I've been going through some old pictures and I thought it would be fun to post these again. Many of the older members remember back around 2000/2001 I used to take my camera to the estate sales and photograph the houses, people and appliances. I must have taken and posted over 1000 pictures during that time (at least it felt like that). Many times back then I would add my own silly commentary to the pictures as well, which you will clearly see. I've pulled out just a few to share again (of the washer/dryer/dishwasher pictures), this thread is gonna take a minute or two to load once I have it done, but it will be worth it...

Thanks for posting Robert - great to take a trip back in time. There were some great machines in the bunch - and I agree with the Whirlpool. It shoulda been in the back of the Jeep! And a push button Tag, and also a 141? Wow, who would have thought. Greg - that must be your new living room furniture. I see you've left a Diet Coke on the coffee table without a coaster - shame on you! Ben |

Robert - THANKS for sharing the pictures. I have never been to an estate sale, but I've been told that some of the older parts of Charlotte would be a great place to do that. Now I'm more interested, for sure! I LOVE the washer in the first two pics. I don't know why, but BOL machines intrigue me at times. I have a machine in storage that has the same blue basket and bakelite straight vane. Mine has obviously seen a lot more use as the single layer of porcelain has worn and the basket is all rusty. I've come across some of the other machines in your pics: I had a machine just like the one in pic 25 given to me in trade. I in turn gave it to my buddy who loves GEs and it went right back out into the washing world after it got a clutch and a pump. It may still be out there washing now. I have a washer identical to the one in pic 42 in my trailer. I wish the cabinet on mine was nicer. I had never seen one of those before I got it. I have a special place for the washer in pic 43. That was my 3rd machine I rebuilt. The two machines before it were Kenmore black panel machines, so this one was great because of it's vintage. I put a lot of work into that machine, and it was my first bearing job. I could not get the spin tube to line up in the existing bearings without binding, and it ran like brand new after. I loved the splined but black agitator and the finger-nail cap. I wish I had that machine back.... I have a washer in storage that matches the dryer in one of the last pics - the dryer that is next to the new DD washer. I love those Whirlpools.... Thanks again Robert, this was a fun read/view! |

Fortunately he had the grace and social skill to handle such situations with aplomb. Yeah when one of the old biddies from the estate sale companies got nervious with me and my camera generally I told them that they can go ***blank*** themselves and the high horse they came riding in on! Then we left, with pictures safely in camera LOL. Hmmmmm, I don't exactly remember why I posted this caption, but something tells me I had a good reason back then. |

Wow, Rob - we NEVER see anything like these appliances anymore! I remember the very first sale that you, Scott and I went to in 2000 - it was 6 blocks from my house and in the basement there was a 1960 Frigidaire set. Now, half the time we don't even get access to the basement! Plus, sales are moving farther out into the suburbs. It's just not worth it to drive 15 miles to look at bad '80's furniture! It would be nice to start taking pictures again - there just isn't much to get excited about. Plus - Robert, you don't look like you've aged at all. HMMM...What's your secret? Diet? Exercise? Photoshop? Hi Scott - I hope you are doing well in Los Angeles! |

These pics are great, I took some pics of sales here for a while too, I'll look to see if I have them on a disc somewhere. Mostly boring old black-panel Hotpoints and Kenmores around here though... That first convention was so much fun - I think I even have a picture of Louis in a fur coat around here somewhere! Wasn't there a hat too? Now I have to hunt! |

Hey thanks Robert, hadnt realised what a sharp devil you are with that camera, had only seen it on Glens pics, should have known better!!!.... Oh what fun, I tell you estate sailing with these guys was a blast, we have nothing like it here, I found the Sweeper Vac right up in the attic of a massive house, tucked in the eaves under a pile of stuff, all of $5...it cost a little more to ship along with my Electrolux XXX but was worth it.. Cheers, Mike p.s.what is your secret to ageing??? |

Great pictures Robert. Some of the pictures of the washers brought back wonderful memories of my childhood helping Grandma, aunts, and neighbors on wash day. Thanks David |

Couldn't resist the Piano Key Lady K with the Suds-saver. You've gotta look real close to see it on the dial, located in a most unusual position, but the two hoses in the sink are dead giveaways. And how 'bout that Visimatic with a working timer. What a sweetheart you are Robert. Nice to know that all the Unimatics went home with you, the lucky little leprechauns. Top O' the Evnin" ta yis all !!!!!!! Go have a bit o' the drop= Irish for a good stiff drink or two or four ;'D |

Those pics are great! Not having basements in California, I loved peeking into the basements of Minnieapolis and Omaha during Robert's and Greg's estate sale excursions. Thanks for reposting those, Robert! I especially like the 1964 or 65 Westy top loader with the black agitator with a big W on the cap. How cool is that?!

A question for Robert (or anyone else who might be in-the-know): Concerning the 'very early' Westinghouse TL pictured near the top of this thread, is that one of the Easy-made machines, or is it a true Westinghouse? And how can one tell an Easy-made from the first real Westinghouse TLers? The agitator looks Easy-esque to me... |

One of my favorite pictures was the Pearl Baily Front Loading Westinghouse, such a beautiful machine. Wonder if anyone bought it? |

This is the first time I have had the displeasure of seeing one of those "fake" Frigidaire's and I must say as a 1-18 owner I can agree with others on here, it makes you feel sad, and sick all at the same time... That must have been a horrible day for those of you who loved GM/Frigidaire when you saw the changes. I was but a child then...

Hi Frigilux That Westy TL pictured was the first generation agitator washer made by Westinghouse. I believe the Easy-made Westy's made in the early 60's had solid tubs, but I may be wrong. I've never seen one, but in Tide ads, the control panel of the Easy-built machine had the cycle timer in the center of the control panel. My Dad was an engineer for Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1965 my Mom was replacing her 1957 (I think) Westy slant front because (OK...true confessions time...this stays in the club) I pulled the plastic tube off the pump which made a stream of water flow out the bottom of the machine and my mom thought there was a hole in the tub. I wanted her to buy a Westy top loader. She ended up buying the flat-front tumbler Laundromat that was the exact match to the top loader pictured in Robert's estate sale visit. Same control panel. I always wondered how long the Westy slant front would have lasted without my "help." It washed for a family of eight for eight years and only needed a boot and belt replacement. It was not a bad machine at all. My Mom loved it and was afraid she would not be happy with an agitator washer. Looking back, I can see why she thought it was the best thing since sliced bread after using a wringer washer for her large family. I had always wanted my Mom to buy a Frigidaire washer, like the Unimatic her mom had, but with my Dad working for Westy, that was out of the question. My grandparents bought my Mom several appliances over the years, like a dishwasher and a clothes dryer, and they were always Frigidaire -- much to my Dad's chagrin. |

It was a lot of fun participating in those sales by these pictures. I looked forward to the new ones every week. Estate saleing in 2001 was a lot of fun. We don't have something like it overhere. I remember that Amana. Before this club existed I used to browse the websites of the American appliance companies. The Amana were interesting because most models had stainless steel baskets and the spinspeeds of the TOL models was 710rpm instead of 640rpm. Jeff, what's the model number of yours? IIRC it wasn't a fur coat but a loose fur collar that I draped around like a stola. LOL. I think I still have the picture somewhere but I'm not going to post it. I have seen quite enough pictures of me with those horrible glasses with blue lenses. LOL |

Concerning the 'very early' Westinghouse TL pictured near the top of this thread, is that one of the Easy-made machines, or is it a true Westinghouse? That was 100% Westinghouse Eugene, prob from around 1966 or so. IIRC it wasn't a fur coat but a loose fur collar that I draped around like a stola. LOL. I think I still have the picture somewhere but I'm not going to post it. I have seen quite enough pictures of me with those horrible glasses with blue lenses. LOL I like that picture of you Louis in the blue lens glasses, I think its very cute. But never fear, I'm sure Greg has a picture of you in that Mink Collar, and when he finds it ;) "Click here to POST this to Discuss-o-Mat" LOL. |

I have a time fill Maytag very similar to #21, but without suds saver. Was the red button on top of the control panel the Return Suds Switch? I don't see any marking on the timer dial for suds return. |

So how was suds returned, please.
I have an old Hamilton dryer that uses a screw in glass fuse of 4.5 amps or something like that to protect the motor. |

I'd never seen this thread and really enjoyed looking at all the estate-sale-appliance-photos AND the AW member photos! Are the group shots from the 2002 convention / wash-in? I recognize two members from Europe, Mike & Louis. Also how fun to see my "neighbors" Rich (Golittlesport) and Gary there too!
I'd love to have a few of those machines! That first KM, the 900/902 Maytags, that '57? WP washer, both the TL and FL Westinghouse's and that mid-70's KM with the window in the lid. Is that actually a factory installed window?
Thanks Eugene for dragging this one out of the archives!
