I've been going through some old pictures and I thought it would be fun to post these again. Many of the older members remember back around 2000/2001 I used to take my camera to the estate sales and photograph the houses, people and appliances. I must have taken and posted over 1000 pictures during that time (at least it felt like that). Many times back then I would add my own silly commentary to the pictures as well, which you will clearly see. I've pulled out just a few to share again (of the washer/dryer/dishwasher pictures), this thread is gonna take a minute or two to load once I have it done, but it will be worth it...

How FANTASTIC to see these pictures again! I was along for many of these trips and it's interesting even now, seeing the pictures of the laundry machines, I can remember the geographic location of some of the houses, the situations and some of the other things that were in the same houses. How fun!

And if we had a couple of "do-over" chances there would be a few of those machines coming home today....

The Maytag 160 pushbutton, the Westy top load washer, and, and ....

Sadly, the estates sales today aren't what they were even five years ago. Too many butt-ugly all white Kenmores now.

Thanks for posting Robert - great to take a trip back in time. There were some great machines in the bunch - and I agree with the Whirlpool. It shoulda been in the back of the Jeep! And a push button Tag, and also a 141? Wow, who would have thought.

Greg - that must be your new living room furniture. I see you've left a Diet Coke on the coffee table without a coaster - shame on you!

Robert -

THANKS for sharing the pictures. I have never been to an estate sale, but I've been told that some of the older parts of Charlotte would be a great place to do that. Now I'm more interested, for sure!

I LOVE the washer in the first two pics. I don't know why, but BOL machines intrigue me at times. I have a machine in storage that has the same blue basket and bakelite straight vane. Mine has obviously seen a lot more use as the single layer of porcelain has worn and the basket is all rusty.

I've come across some of the other machines in your pics:

I had a machine just like the one in pic 25 given to me in trade. I in turn gave it to my buddy who loves GEs and it went right back out into the washing world after it got a clutch and a pump. It may still be out there washing now.

I have a washer identical to the one in pic 42 in my trailer. I wish the cabinet on mine was nicer. I had never seen one of those before I got it.

I have a special place for the washer in pic 43. That was my 3rd machine I rebuilt. The two machines before it were Kenmore black panel machines, so this one was great because of it's vintage. I put a lot of work into that machine, and it was my first bearing job. I could not get the spin tube to line up in the existing bearings without binding, and it ran like brand new after. I loved the splined but black agitator and the finger-nail cap. I wish I had that machine back....

I have a washer in storage that matches the dryer in one of the last pics - the dryer that is next to the new DD washer. I love those Whirlpools....

Thanks again Robert, this was a fun read/view!

Oh and of course who can forget that rare window lid Kenmore washer that we found!

Inside that RARE WINDOW LID Kenmore, I bet that Penta-Vane agitator made for some splashy action against that window...

Jeff, the pushbutton Kenmores in #16 are the one last shining moment in the history of Kenmore laundry. Style wise it has been steadily downhill ever since. That set (or insert any top line set of the time) in harvest gold was the dream of every housewife in 1974.

Interestingly looking at the dryer, it looks like the "Sears Best" sticker had fallen off and was taped back on, lest this particular homemaker was going to let anyone forget that she had the very best!

I never did realize, however, that the "Penta Swirl" agitator was ever used in this machine. I thought all the ones of this style had used the Variflex agitator.

Most times, the ladies running the estate sales were pretty nice, but I can remember a number of times, such as in picture #5, where poor Robert was verbally "slapped" by certain of them, either for taking pictures or looking at the machines because they "weren't for sale." Sigh. Fortunately he had the grace and social skill to handle such situations with aplomb.

Yeah when one of the old biddies from the estate sale companies got nervious with me and my camera generally I told them that they can go ***blank*** themselves and the high horse they came riding in on! Then we left, with pictures safely in camera LOL.

Hmmmmm, I don't exactly remember why I posted this caption, but something tells me I had a good reason back then.

1960 Hotpoint

Robert the first dryer mt mom had was a 1959 Hotpoint, what triggered the memory was the dial on the panel, and I remember the instructions inside the door too.
I can't remember if ours had the lint trap like that though... I do remember the perforated drum though...
Thanks for sharing all the pictures.

Thanks! Great photos!
Nothing wrong with those old 'Tags except someone should have cleaned up that oil. The things are likely still going strong, besides it would have been unnatural to see one that didn't spit some oil.

All those straight-vane Whirly/Kenmore brutes-----they were everywhere years ago. The electric version of pounding your clothes on a rock.
That Westy perf-tub brought back some memories.
I was surprised not to see some Frigidaires!

That Eureka is a stylish looking old vacuum I'll bet you do wish you had snatched up!

Oh yes! There's that Apex vacuum. It cleaned up really nice. RJ got that one when I was getting ready to move.

I hope the Martha Washington thing stokes someone's memory. I remember the caption vividly but I can't remember what it was about.

Greg's visits and visits to him were and are so much fun!

Robert, thanks so much for the memories!! I remember back in 2000-2001 when you were doing this. I always looked forward to either Saturday evening or Sunday morning when you would get all the pictures posetd. What fun. When you had the first wash-in in Aug. of 2001 that was the first time I had ever been to an estate sale. I know that it was a lot of work for you to post all those pictures with your fun captions but believe me I really appreciated and enjoyed them. Terry

thanks for the KDS-14 photo

My mother gutted the kitchen of our 1930's-era house in San Diego within a month of moving in, in late 1961. While a heavy duty white gas range was tossed out, the overall result was a state of the art 1961 kitchen with maple cabinets, white Formica (door hardware pulls matched the counters...), SS electric cooktop and double wall oven by Frigidaire, an enclosure for the GE fridge, and the piece de resistance, a brand new built in KA KDS-14, 1961 or 62 model (I can't remember if she finished the remodel by the end of 61 or not, but the project didn't seem to take too long, I only remember a few weeks of fast food and cooking on a hot plate in the laundry room...next to the 1958 GE Filter Flo and matching gas dryer, of course...and no I don't think Mom ever bought the Air Freshener tablets).

I remember the control panel of the KA perfectly, and we only used Rinse-Hold and Normal cycles. NEVER the Utility cycle, probably because my mother wasn't into reading manuals, and since she didn't know what the Utility button did, no one ever pushed it. In the 10 additional years we lived in that house, I don't think anyone EVER used the Utility cycle.

Anyway, the one thing I cannot recall is the color of the front panel. The surviving photos of the kitchen don't show the KA, they were taken from the KA side of the room and show the oven and fridge. Does anyone know if KAs were adaptable to custom wood panels in the early 1960s? I sort of seem to remember a panel that matched the cabinets, but I can't remember if it was actually wood, or maybe brown metal that came close to matching the cabinets. The front was definitely not stainless steel.

Hotpoint Dryer

Jeff, the reason for the clean out panel in the Hotpoint dryer is that both the LB, blower model and LC, condenser model shared the same basic inner perforated drum and solid outer tub construction. Because of that, lint would accumulate between the tubs. Sharing this design, the original design Hamilton dryers had cleanout ports in their drums and Frigidaire Filtrators gave some access for cleanout when the Filtrator cartridge was removed. Later, the Sheer Look Filtrators had a clean out port on the rear of the drum to help with this task. Some of the condenser washer-dryer combinations had panels in the inner basket that gave access to the outer tub so that the lint could be removed from thermostats and other places where it lodged.

If this lady saw the stuff behind that cleanout panel, she would probably think it was insulation, which it had become, but not in a good way. That's sort of like some owners of Maytag HOH dryers who thought that the lint buildup on the revolving Dynamic Disc lint filter was part of the filter and worried that a service person had removed and not replaced a vital part of the machine when he cleaned the mat from the filter.

That little plastic button at the top of the door was the mounting tab for a little plastic cage which held an air freshener tablet.

Wow, Rob - we NEVER see anything like these appliances anymore! I remember the very first sale that you, Scott and I went to in 2000 - it was 6 blocks from my house and in the basement there was a 1960 Frigidaire set. Now, half the time we don't even get access to the basement! Plus, sales are moving farther out into the suburbs. It's just not worth it to drive 15 miles to look at bad '80's furniture! It would be nice to start taking pictures again - there just isn't much to get excited about.

Plus - Robert, you don't look like you've aged at all. HMMM...What's your secret? Diet? Exercise? Photoshop?

Hi Scott - I hope you are doing well in Los Angeles!

*WOW* amazing. I got so caught up in this that I left for work late today YAY!

#14. HMM. A gas dryer is generally easier on the environment than an electric one is unless power is hydro-electric. It is generally less expensive to operate, as well. I wonder if the gas service came to this house later than the dryer did? Odd that gas service is less than one foot away and the dryer is electric.......

#16. Love that the "Sears Best" logo is taped back on.

A question for Robert (or anyone else who might be in-the-know): Concerning the 'very early' Westinghouse TL pictured near the top of this thread, is that one of the Easy-made machines, or is it a true Westinghouse?

And how can one tell an Easy-made from the first real Westinghouse TLers?

The agitator looks Easy-esque to me...

That was actually going to be a question as to what you guys were seeing these days, and sadly I guess I'm not too surprised that the good stuff is getting less and less. Westy TL - true confession

golittlesport's profile picture
Hi Frigilux

That Westy TL pictured was the first generation agitator washer made by Westinghouse. I believe the Easy-made Westy's made in the early 60's had solid tubs, but I may be wrong. I've never seen one, but in Tide ads, the control panel of the Easy-built machine had the cycle timer in the center of the control panel.

My Dad was an engineer for Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1965 my Mom was replacing her 1957 (I think) Westy slant front because (OK...true confessions time...this stays in the club) I pulled the plastic tube off the pump which made a stream of water flow out the bottom of the machine and my mom thought there was a hole in the tub. I wanted her to buy a Westy top loader. She ended up buying the flat-front tumbler Laundromat that was the exact match to the top loader pictured in Robert's estate sale visit. Same control panel.

I always wondered how long the Westy slant front would have lasted without my "help." It washed for a family of eight for eight years and only needed a boot and belt replacement. It was not a bad machine at all. My Mom loved it and was afraid she would not be happy with an agitator washer. Looking back, I can see why she thought it was the best thing since sliced bread after using a wringer washer for her large family.

I had always wanted my Mom to buy a Frigidaire washer, like the Unimatic her mom had, but with my Dad working for Westy, that was out of the question. My grandparents bought my Mom several appliances over the years, like a dishwasher and a clothes dryer, and they were always Frigidaire -- much to my Dad's chagrin.

It was a lot of fun participating in those sales by these pictures. I looked forward to the new ones every week.

Estate saleing in 2001 was a lot of fun. We don't have something like it overhere. I remember that Amana. Before this club existed I used to browse the websites of the American appliance companies. The Amana were interesting because most models had stainless steel baskets and the spinspeeds of the TOL models was 710rpm instead of 640rpm. Jeff, what's the model number of yours?

IIRC it wasn't a fur coat but a loose fur collar that I draped around like a stola. LOL. I think I still have the picture somewhere but I'm not going to post it. I have seen quite enough pictures of me with those horrible glasses with blue lenses. LOL

Thanks for the info, Rich. Now that you mention it, I think you're correct in saying the Easy-made Westy (circa 1963 or so) had a solid tub.

Fear not, your confession in the undoing of your Mom's slant-front will travel no further, LOL!

Best Thread Of 2008

I know it is still early in the year to proclaim that, but I must.

Robert, I thank you so much for showing us at least some of what your eyes have seen. It must have been a thrill going into all of those basements to look at those washers. I can just smell their dank musty odor. For me, knowing a washer was sitting down in any basement made that odor more pleasing than potpourri.

I loved all the pics especially the following.

#1-3. That BOL Kenmore was cool. Boy somebody would need good lighting to see inside it. My cousin owned a BOL 1968 model, which had the gold agitator like the one in Picture #31. The tub was the same color, but because the lighting in her laundry room was not the greatest, I could not make out the detail, so the interior almost looked void. The gold str8 vane looked like it was floating in mid air.

#16. Like everybody else, I like how the owner taped the "Sears Best" label back on to the dryer.

#31. The gold agitator with the cone-like cap was the best looking KM agitator IMHO. I loved both the str8 vane, and Roto Swirl versions. For me her beauty was from the neck up.

#42. Love how the machines look like they are posing for the camera. With the washer lid open, it looks as if it had just washed a load.

#43. That 1967 Model 70 is exactly like my childhood friend's washer. Except his was a 1968 model, with the only differences being the coloring of the dials, and the agitator was a gold Roto Swirl, with the cone shaped cap, like the one in Picture 31.

#46. Love the piano key Kenmore next to that Whirlpool dryer. I wish you had a picture of the interior. Would I be right in guessing that one of those nasty estate sale ladies chased you off before you could snap a shot?

#47. Love that '62 dryer. The console design looks similar to the 1964 turquoise set you once had. Yes, I have been snooping through the archives, so I know this. By the way, I watch that See It Wash Video all the time. At the angle, and vantage point you had your camera positioned, when I watch the video in full size on my 21 inch computer screen, I relive my memories as a 7 year old, watching the Kenmores of my neighbor who lived across the street, and my aunt who lives in Virginia.

#49. That woodgrain console on that early 80s Whirlpool is nice.

#50. Where does that Kenmore rank in the lineup? Given it's basic controls, and self cleaning lint filter, I am guessing it's a Model 70.

The picture with the "Turn Clockwise Only" warning I also like. That Whirlpool dryer with the control box matches the 24 inch washer my grandmother had. The DD Kenmore next to it is almost exactly like the one my parents had for 5 years, and left in our house when they sold it. Theirs was a 90 series, and had a fourth control knob in addition to the dial. It was a great washer, and a workhorse. I don't know if it still exists, but it earned our respect.

And yes, last but not least, I enjoyed the pictures of everybody together, and of the street you live on. What a beautiful neighborhood.

Again, thank you for posting those pictures, this thread, the videos, and this site. You have given us the best.

Have a good one,
James

Attaching paper (flammable item) to a surface that heats up however is questionable! *LOL*

How do you like it? How do you like it?
MORE MORE MORE! (Please!)

Thanks for the Trip Down Memory Lane

I have a time fill Maytag very similar to #21, but without suds saver. Was the red button on top of the control panel the Return Suds Switch? I don't see any marking on the timer dial for suds return.

These early lower end Highlanders didn't have a thermally protected motor (gasp!), so Maytag threw a motor reset switch atop the 123 and 124. There may have been a few others like this.

This thread is an amazing blast from the past!

So how was suds returned, please.

I have an old Hamilton dryer that uses a screw in glass fuse of 4.5 amps or something like that to protect the motor.

WHAT COOL THREAD ! ! !

I'd never seen this thread and really enjoyed looking at all the estate-sale-appliance-photos AND the AW member photos!   Are the group shots from the 2002 convention / wash-in?  I recognize two members from Europe, Mike & Louis.  Also how fun to see my "neighbors" Rich (Golittlesport) and Gary there too!

I'd love to have a few of those machines!    That first KM, the 900/902 Maytags, that '57? WP washer, both the TL and FL Westinghouse's and that mid-70's KM with the window in the lid.  Is that actually a factory installed window?

Thanks Eugene for dragging this one out of the archives!

Kevin

Since the 123/124 were timed filled machines, I suspect the owners manual instructed the user to advance the timer to the wash cycle and press the SAVE SUDS button and then turn on the machine.

That's right, Ben. From what I've read, you put the machine on the time you want to wash for and turn on machine. What I could never figure out was how would it know you want a full or partial load since it was time filled? Also, what if you needed more water in the tub after suds returned? I guess just turn it back to the time filling and monitor it. ??

Would love to see one of these in action!

Thanks

I thought of the same thing for the suds return minus pushing the "Save Suds" button, but was wondering if that meant that the suds valve was energized all the while it was agitating in wash because if it were not, the default hose for the pump to suck through would be the rinse drain hose.  My Aunt's Highlander from 57 or 58 was pressure fill and had a "Return Suds" section on the timer. Once the suds was returned for the last load, the toggle switch was flipped to "Drain Suds."

Kevin-- Credit for reviving this spectacular showcase thread goes to Gordon, who linked it in Jed's (lebron) "Kenmore 400 Saved From The Crusher" thread---another must-see, by the way.
