found here though, that dryer is spotless!

Hey all. Thanks for the good words. That set has an interesting background. I bought the dryer in Boston for myself. My grandmother back home had a 606 set and she always complained the dryer was too small. (HOH) I told her about mine and I said I would keep an eye open to get one for her. She said that I should just give mine to her. At 80 something years old, how could I argue? So she got the 608 and loved it. A couple years later I found the matching washer in Western Mass. and brought that to her. I put the 606 washer aside, my aunt took the 606 dryer (which she still uses). When my grandmother retired from GE in 1978 she was given a certificate for any GE product she wanted up to a certain amount. She picked a washer/ dryer set. The dryer is to the left of the 608, still hooked up and running. The matching washer was taken by another aunt who killed it fast. She can't seem to keep any appliance for more than a few years. They were a great pair, but the washer timer contacts always gave trouble. It was that new interchangeable parts timer, a disaster. I am trying to put a pic of the GE dryer and the 606 washer, but it won't let me.

Jon,
re the flexible exhaust:
I agree with you, but this dryer gets so much use I have to clean the ducts every year, and the way it's located along the basement wall, rigid duct would be too much of a PIA. The semi-rigid duct is what I really should have on there. I'll change it to that the next clean out. BTW, you should come to our Yankee wash-ins!
