Allrighty, dude. These are raw video clips out of my still camera, rather large files for the time they run. Limited-time availability.

EcoActive Wash with 3 oz. of Foca (15 sec clip, 5 MB)

Active+ Wash Profile, Medium Water Level, 5 oz. Foca, 3 oz. oxybooster (15 sec clip, 5 MB, higher video/sound quality)
Active+ Wash Profile, Medium Water Level, 5 oz. Foca, 3 oz. oxybooster (1 min 30 sec clip, 8 MB, lower video/sound quality)
Active+ wash is the 2nd most aggressive action, next below Maximum wash (I think). Three large bath towels in this load, some other towels and cloths, a LOT of socks.

Well if this thread's out to me it would be right for me to be the first to respond right? So I am responding first with my usual batch of curious questions. First of all, how aggressive is the Max Wash option? I can tell the cycle being videoed here was the Active Wash cycle. Am I right? The machine sounds similar to the Kenmore Oasis Agitator version. How similar is the wash action to the Agitator Oasis.

That's because F&P and Whirlpool had a technology sharing agreement. So there are very similar key components found in Cabrio/Oasis washers that originally were found in F&P washers.

Quick question Glen, with the older F&P washers before they introduced the locking lid, how did they stop the tub so fast when the lid was raised? Is there a tub brake in that machine or is it simply the motor stopping it?

A tiny bit more aggressive than Active+, by way of a longer wash time and/or a different rhythm, which changes slightly depending on size of load and water level.

There is no "Active Wash" cycle that can be selected by name via control panel options. It is the Active+ wash profile, selected by the machine itself in response to how the load "feels" in combination with its choice of medium water level and my selection of medium-high soil level. High soil level probably would have been maximum wash profile. I've rarely seen the machine choose maximum profile ... although there is a specific option to select it manually.

As Bob says, the Oasis/Cabrio/Bravos (and now of course, AquaSmart), and F&P agitator toploaders, all use F&P's SmartDrive motor ... so certainly they will sound similar. If your last statement is intended as a question ... I don't know ... I've never seen an agitator Oasis run. Your machine (of which we are still waiting for videos) is an agitator Oasis, yes?

Jamie, there is no mechanical brake. It's done electrically by way of controlling power/voltage on the SmartDrive motor.

Subtle Audio Differences in Agitators

Unless the latest Fisher and Paykel models have a quieter SmartDrive system, their agitations seem to be more pronounced and of a distinctive groaning noise than the Kenmore and Whirlpool brands that I have heard on YouTube. Even the faster or agressive agitation speeds of WP and KM models to me sound quieter than the F&P's. Again, the playing field could be more of a level affair if newer F&P's have an improved, quieter motor system.--Laundry Shark

Roper Version?

By the way, is their by chance a Roper version of these HE toploaders or not? And if so, what is the Roper version called??--Laundry Shark

Glenn - how is the machine as far as gentleness to the clothes? Do you notice any pulls on towels and the like from the aggressive wash action?

Sharkey, my GWL08 isn't as prominently "grindy"-sounding. I have a couple videos of the 10-pairs-of-jeans load in it, but the files are 75MB / 14 mins and 35 MB / shorter. Just a guess ... there may not be an HE wash plate offering under Roper being that it's a "budget" brand, but maybe all the standard-fill TLs will be gone at some point in the future. Or the direct-drive tranny design for standard TLs could conceivably be changed to the tranny-less SmartDrive mechanism.

Andrew, I've never noticed any damage to any clothing that could be attributed to the machine. I can think of one hand towel that has a ripped edge-seam, but that appears to be a quality flaw. I believe when I noticed the problem it had last been washed in the Calypso. :-) Note that the aggressive agitation the video shows isn't necessarily the usual choice it makes. Rupert chewed a hole in a pair of jeans some years ago, and while the hole is frayed around the edges, it hasn't otherwise ripped or torn. Jeans typically trigger a strong wash action and longer time, to the point that I occasionally drop the soil level to normal/light.
