Ohh I'm so excited, I'm going to leave work right at 5pm tonight. I should have them unpacked and moved into the basement by 6:30pm. I will post a picture of the new arrivals at 7:00pm central time.

YAY, washers are fun, washer and dryer sets are fun too!

Hmmmm... Pink and all porcelain... Kenmore, Maytag or Frigidaire... Hmmmmm... Could this be the 1956 Unimatic set that would make his Frigidaire collection complete?

The mind boggles...

SPACEMATES???
That would be nice, oh I sure hope it is a Westinghouse Spacemate set then I could stack them and get two for the price of one, space wise that is, not to mention that splashy front-loading action. And I have plenty of Dash left!

1956 Unimatic set in pink???, ohhhh, now I hope it is a Pink '56 Unimatic/Filtrator set, just like the set at the Kansas Museum, oh that would be great, I now hope its a '56 Frigidaire set and as Peter said my Unimatic collection would be complete.

Matching control towers? IN PINK??? Oh boy do I hope its a '57 Frigidaire Control tower set in Pink, that's a washer/dryer set dreams are made out of.

Whatever they are this set is a keeper!

Unimatic?

roto204's profile picture
Hmm, something's odd about the way those are configured. Of course, it could be my eyes...

...I'm thinking not a control-tower set, because of the odd way the cabinet interfaces with the bottom (unless that's just packing bits)...the other control-towers I've looked at don't have that...unless I've just never seen the magic side that DOES...

I'm betting '56 Unimatic...but then again, I've never seen Westies SpaceMates from this era...

(*puts thinking cap back on and eagerly awaits Robert's photos*)

Oh they're just beautiful, 1957 Pink Lady Kenmore's in MINT shape. Looks like both machines will need a bit of work mechanically, but there is not a scratch or chip on the pink porcelain anywhere and the control panels are in wonderful shape. I'm a very happy camper tonight.

What is neat about this dryer too is its a 50amp high speed dryer with an 8400 watt element!

More info and pictures to come later, I must go play now.

Hi everyone and thanks for the congratulations. A very nice man contacted me who lives north of Spokane, WA. He’s a car collector and a few years ago when his elderly neighbors were moving out he thankfully decided to save their beautiful pink vintage washer and dryer set that was in their basement. He had kept the set for a while but decided he wanted the garage space for cars and that’s when he went looking and found our web site. He contacted me and asked if I would be interested in these, how could I turn them down? $1,250 later with shipping here they are, and I couldn’t be more happy with them. My old farm LK will be broken down for parts that I will keep to use in the future to keep this pink beauty machine running for the rest of my life.

As I said above, what’s neat about this dryer too is it’s a rare Kenmore “High-Speed" dryer. They only made these from 1955 thru 1959 or 1960. The gas version of the high speed was made for a few years more after that, but not too long. It doesn’t work by baking the clothes, the operating thermostat is actually set to only 125-130 degrees at the high mark, so it’s a relatively cool dryer. What it does is use an 8400 watt electric element (the gas version uses a 37,000 BTU burner) to get the temperature up and hold it up very, very fast. It also came with the room heater attachment which I will photograph over the weekend. I’m going to work on the dryer first this weekend as it should only take 10 or so hours to do. The washer will be a bigger project, but I have all the parts and I’m ready start working on that next week.

Here are a few more shots…

Sad to break down your farm '57 LK that you painstakingly restored for parts, but the Pink Lady is definitely worth it, IMHO!

I must say as soon as I seen that pink peeking out of the packing I about had a heart attack! I was thinking if that stinker got my set of 56's I'm driving to MN and sitting on his door step until Neal says "Robert, would you just give the damn things to her, it's been a month and I'm tired of walking over her to get into the house"!LOL

Why was it called "Pregar" RotoSwirl????...was it from the "SplashMatic" book of marketing perhaps!!!

parts

You sure you want to break down the farm LK, after all that WORK?

So the high speed electric version was 8400 watts instead of 5600, what was the difference in BTU output of the gas versions? I imagine the gas versions were made longer because the gas line for a dryer would more than enough capacity for a high speed version, whereas the high speed electric version calls for a totally different outlet (electric range type outlet and cord) and heavier wiring.

Look at all the choices for water temps! Neat having MEDIUM and COOL in addition to the usual HOT/WARM/COLD choices

Westy:
The dryer needs to be taken apart and cleaned. The blower needs lubrication and the heaters need to be checked. I took the back panel off of the dryer and took out the blower, there was a birds nest in the blower housing, they must have come down thru the vent tube. I checked the heaters with a meter and they test fine, YAY, that is the crucial part. It would be hard to fine that 8400 watt element which is really a two elements on one buss a 5600 watt and a 2800 watt. It also needs a new lint filter as the felt on the old one is bad. The filter is still available from Sears parts. I should be drying by Saturday night!

As for the washer, when I turn the washer tub I hear a crunching sound which I suspect is simply rust off of the center post which will need to be painted sanded and painted with POR-15 paint. While the agitator shaft and spin tube and centerpost bearings probably still work fine, they will be “rickety” from age. As Whirlpool and Kenmore machines age they become louder with more banging and scraping noises from general wear. This machine is so pretty that it deserves brand new parts and to run like I just order it out of the ’57 Spring & Summer catalog whether it works or not.

Louis:
isn't it possible to put the pink cabinet on your restored machine
While that could be done, it would be a very difficult process. On Whirlpool and Kenmore belt drive washers the entire mechanism and wash tubs are suspended from a baseplate that is connected to the top corners of the cabinet. That would involved dropping and re-hanging the entire insides of the washer. It would be easier actually to just rebuild this machine.

Bethann:
oooOh good thing it was a Kenmore then! The lint-lite is fun, I don't know whether it works, but it will when I'm done with it. I will adjust it to lite when there is only a little bit of lint in the screen.

Mike:
Someone here years ago made up the “Pregnant Roto-Swirl” name because it’s so much fatter than the Super Roto-Swirl agitator of the 60’s and 70’s.

Kenmore1978:
The gas version has a 37,000BTU output. As for Keeping the White Lady Kenmore, NO. If I lived in a mansion I could keep both, but I don’t and I want to ensure that Mr. Pink runs for another 40 years. When you have as many washing machines as some of us do, you have to be sensible with what you can keep and what must go. The turquoise Kenmore set is heading to Louisville, KY to complete a 1964 Turquoise kitchen!

Later in the 60's, the Roto-Swirl agitator lost weight, got some slimming vertical ribs and was renamed Super Roto-Swirl. This earlier one we nicknamed "pregnant" because it is fatter. There is a comparison pic between them somewhere.

Robert, that set is sooooo sweet! But the important questions are: 1) will you keep this set together? and 2) who goes to storage/gets sold to make room?

Hi Peter,

Well this set of two will replace three machines in my collection. The turquoise '64 washer and dryer have been sold and are going to Louisville. My '57 will be broken down for parts and the rest disposed of so there will be room to have both the pink washer and dryer hooked up and running together!

Restored '57 LK

"The gas version has a 37,000BTU output."

So what was the "slow/normal" version's output?

As for Keeping the White Lady Kenmore, NO. If I lived in a mansion I could keep both, but I don’t and I want to ensure that Mr. Pink runs for another 40 years. When you have as many washing machines as some of us do, you have to be sensible with what you can keep and what must go.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that you should KEEP the restored white LK, I know there is limited room. I just thought that after all that work, you would sell the white LK whole to some person who lusts after one, since the parts in it are not, for the most part, obsolete, so there would be no need to cannabalize it for the Pink Lady, just buy new parts to bring it up to snuff.

Good point Kenmore1978, I have all brand new transmission and spin tube parts to use in the new pink Lady. But what I really want to save is what’s long gone, all the electrical switches (water temps, suds saver, end of cycle and unbalanced bell, that's right I said BELL). But with that said belt-drive Whirlpool parts are now fast becoming NLA and now is the time to stock up on them because they will be like Unimatic parts soon, gone for ever!

Only way that model and anyone else for that matter got into those "dress maker" suits was via a good Playtex rubber girdle and "waspie" waist cincher.

Back on topic:

What a great find! Such a beautiful color of pink! Why oh why won't appliance makers go back to colors? Am so tired of stainless steel and or white. Don't wish my kitchen/laundry room to look like a hospital or morgue.

wash basket capacities

Hi Robert,i had been wondering for a little while now about the capacities of your 52 WP,the 57 Lady, and the 64 KM.
Are the wash tubs in these three machines the same size?

Belt drive parts

"But with that said belt-drive Whirlpool parts are now fast becoming NLA and now is the time to stock up on them because they will be like Unimatic parts soon, gone for ever!"

To WP's credit, the fact that they used the same basic mechanism for SO long and that KM in particular was SUCH a good seller means that there are TONS of new and used parts out there, as well as machines to cannabalize if necessary. Unfortunately, this can't be said of other manufacturers like Frigidaire, Speed Queen, who kept switching mechanisms every so often. The "Champions of Design Longevity" other than WP, seem to be Maytag, Norge, & GE, which makes older models much easier to restore and even upgradeable to better than original.

Very Happy for you Robert!

Robert,
I can't get over how beautiful your new set is! It is like you just had them delevered in 1957! I am so glad that the guy that sold them to you, found you. It was meant to be.
I totally understand that you need to brake down your 57 from the farm. I do want you to know however your hard work on that machine, and the outcome has been shared with many. Everytime Les and I want to show all of the hard work that goes into some of the machines the club members find, we always go to the pictures of the restoration of your lovely 1957 Lady Kenmore. It always hit's a home run as far as turning the attitude of the person that we are showing, around. They are so amazed at the outcome of that washer, that they actually ask for us to go back to the pictures of when you found it on the farm! So in short, always have your pictures of your Alberdeen Farm Lady Kenmore up so that we can share with them the talent involved in this artform.
Thanks for always sharing your finds!
Can't wait to hear about the first load that you do!
Brent

Thank you Brent for your kind words. Oh after all that work I went through to restore that monster and photograph the whole process, you bet I'm going to keep those pictures up on the site. Like Lucy and Samantha the white Lady Kenmore will live on in pictures forever!

Robert, great find!

Or they found you-even betterLOL. These machines are absolutely gorgeous and the dryer's history with the 8400wt element absolutely blows my mind. I can't imagine why I never spotted these in childhood. You keep us posted on these, we like to hear all about them.
