Does it spin. If it does not spin but the motor makes noise like it is "trying to spin" it is a broken drive coupler.

Coupler?

Easy and cheap to fix. Not as easy as changing the belts on a Maytag, but not too difficult.
Has the machine been overloaded a lot? The coupler is designed to be a weak piece so that if something jams the machine, the coupler will fail, instead of the more-expensive and difficult to repair transmission or motor. Overloading the machine will shorten the life of the coupler. Normally you ought to expect about a decade of life from a coupler under average conditions.

The link is to a website with pretty good instructions on how to fix appliances. Look up how to replace the coupler on a Whirlpool/Sears Kenmore Direct Drive washer.

Good Luck,
Dave
